The Dangerous Drug That Has Taken Hold of Turkey
BY EMILY FELDMAN
August 27th 2014

ISTANBUL, Turkey—The body of Volkan Senyurt was found slumped against a tree on a hill in Istanbul, one morning this summer.

The 20-year-old had been home on a break from the military when he died.

His lifelong friend and neighbor found the body. The sight was too much. A former drug user himself, the friend bolted from the scene, suspecting what authorities eventually confirmed: that bonzai, a synthetic drug that has rapidly spread through Turkey, was to blame for Senyurt's death.

Small packets of the drug, erroneously marketed on the street as a safe alternative to marijuana, began appearing in Senyurt's neighborhood of Bayramtepe several years ago, residents say.

Its arrival and sudden popularity coincided with a global rise in synthetic drug use. Like bath salts and types of synthetic marijuana popular in the U.S., bonzai spread through Turkey, unimpeded by any kind of regulation.

By the time anyone noticed, much damage had already been done.

Over the last few weeks, however, stories of bonzai-linked deaths have become news fixtures and police have finally sounded the alarm. In a national police report published in July, just a month after Senyurt's death, it was noted that bonzai, which was barely known in 2010, now account for half of all illicit drugs on the market in Istanbul, the country's largest city.

Sad, but this is what happens when you ban a drug - a more dangerous one replaces it. We've gone so far into banning RC's that the chemists have entered uncharted territory and are now distributing drugs with zero research behind them - little knowledge of the acute effects and no knowledge of the short or long term side effects.

Pretty sure some samples of this have been analyzed by independent labs here in Germany to contain a relatively concentrated group of 3 or 4 of the first and second gen synthetic cannabinoids. The problem is that the active substance/-s could/can be changed at any time. Full cannabinoid agonists at higher doses are certainly not healthy, and who knows what was even in this? :(

I have been hoping for a regulation/legalization wave to spread across Europe. So far I am not seeing or hearing of much.

I used to buy research chemicals online, but now I avoid them. Even then, MDPV and MXE proved too much for me to handle, but I do kind of miss mephedrone.

From the article: «Despite its negative effects, it remains one of the most popular drugs in the country, thanks to to its bargain price: a pack containing three grams can be had for about $1 compared to about $10 for the same amount of marijuana.»

How can it be profitable for the vendors when sold at such prices?

MXE is really the only RC I'd be interested in trying. Well, maybe 2C-B too, as I've never done it and it's one of the more famous ones. I'm mostly a fan of the classics, though. ;)

I never really thought of 2c-B as an RC, although I guess technically it qualifies. It was popular here back in 2006/7 way before the "RC scene" exploded though, so in my mind it's a plain old drug.

If you want to see what MXE feels like, get drunk while snorting lines that are 2 parts ketamine to 1 part methamphetamine. That's pretty much it. Not to say that it isn't a fun drug, I've done more than my share (a friend living down the road who takes it daily doesn't help), but it's not a mindblowing new experience, just a mashup of a few of the classics.

^I always thought of 2cb as one of the very first research chemicals as we know them today..

Not surprised this drug is popular in Turkey. Huffing gasoline is very popular in lots of rural areas, just shows people want to escape, doesn't matter how.

i have tried this "Bonzai" as i am living in istanbul, it is a cheap drug which only costs 20tl per gram(= $8us). the main reason for its widespread use and abuse is that it is everywhere and known as a poor mans heroin, most people do not enjoy the high as it is intense for your mind and body but at the same time as a long term abuser of many forms of drugs particularly heroin(my fave!!) i didnt quite mind it, but have notrushed out to get it again as the police here are rampant and are very heavy handed on this issue and being a foreigner with little turkish language under my belt it is very distressing to chase anything else but as most people here are very reluctant to help!! i have searched high and low for various highs but have only managed to find cocaine, tho this is of low quality!! very disappointing Turkey as far as being a major route for afghani brown(so they say!!??) i have not had any luck on finding anything good here except skunk!!

since when? $1?? and as for the skunk, even with turkish friends here it is pretty dear! shit arse bush yes! 10$tl per gram....hmmmm, and coming from australia where i smoked everyday to smoking maybe once a week, yer it sucks here! makes me realise how good i had it back home!!
