The Bikie Wars

Former bikie boss and associate in court

June 09, 2009 12:30pm

A FORMER bikie boss and an associate wounded in a shoot-out on a Jandakot property have appeared in Fremantle Magistrates Court today.
Former Gypsy Joker national president Lennard Kirby and an associate, Alexandro Scilio, were shot during a confrontation at the Peppworth Place property on May 18.

Both men were charged with being involved in an act causing danger.

Mr Kirby, who was shot three times in what police alleged was a dispute over drugs, was remanded in custody until next week when a bail application will be considered.

Mr Scilio was granted bail and is due to reappear in court next month.

Seven people have been charged in connection with the shooting, which left four with gunshot wounds.

Police have recovered one weapon which they believe was used in the shooting and are searching for a second gun.

Which is why the ACC is such a concern to heavy crooks.

Indemnity from prosecution on anything discussed during a confidential examination is a powerful leverage tool.

In the first property, officers located and seized a quantity of cannabis and amphetamine. A 37-year-old man, an alleged member of the Rebels OMCG, was arrested at the scene and taken to Lithgow Police Station.

He was charged with two counts of possess prohibited drug and was granted bail to appear at Lithgow Local Court on 30 July, 2009.

At the second Lithgow premises, officers located and seized a quantity of cannabis, along with a sword. A 46-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man were arrested at the scene and taken to Lithgow Police Station.

on SBS now on Dateline there is a doco about the Hells angels problem in Canada and the lessons learnt from that to help police with the problems here ...

This week on Dateline, we look at how authorities in Canada are confronting underground bikie gangs - and scoring some big hits against the Hells Angels.

Reporter Nick Lazaredes travels from coast to coast and finds a country crippled by motorcycle gang violence, and an epidemic of illicit drug use fuelled by the Hells Angels trafficking networks.

Nick meets Julian Sher, a journalist who has spent decades investigating organised crime. Yet for all his experience, one question surrounding the Hells Angels remains unanswered. "Why is it that the most open, known, brazen criminal gangs can't be put away?" he asks.

For Sher, the problem is the authorities long-term failure to consider the Hells Angels a serious threat.

But for Montreal-based crime reporter Michel Auger, the story is more complicated than that. "The Hells Angels have virtually killed all their opponents over the years, those who survived joined them," he says. Although Auger himself is an exception, having been shot in the back six times by a Hells Angels member.

As Australia deals with its own bikie problem, what lessons can be learned from Canada's experience?

Find out more this week on Dateline, Sunday 8:30pm on SBS ONE.

Gangs Squad charge Comanchero & launch ‘Dob-in-a-bikie’ to target Outlaw Motor Cycle Gangs
Tuesday, 23 Jun 2009 05:40am

In light of the charging of a Comanchero member who will face court today, Gangs Squad detectives have launched the ‘dob-in-a-bikie’ initiative aimed at raising public awareness and reporting of illegal Outlaw Motor Cycle Gang activity.

Gangs Squad detectives under Strike Force Eastbourne, with assistance from West Australia Police, arrested a 26-year-old Hurstville man – an alleged member of the Comanchero OMCG – in Western Australia on Friday.

He will face Perth Central Law Court today after being charged in relation to an arrest warrant for alleged aggravated robbery, take and detain person in company with intent to obtain advantage, and participate in a criminal group. An application will be made for his extradition to Sydney.

In light of this recent arrest, members of the public and victims are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers and report incidents of Outlaw Motor Cycle Gang crime.

The New South Wales Police Force has joined numerous other states across Australia in this joint effort to tackle OMCG crime.

Gangs Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Mal Lanyon, said, “The NSW Police Force is committed to targeting illegal activity by Outlaw Motor Cycle Gang members and their associated criminal enterprises.

“Police continue to work in partnership with the community and I encourage the public to ‘dob-in-a-bikie’ by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

“I reassure the public that this initiative is not aimed at targeting motorcycle enthusiasts, it is aimed at the illegal activities of Outlaw Motor Cycle Gang members and their associates.

