Cheap self-help for MXE overuse
The easiest way I can think of to control one's rate of use of a problem drug they're not physically addicted to is to simply rent the smallest/cheapest bank safe-deposit box you can find reasonably far away and keep it stored off site. A cheap one is around $35 per year. If you're a frequent user, think about how much money in MXE it would save you if you had to leave your place and go to a bank that's typically closed weekends to get MXE.
The typical cycle that leads to unplanned dosing is as many people have noted: "Why not use MXE now? ... Fine, I'll do it tonight, but try harder to skip it tomorrow." Then tomorrow comes and circumstances haven't meaningfully changed so ... . Safe deposit box storage still allows you to decide to do it "tonight," but assuming you only take one night's pre-measured supply (concealed in a common container that looks like it belongs there), it literally forces you to try harder "tomorrow" -- or simply denies you access during the hours/days the bank is closed. It changes the circumstances in a way most frequent users find it very difficult to do using sheer will power by making the most frequently-cited method of taking a break, "running out," a far more frequent occurrence. This sort of forced moderation of course also has the benefit of radically improving the experience.
