Yeah! The feeling of controlling a crowd is like a high all its own. What kind of tunes did you spin, house? I actually missed out on Shigeto tonight. He was playing a club in the city near my house.
The last set I played with tables was in 2011, I think? It was at a club near my house and I somehow got booked to spin first and only got a 20 minute set, which was lame. This crew of people that were attending university in my city tried really hard to get a scene going. The shows had a moderate turnout usually. 75-100 people in a venue the size of a fast food restaurant lobby.
The thing that killed me was that I had been working the scene up with my friends from the time I was 14 or 15. So I was caught in between my friends and this crew of college kids that just wanted to be 'cool dj's'. My friends who were influential on my production at the time, Amtrac & Drel, had me going in the direction of music I enjoyed that pleased me and that was more than just driving/club tracks. The crew of people that were trying to get the scene started were def more into music that garnered a crowd reaction which at the time was fidget house and really aggressive electro house.
I really hate genres. I try to make music that pulls from all my influences. Some of my first sets were performed with a MPC1000, Alesis Micron, and some old belt-driven turn table. That 20 minute set was one of my first sets to spin with CDJ's. I was asked by the event host to play stuff that was 'hard' and 'would get people pumped'. I think it bummed him out that the hardest track I played that night was a Mosca track. I was really into 2-step garage and anything dark/lush at that point in time.
Anyways, the crowd wasn't feeling my set but I was. That's what it's all about. Can't expect every college kid drunk off bottom shelf vodka to be into Burial and MJ Cole.
On a side note... What do you think of my art fellow Cuddler Puddlers? Or is it even art?
Edit : HOLY SHIT! I just logged into my super old photobucket account and found some great pictures of yesteryear. Here is some of my old equipment.
Edit : LOOK at this bag full of Washington State Amanita Caps! Lolol. If only I could go back in time and bitch smack myself.