“If you are involved in any level of illegal OMCG activity be warned – police and the public are watching.

“There is often a ‘code of silence’ associated with OMCG crime as victims may fear reporting matters to police. As such we are aware of a number of extortion incidents which we are hopeful of investigating with the community’s assistance.

“I want to reassure the public and victims of crime that they can feel safe and assured that all reports are dealt with in strict confidence.

“I encourage anyone with information about OMCG crime to contact Crime Stoppers immediately,” Detective Superintendent Lanyon said.

The NSW Police Force has numerous strategies in place to target OMCG crime including Operation Ranmore and Strike Force Raptor.

A total of 1115 OMCG arrests have been made under Operation Ranmore since May 2007, with 2508 charges laid against OMCG members and their associates.

Meanwhile, Strike Force Raptor police have to date made a total of 203 arrests and laid 410 charges.

Members of the public are urged that if they become witness to any of the following, they should contact Crime Stoppers immediately:

What to look out for:
· Any acts of violence or overt crime involving OMCG members or associates which may include drive-by shootings or extortions – often targeting the building industry;
· If you see an OMCG member wearing gang colours who is involved in an act of crime or violence
· If you see any suspicious behaviour in and around OMCG club houses in your area
· If you are a witness to, or if you become aware of, any illegal activity involving OMCGs

Anyone who is witness to any of the above activities is urged to contact Crime Stoppers immediately on 1800 333 000.

Police deny bikie hotline an admission of failure

Nicole Cox, police reporter

June 23, 2009 11:00am

POLICE have rejected claims that today's dob-in-a-bikie campaign is an admission they have hit a dead-end in their assault on WA's outlaw motorcycle gangs.
In announcing the 16-hour bikie information phone-in, Assistant Commissioner for specialist crime Wayne Gregson said the campaign was simply an opportunity for the public to provide police with key intelligence and snippets of information that may help counter gang crime.

Police have received more than 80 calls with information about illegal bikie activities as a result of today's phone-in.

Since the dob-in-a-bikie campaign launch two weeks ago, police received 55 calls, 48 of which have been diverted to the organised crime squad for further investigation. So far today, 28 calls have been received.

Until 10pm tonight, the Crime Stoppers number - 1800 333 000 - has become a special bikie information hotline.

``This is a golden opportunity for the police service to supplement our intelligence holdings and it will enable us to move forward in a whole range of ways at countering the scourge of bikie activity in our community,'' Mr Gregson said.

``This does not send a signal that we are at a dead-end. It's just merely supplementing our information holdings and it's a very useful tool.

``Bikie gangs, particularly in Australia and particularly in Western Australia, are organised criminal networks.

``People are labouring under the misapprehension that they are middle-aged men with a fetish for nice motorcycles. Let me assure you and let me assure the community that these are organised criminal networks responsible for considerable criminal activity in our community.''

``They are elaborate, they are sophisticated and they spare no expense in progressing their criminal endeavours.''

There are seven known bikie clubs in WA with about 260 patched members.

Mr Gregson said their sole reason for being was profiteering from criminal activity and history has shown that bikies attempted to gain footholds in the hospitality, hotel, transport and security industries.

He said bikies were involved in serious crime, including illicit drug production, drug trafficking, extortion, money laundering, gun-running and violence.

Since January 2008, WA Police's anti-bikie investigation, code-named Operation Jupiter, has charged 341 bikies, nominees or associates, seized $10 million in assets and uncovered 80 firearms.

Drugs, including 8.5kg of amphetamines, more than 1000 ecstasy tablets and almost 60kg of cannabis, has also be confiscated as part of the offensive.

Anyone wanting to report criminal bikie-related activity can call CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.

Mr Gregson reiterated that only the text of the call was passed on to Operation Jupiter investigators and caller details remained confidential with CrimeStoppers.

Exclusive pictures: Inside WA's newest bikie headquarters

23rd June 2009, 6:00 WST

getfile.aspx

These are the first images from inside the Balga headquarters of WA’s newest bikie gang, the Finks.

