acculab vic-123 or tanita 1230 ??

Hi All

OK im gunna get either of these but as they both appear fairly new to the market i couldnt find much on bluelight about them :( I'm assuming the tanita 1230 is the new line of the 1210's etc so should probably be just as good. the acculabs look good too but i havent heard iof anyone using them...any opinions?

Thanks
b

Yep the 1230 is the new model to replace the old 1210-100 and 1210-50. So no Tanita has not thumbed it's nose at us... quite the oppiste its come out with a new and improved model that is the same price :)

Hey Cat Again have you personally used a Jennings precision JS10 or the re-badged American Weigh scale? If so I'd love to hear of you experiences using it and what difficulties you found ect... esp because I am seriously considering purchasing this model scale in the future. I understand that this in not the most accurate scale. One website that sells them addmitted that they consistently saw inaccuracies of +/- 2mg when they used it. So yes I understand that this is probably a fickle scale... (ie touchy and need much care using it) but all that considered if the scale works okay then if really shouldn't be that much more inacurate than a Tanita seeing as a Tanita can only weigh in increments of +/- 2mg. Would love to hear of others experiences with this scale though...

hunt around for 2nd hand .001 scales b4 buying tanita

Hi

I was just about to buy a pair of tanita 1210's or 1230's when i made some calls to local scale companies to see what they had to offer. i ended up speaking with a guy about if his company sold second hand which they didnt but as hes in the industry he knew of some 2nd hand mettler pm scales for sale. They are in great condition, weigh down to .001 not just .002 like the tanitas and are proper lab balances and are spot on when weighing a 10,20,50mg refernce weights.
I got these for less than the tanitas and i think they are far superior.
guess the point of my post is to suggest doing some calling around locally to see what u might come across ;)

I found these brand new 0.001g scales for the amazing price of ~$45 (including calibration weights).

http://ukscales.com/shop/index.php?cPath=62_73

Has anyone tried them? What do people think? I realize that cheap will inevitably not be as good, but if all it means is that I have to re-calibrate after each weighing I can live with that. If it means I have to add a credit card card or something similar (and subtract the difference) as higher masses weigh more accurately then small ones I can also live with that. Even if it means the reading jumps about so the true accuracy is only about 2mg I'm also prepared to live with that. If however they're likely to be utter rubbish that can't weigh anything then obviousy I don't want to bother. I'd appreciate any advice from the more experienced people around here.

If they are decent quality then it gets rid of the argument once and for all that price is a reason to not own a set of good accurate scales.

^i head those scales suck.
iv also seen one break a couple days after my friend bought it.

I did come across a new balance though that is under $200. Its made by American Weigh and is called the mini pro. If you google it it will come up. Its also all over ebay.
Does anyone know anything about it. Im considering buying one.

I feel that at $45 you can't really go wrong there. Just check if it comes with a warranty and where you'd pave to post teh faulty one to and at whose expense... I mean, even if it won't give the high fidelity of an acculab or something, if you triple-weigh your doses prior to your research, you should be fine. I use an Acculab PP2060D and paid over $300 for it. Needless to say, I am happy with it. And still I triple-check all my research doses . . . just to be sure, as fluctuations in room temperature and air currents as well as doses not put on the scale all at once tend to give inaccurate results... hence, why not go with the cheapo?

Can some one give me a link to a source that sells mg Tanita scales. I can't seem to find mg Tanita models at any scale websites.

Or in general a reliable mg scale under 300$ for that matter.

Anyone know how Acculab is?

Acculab V1-MG - Strain Guage Technology?

Does anyone have experience with this scale as nobody does with the newer version the VIC-123, but the V1-MG has been around longer and is a older but very similar scale using strain guage technology. Does anyone have any information on these scales, are they good for wieghing out say 8-10mg without drifting more than a milligram? BTW they are a .001g scale so they should work in theory but its a much cheaper scale than others that have a better wieghing technology, it only costs 260 USD after shipping.

I've checked that scale thread and I can't find my answer and I even posted with no real replys, i've even tried other forums but nobody can tell me about this strain gauge technology and whether it drifts too much for 8-10mg application to within -/+ 1mg. Most mg scales are accurate to -/+ 1mg but this is a cheaper model that the company says drifts a little and is best for less than super critical applications but maybe that means it might be off by an additional few 100ugs or maybe even another 1mg which would be fine if its a good scale and nobody seems to know anything other than acculab is a good brand and even then there are conflicts to that!

Also what would be a good calibration wieght to use, Sartorius 10mg Class 2 calibration weightI was looking at and its pretty cheap and I assume class 2 could'nt be too far off from 10mg, i'd say it might be off by a couple 100ugs or something cause its less cost. Or should I go with a 1mg wieght but logice says no 10mg would be better for this scale.

Should I get a 10mg calibration wieght for a .001g scale or should I get maybe a 20mg, what do you guys think would work the best to keep my scale as accurate as possible when wieghing 8-10+mg.

Also is a class 2 calibration wieght fine for mg applications.

Strain guages use changes in resistance which isn't too good if you use it in places where the temp varies a lot or if you don't have a stabilized, regulated power supply (as the current will change & give varing results as well as the the influence of the self heating caused by passing current through a resistance).

I'd say the best ones are most probably those that use variations in capacitance between two plates separated by an elastic material, but I don't know how may scales use which methods

Forgive me if I'm reinventing the wheel but:

If one owns a cheap scale that claims precision to .001 g, then it's a given that the thing gets all flakey when trying to weigh amounts < 10 mg or so.

So wouldn't it be possible on such a scale to confidently arrive at 3 mg by weighing out 100 mg of a substance and then taking enough away so the display reads 97 mg?

Better yet maybe one could experiment by putting three 1 mg weights on the scale, add 97 mg of substance, and then see what the display reads when the weights are taken away. Repeat this procedure at several different weights, e.g. :

47 mg + 3 weights
97 mg + 3 weights

etc., etc. up to

(maximum scale capacity - 3 mg) + 3 weights

I'm wondering if different cheap scales (or even mid - higher priced ones) have their individual "sweet spots" where they work best.

Or maybe I'm just high....

^That actually seems to be a very good idea since the heavier the item you are weighing, the more accurate the scale is likely to be. So if you had 100mg of substance, you could subtract the weight of what you wanted by taking substance away.

About the Acculab-123 and Strain Gauge Technology, what other mechanisms are there for scales that would be implemented in cheaper models that would provide better performance? The Tanita-1210 uses Strain Gauge doesnt it? So I would assume the Acculan-123 is a fairly good scale for it's price, correct?
