The Big and Dandy Scale Thread (First wave - archived 10-31-07)

I just received the VIC-123 and it works great. You have to adjust its sensitivity setting to fit your environment, or you get real wobbly readings (you can adjust it to 4 different room stability settings and can even choose the decimal place stability).

I got the VIC 123 to replace the Jprecission and in side to side comparisons of both, the VIC-123 is WAY WAY better (better average accuracy and better repeatability).

The VIC 123 and the new .002 Tanita (forget the model) are close to the same price, and I can say experientially that the VIC-123 is worth the money.

^ Tanita's new 2mg scale is model 1230. Thanks for the review of the VIC, sounds like a good buy.

Ok so, I'm considering purchasing an American Weigh miniPro-30 (30g x 0.001g)
http://www.americanweigh.com/product_info.php?cPath=99&products_id=441

Unless somebody can tell me either:

1. why not to buy this scale
2. a more accurate scale for a better price

I need a scale very soon, I need to order one within a few days.

edit: changed '10g' to '30g' as that is the actual capacity of the scale

On a, I think it is Blackscales.com, you can get a Gempro 20g*.002 mg scale for 168$. Gempro is better than american weigh. If you want a real good one go for Tanita of Acculab in the 250$ range.

I really don't want a 0.002g scale - I have a friend with one and know that even if the scale isn't very accurate (his sucks), a 0.001g scale is still twice as accurate as a 0.002g one. Even if the scale was 0.001g with a variance of +/- 1-3 mg, I'd still be somewhat happy because I can reweigh it repeatedly to come out with an average.

The minipro looks good. I've been satisfied with other american weigh scales in the past, granted they had lower resolutions.

Oh, and, I saw a gempro 10g x 0.002g for $135 on a site I was considering purchasing from.

the russians have made some great things... got myself a soviet-made e=0.5mg laboratory scale for about $70 :)
it's absolutely foolproof and will probably never break down (well, almost)

Thats absolutely amazing if it is truly that precise!! Where can one find such relics of the cold war?

don't do the gempro, the tanita 1230 is only $65-105 more and much better

i mean seriously, keep in mind that if you misweigh something and end up in the hospital or whatever, it'll cost you a whole lot more than that

Do you mean 0.5g or 0.5mg? I cannot imagine getting a submilligram scale for under $500.00 that's worth a crap. I got a Mettler .0001g, or 0.1mg balance off of LabX for just over $300.00 (and spent another good chunk having it retuned). That scale is fool proof.

The Acculab VIC-123 is still a good value for a milligram scale for $250 new; although, it is NOT very portable.

So did u return it because it was not a good scale? I got the impression that you considered the Mettler a great scale, but if that is the case y did u return it?

0,5mg, i live in the area of the former soviet union and happened to find someone who had a bunch of these for sale. i have tested it and yes, it IS that precise

That's a great price!

I have heard good things about Russian mechanical things. You should have purchased the lot and resold them.

Looks like American Weigh has a pretty good dead-on-arrival policy and I'll be getting another one...

When you get one that works, please post it's accuracy and repeatability, please.