Video footage taken during a raid on the property shows a clubhouse still under construction but bearing all the hallmarks of a bikie haven in the making.

The Olney Court property, which was bought by the wife of former Coffin Cheater-turned-Fink Troy Mercanti last year, features an elaborate bar area and a patio under construction, room for the bikies’ beloved Harley Davidson motorcycles and a wardrobe full of leather jackets bearing the Finks distinct insignia.

Last month’s raid came as part of Operation Jupiter, the latest crackdown by WA police on bikie gangs. Nobody was charged after the Balga raid, but Operation Jupiter has led police to charge 341 bikies with 1055 offences since it started in late 2007.

A police spokesman said the intelligence gathered during the Balga raid was invaluable. He said of particular interest was distinct colouring on the Finks insignia that detectives believe confirms the gang’s permanent presence in WA.

Mercanti, who is currently serving time in jail over a Northbridge nightclub bashing that left a reveller with a badly broken jaw, was regarded as critical to the gang’s efforts to establish a WA presence after he was booted out of the Coffin Cheaters early last year.

Police released footage from the raid as they launched an appeal for the public to ‘dob in a bikie’ by calling CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information about outlaw gang activity in WA.

The footage, which can be seen exclusively on thewest.com.au, also shows raids on clubhouses for rival gangs the Outlaws and the Coffin Cheaters.

The December raid at the Coffin Cheaters Bayswater headquarters led police to seize a cache of guns hidden inside a secret cavity inside a wall of the compound. Tens of thousands of dollars cash was also seized.

Comanchero boss Mick Hawi re-arrested, expected to be charged

Tuesday, 30 June 2009 12:51 PM

Comanchero bikie boss Mick Hawi has been re-arrested by police investigating the fatal brawl at Sydney airport earlier this year.

Hawi is being questioned at Kogarah police station.

Gangs Squad detectives arrested the leader at Connemarra Street at Bexley at 11.30am today.

They say charges are expected to be laid.

Hawi, 28, and five other men had already been charged with affray over the March 26 brawl which involved Hells Angels and Comancheros.

Anthony Zervas, 29, died as a result of the fight.

The Commancero head had been granted bail by the NSW Supreme Court to assist his pregnant wife.

His lawyer, John Korn, rejected suggestions his client was a flight risk.

Justice Latham was told Hawi's wife Carolina Gonzales was 31 weeks into an "at risk pregnancy" and could go into labour at any time.

On Friday, she found Ms Gonzales did need her husband at home to help her through the pregnancy and birth.

"The material before me establishes the applicant's wife is likely to give birth prematurely," the judge said.

"I also accept the applicant's wife is in need of her husband's support for the purposes of the birth."

Before Hawi surrendered to police in April, it was rumoured that Hells Angels had placed a $100,000 bounty on his head over the brutal slaying.

Airport death: Comanchero chief charged

comanchero-420x0.jpg

June 30, 2009 - 1:36PM

Comanchero boss Mahmoud "Mick" Hawi has been charged with murder over the death of Anthony Zervas during a brawl at Sydney Airport in March.

In a dramatic twist in the investigation into the brawl, officers attached to Strike Force Metter, formed to investigate the bashing death of Zervas, arrested Hawi at his Bexley home just before midday.

Zervas was the brother of Hells Angel Peter, and died during a brawl at the airport between the Angels and the Comanchero.

Hawi, 29, was questioned and charged at Kogarah Police Station .

He was refused bail to appear in Kogarah Local Court this afternoon.

Hawi, along with five other members of the Comanchero have been charged with affray and riot over the March 22 brawl. He was recently granted bail in the Supreme Court, subject to strict conditions.

It is understood that police spoke to Hawi during his arrest at Bexley and told him that he would be charged with murder.

Frederika Bromwich, the mother of Anthony and Peter, was informed of the arrest by smh.com.au.

"Are you for real?'' she asked.

