on another note, i have very strong suspicions that telepaths are not only among us but many are strategically placed to make use of their abilities. i have no proof of this, but some things are just bullshit with no other explanations. stuff you wouldn't believe.

i factor in my recognised levels of paranoia when i say shit like this.

holy shit, i just had this maniac rabbling into my ear for twenty mins.

he was going on about how he wants the media and the world to recognise the nuclear fusion technology being developed by all other countries except australia is basing their technology on schematics that he developed and was forced to distribute to other countries and how it's a "crime against humanity" that neither he nor australia has received any recongnition and the fact that australia aren't willing to grant him a few dozen million dollars to cover the costs of a black hole physicist and another specialist to help him develop this and somehow he linked in that he can prove that einstein's special relativity theory is flawed and he explained how in that at half the speed of light time would be halved and a twin who travels to the nearest star will age rapidly rather than be younger and he explained all of this in minute detail without taking a breath.

I don't think I'd support a poll test like that.
It would just too easily be coopted to disenfranchise 'undesirable' groups.
That said, I resent the hell out of voters who don't know anything about the candidates besides McCain being a 'maverick' who was a POW in 'nam and Obama being a guy who will change everything in some vague way.

Maybe some 'rational' cognitive coping techniques are like religion on a smaller scale. I find it sometimes useful to think that if I feel bad right now, there will be a future where things'll be okay. Religion just extends this to all times and places.

heh...this is pseudo-profound...or maybe not even.
 
I don't really understand why religion and mental coping techniques are relevantly similar. What are the features they share that makes you compare them?

Speaking of which, does the English language have a word or phrase that means the opposite of 'coping mechanism' -- a way of thinking which acts as a tool on you to make you assume that things will NOT be okay in the future? Somehow I get the sense Robert Anton Wilson or the Discordians would have a thoughtful answer to this question.

Perhaps something like "neurosis"...a cognitive mechanism that reduces functionality. But it would seem that you're looking for something more specific.

The closest thing I can think of would be a negative outcome bias, though it's not a single mechanism. Psychologically healthy people have a positive outcome bias, as we tend to overestimate the likelihood of good things happening to us. In other words, even though we've lived through a history of experiences where things we've deemed bad have happened to us at some average rate, we subtract from that rate as we project our lives into the future. Since cognitive errors regarding the future are essentially cognitive errors in the projection of past patterns of experience ahead, a wide range of cognitive errors associated with recognition of patterns in memory, and with the act of self-projection itself, could work together to establish a pattern of thinking that concludes things will NOT be OK in the future.

The opposite of coping is facing the facts in a way that is entirely accurate. Coping is how we alter our behavior towards stressful events as well as our interpretations of them in ways that reduce the associated stress; it's fundamentally a distorting process. If done too soon, squarely facing reality can be maladaptive. In fact, depressed people have the most "realistic" perceptions of a number of different things regarding themselves and their futures. Go delusion!
