☛ Official ☚ The Big & Dandy Scale / Balance Thread - Part 2.000±

Having said that, some day I plan on investing hundreds on a submilligram scale.

I recommend it. It's fantastic to be able to have 100% confidence in any measurement you make to a decimal place further than you need.

If you are wise you can set up a watch on ebay to catch some awesome scales - I have a 0.1mg and a 0.01mg balance both of which were less than £200 shipped.

Hey everyone! So I read a lot on this subreddit about the popularity of the Gemini-20 scale so I decided to buy one and run it through a full calibration. My goal in this is to give the community an unbiased scientific evaluation of this scale.
The results are the following:
Scale readout @20 g: 20.004 g
Scale readout @10 g: 10.000 g
Scale readout @5 g: 5.004 g
Scale readout @2 g: 2.001 g
Scale readout @1 g: 1.001 g
Scale readout @500 mg: .501 g
Scale readout @200 mg: .201 g
Scale readout @100 mg: .101 g
Scale readout @50 mg: .051 g
Scale readout @10 mg: .014 g
Scale readout @1.010 g: 1.011 g
Conclusion: This scale meets its stated accuracy of .005 g and has a pretty non-linear error. As you can see by the last reading, adding 10g to the 10 mg weight resulted in a truer number.
All readings were taken after allowing the scale to warm up and acclimate to a 68 Degree F lab. The scale was then exercised and I went through the cal procedure the scale instructions say with the included weights. Both of my included weights came out to 10.00005 grams when measured. The calibration weights I used are +/-.00005 g and are NIST traceable meeting all A2LA requirements.

After having my jennings JS-VG 20 for a few days now, all i want to do is take my two aws 20's out back and go office space on those bitches. At the price range, theres no comparison to the JS-VG 20 imho. IDK if its 2mg, at least it doesnt drift 10's of mgs like my aws's do.

But $20 ea, i wasnt surprized at how innaccurate they are. One thing i will say, is they lasted a good while. Never had one take a complete shit on me, just fuck with my head innaccurately dosing out certain psychs a few times.

I am lucky enough to own a few sets, ranging from a Mettler 0.01mg balance as well as the cheapest possible set I could find on ebay. The cheap set is actually surprisingly accurate, usually within about 2mg of my more expensive balances. Given that my £60 ones are within about 1mg, I'd be more than comfortable dosing MXE with these. the question is, are all of the cheap Chinese sets similarly accurate?

Edit: 6 months after buying, my gemini-20 style ones now display a "FULL" error.

Anybody out there know Mettler balances well? I have a Mettler UM3 that powers on but I can not get it to zero. I have the documentation and what I end up with in the display is an underweight indicator (all dashes low). Perhaps a problem with the pan break? internal tare weights?
I would love to get this machine working. Readability is .1 micrograms. or .0000001g. so accurate measurement of microgram amounts would be possible.

(I also have a working Mettler AC100 (.0001) , a broken Mettler AC100 and an Adam (.001))

I presume you've checked to ensure there aren't any locking switches to hold the pan in place for transportation? Have you tried contacting them? Though I'm sure it's an old model they are usually incredibly willing to help you out if you give them a call.

When I was hacking away at the ac100 I contacted them and they didn't help me. They said they disposed of the documentation for the old models.
yeah... .0000001g =D (only up to 15mg but you can tare up to a larger amount.) I was pumped with .0001 with the ac100 but this UM3 takes the cake (when working LOL)

There is a locking switch - it was not locked though. I followed the procedures in the manual. There is probably something wrong with the pan brake or something like that. There is a company that works on them still and i will probably call them.

I would almost being willing to weigh stuff for people in the name of harm reduction - but - i'm pretty sure the demand would be high and I wouldn't have the time.

This would also rely on you giving up your address, handling controlled substances and strangers trusting you with their expensive compounds!

Yeah - I know its probably not feasible. It would be ideal though...
We all know what eyeballing and bad scales have done. :X

People will be reckless... if they want to know the weight they would have gotten a proper scale. You can inform them but there's not much else you can do tbh. If they are stupid they will be reckless with their drug use until it bites them in the ass anyway

I think some people would spend time to confirm weight... Not everyone but some. One life saved could make all the difference...

Perhaps calibration weight calibration would be a safer and arguably more useful service

So if I cal somebody's cal weight to .1mg and they use it on there 20$ ~~~"mg" scale that's off by ~+-3mg and they weigh DOC on it - what have we gained?
Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying I would confirm powder weights for people - I think it could be done in a discrete fashion and it is feasible BUT I don't have the time to set that up!
People should be responsible and if you're weighing coke, weed, hash, mdxx - etc 100+mg actives you can be off +-3mg and that's fine. Otherwise its a crap shoot. And you shouldn't use or deal mg or sub-mg actives if you can't weigh within a fraction of an mg for mg or for sub-mg a fraction of a ug. (LOL - that sentence may not read well but it makes sense.) If you can't weigh it properly - do not use and especially don't hand to other people!

No, I agree, but it is nice just to be able to know that when you're weighing out 25mg of 2C-B you're not getting 30mg.

Its looking like it will be very hard to repair the .0000001g balance. I need some super thin square titanium wire and possibly there is a part missing.

After a lot of reading and watching the video Transform posted about strain gauge vs em force restoration. I think I want to go with em force restoration.

Does anyone have any experience with the A&D FX-120i?
A description can be found here http://balance.balances.com/scales/1223

(there price is a little higher and I have found it for 450 with shipping.. it is a little much but I like the certainty associated with a better build scale. And knowing it will last is nice too .. I know I could buy 10 cheapo scales for the price but that just doesnt appeal to me)

Most of the big brands will be great quality, your best bet will be to check out some reviews but really it comes down to price. You can get them for way cheaper second hand if you're willing to wait.

Does anyone have any experience with this scale? I have been using an Acculab VIC-123 for the last 4 years but it will no longer turn on. I suspect it is a problem with the AC outlet port or charger. They offered me a new adapter for $50 but there is a restocking fee as well and I just don't want to deal with the hassle of sending it there and back if that doesn't do it.

I'm also looking at the My Weigh GemPro 250.