"Thank God for that. Finally,'' she said before breaking down and weeping.

Ms Bromwich made an impassioned plea several weeks ago for police to charge somebody over the murder of her son and blamed the outlaw motorcycle clubs for his death.

Police would also allege that Hawi is a member of the Comanchero Outlaw Motor Cycle Gang.

Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said more people would be charged over the airport incident but he would not be drawn on the nature of the charges.

He also would not comment what evidence police had that allowed them to lay charges against Hawi today.

Murder-charged bikie cops spray from victim's mum

Tuesday, 30 June 2009 6:56 PM

Three months after a fatal brawl at Sydney Airport that horrified scores of innocent bystanders, police have charged a bikie gang leader with murder.

Comanchero chief Mahmoud "Mick" Hawi, 29, was on Tuesday charged in Kogarah Local Court with the murder of Anthony Zervas after being arrested at his Bexley home in Sydney's south the same morning.

Mr Zervas, 29, the brother of senior Hells Angels member Peter Zervas, was left in a pool of blood after the March 22 brawl which involved several men and rolled through two levels of the airport.

He is believed to have suffered severe head injuries during the brawl as a result of being bludgeoned with a steel bollard. It is also alleged he suffered stab wounds.

Hawi and five of his gang had already been charged with affray over the airport incident.

NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions had advised Hawi, who was free on bail, should be charged with murder.

He said the brief of evidence against the bikie boss "is strong".

"I can say that the police investigation into this has been meticulous. It needed to be," Mr Scipione told reporters on Tuesday.

Hawi's appearance at Kogarah Local Court did not include a bail application and he will be held in custody until July 9 when he is due to face Sydney's Central Local Court.

Outside court, Anthony Zervas' mother hurled abuse, and spittle, at Hawi's supporters.

"Even my spit is worth more than Mick Hawi," Frederika Bromwich cried from the courthouse steps.

Later she said, presumably to Hawi: "May you rot in hell and give you the same pain - as you gave me - to your mother and your sister."

Mr Scipione said the police case against Hawi will be based on a combination of forensic evidence and hundreds of witness statements.

"We said that we would clear up this murder incident at the airport. This is but the first instalment."

He said more people would be charged over the incident, but declined to say what charges they would face.

Mr Scipione added that since the brawl there had been a "significant review" of security measures at the airport.

"We will continue to contribute to the upgrading of security at the airport," he said.

Australian Federal Police (AFP) boss Mick Keelty welcomed Tuesday's charge, while defending the work of his officers, who are principally responsible for security at the airport.

AFP officers did not arrive at the scene of the brawl until about 15 minutes after Anthony Zervas was bashed.

Asked about the AFP's role in the incident, Mr Keelty reiterated that Sydney airport's faulty cameras were to blame for the officers' slow response.

"We have to work with all the agencies at the airport, including the private sector, and of course we're always looking to improve security where it's possible," he told reporters at Parliament House in Canberra.

Hells Angels member arrested over fatal fight at Sydney Airport — Gangs Squad
Wednesday, 01 Jul 2009 04:13pm

An alleged member of an Outlaw Motor Cycle Gang has been arrested following ongoing investigations by Gangs Squad detectives into a fatal fight at Sydney Airport earlier this year.

Gangs Squad detectives attended a unit at Punchbowl about 2.45pm today, where they arrested a 32-year-old man.

Police will allege the man is a member of the Hells Angels Outlaw Motor Cycle Gang.

The man was taken to Burwood Police Station where he is currently assisting with inquiries. Charges are expected to be laid.

The arrest follows yesterday’s charging of a 29-year-old man at Bexley as a result of ongoing investigations by Gangs Squad detectives into an alleged fight at Sydney Airport on Sunday 22 March.

Anthony Zervas was treated at the scene after allegedly being assaulted, however, later died at the Prince of Wales Hospital.

Strike Force Metter was established to investigate the incident and comprises detectives from the State Crime Command’s Gangs Squad and Homicide Squad, along with officers from the Central Metropolitan Region.
