The contest was to redesign the entire splash page, not just the banner. It's really too bad it didn't happen.

IMHO, you cannot redesign the splash page without reskinning the forums as well. The two should be inseparable.

That was the problem I ran into.

I created a few different header graphics to start out, then I created a bunch of smaller graphics to accompany them (table headers, icons etc) but vBulletin isn't easy to redesign without a copy of the software.

Just as well. I can use the header graphics I made for my own sites now.

It's just too bland. I hate to say anything bad about BlueLight,(actually that's the ONLY bad thing I would ever say about BlueLight)but this is the most incredible,beneficial,interesting and necessary site I've ever come across. While I wouldn't "pimp" it out,it definitely could use a paint job. Maybe some fire stickers on the side to make it look like it's hauling ass.

I like the minimalistic approach, frizz, always have. The navy blue background, however, definitely gives it that "throwback to the 90's" feel. Not that there's anything wrong with it, mind you.

Would we want a bit more content on the main page than latest threads though? I'm drawing creative blanks right now, so I can't contribute anything constructive, sorry. I prefer the light b/g to the dark though (sorry, frizz ).

Good effort, but IMHO the java mouse overs are a bad idea. The whole idea of a front portal is that everything pertinent to the community is immediately visible along with the feeds. I think that the current contents of the front page should be kept as is, a table of forums and a DiTM feed.

Another thing to keep in mind, the thing that stopped others from completing this challenge, redesigning the front page would pretty much require re-skinning the entire site.

I don't think a reskin is necessary at all. It isn't unheard of for the splash page to be somewhat different from the rest of the site.

What was most daunting to me was making the news and announcement feeds work.
