Queensland police seize synthetic cannabis

Police have seized a large quantity of synthetic cannabis at a home in Brisbane's outer suburbs.

Tactical crime squad officers searched the Jindalee house about at 6pm (AEST) on Tuesday.

Most-wanted man back behind bars for drug crime

One of Australia's most-wanted criminals who forged a successful career as a prestige car salesman while on the run from authorities has now been jailed for his part in a drug trafficking ring.

Daniel Rocco Faiello, 30, absconded while on home detention bail in Adelaide in November 2009, after he and his mother were threatened.

The Adelaide District Court heard he fled to Melbourne and worked as a prestige car salesman while he was on the list of the 12 most-wanted criminals in Australia.

After extensive publicity, Faiello was arrested in April ending two years and five months on the run, and returned to custody in Adelaide.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of trafficking in a commercial quantity of a controlled drug.

The court heard more than one kilogram of cocaine and methylamphetime was found hidden in shampoo bottles in the luggage of a courier at Adelaide Airport in December 2007, after a flight from New South Wales.

It was told a similar operation was successfully completed nine days prior to the drugs being intercepted by authorities, who had the alleged offenders under surveillance.

Drug debts

The offending was driven by your own addiction to drugs. While this is not an excuse, it provides some explanation to why you allowed yourself to become so entrenched in such behaviour

Judge Anne Bampton
Judge Anne Bampton said Faiello was a drug addict at the time of the offending and had substantial drug debts.

Judge Bampton said the man absconded because he could not meet the demands of those who threatened him while on home detention bail.

She told the hearing he now regretted his criminal behaviour.

"The offending was driven by your own addiction to drugs. While this is not an excuse, it provides some explanation to why you allowed yourself to become so entrenched in such behaviour," she said.

Judge Bampton said Faiello had shown deep remorse for his offending and a "desire to make a better life for yourself and your family".

A sentence of six years was set, with a non-parole period of three years, allowing credit for time Faiello had already served in custody.

Police arrest trio, still seeking violent robbers

A police taskforce set up to investigate armed hold-ups and other crimes along the mid north coast has had a break through.

Yesterday officers from Strike Force Mehi arrested three men in Nambucca Heads.

The men aged 29, 28 and 18 face charges including break and enter, supply of ammunition, and drug offences.

Crime manager Detective Inspector Cameron Lindsay says the investigation into a series of violent crimes continues.

"The Strike Force Mehi was set up to investigate those robberies including the relatively serious one at the Club Urunga on the 17th of June.

"During that incident one man was assaulted, he required hospital treatment for the injuries.

"Investigations are still continuing in relation to that and we would like to hear from anyone that may be able to assist," he said.

Detective Inspector Lindsay says he doesn't think the trio have links to outlaw motorcycle gangs or drug trafficking on the Pacific Highway.

He says they're hoping to lay more charges after examining items seized today.

"Police executed a search warrant at a Pine Creek address in Bonville.

"Police will allege that they found drugs and property that are subject to ongoing investigation," he said.

"There was a number of items that were recovered from the search warrant today subject to further inquiries.

"I would anticipate there will be further charges," he said.

Taiwan makes biggest heroin bust in 10 years

TAIPEI: Taiwan seized 80 kilograms of heroin in its biggest bust of the drug in the past 10 years, arresting seven people involved in smuggling it from Cambodia, officials said on Wednesday.

Agents uncovered the drugs early Monday after they boarded the Hung Chi Yu No 7, a fishing boat, in the Bashi Channel between Taiwan and the Philippines, according to a spokesman from the Bureau of Investigation.

"With the help of US-based high-tech satellite technology, we had been able to monitor the vessel from the moment it left Cambodia," the spokesman said.

He said it was the largest heroin smuggling case uncovered by the bureau since 2002 when it confiscated 120 kilograms.

Agents arrested two people on the fishing boat, and later detained five others suspected of involvement, including a low-ranking politician from a township in southern Taiwan.

The spokesman declined to specify the street value of the heroin, believed to be intended for local Taiwanese use, but media on the island put the estimated price at NT$2.4 billion (US$80 million).

Under Taiwan's stern anti-drug laws, the suspects could be sentenced to death if convicted.

26 drug inmates face transfer from South

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT : The Corrections Department will transfer 26 major drug inmates from prisons in the South to high-security facilities in other areas.

The department has obtained credible information that at least 200 inmates in southern prisons were running drug deals behind bars, department director-general Suchart Wong-anantchai said after a meeting with southern prison chiefs and local police.

Of those inmates, 26 are major drug-dealing inmates, Pol Col Suchart said.

Pol Col Suchart said he has assigned his deputy, Kobkiart Kasiwiwat, to tackle the drug problem in the southern prisons by transferring the major drug inmates to high-security facilities elsewhere.

However, the 26 inmates would not be housed together. They would be jailed in different high-security prisons to prevent them from teaming up to run drug deals behind bars, Pol Col Suchart said.

He has also instructed Mr Kobkiart to rotate prison warders in the South.

Pol Col Suchart said he believed some smuggled mobile phones were still hidden in the Nakhon Si Thammarat Central Prison, although recent checks did not find any. The phones were used by some inmates to conduct drug deals.

There are currently only 160 prison officials employed at Nakhon Si Thammarat Central Prison, which has more than 5,000 inmates.

Pol Col Suchart has ordered the installation of security equipment in the prison, including mobile phone signal-jammers.

He said sacked Nakhon Si Thammarat Prison warder Natthapol Raya, who was arrested this week for alleged involvement in the drug trade, still had some network members in the prison. However, those network members had temporarily halted their drug deals.

Mr Natthapol, 37, his wife Pornrujee Raya, who is a nurse at the prison's nursery centre, and Sakaoduen Thipkaew, 25, who was allegedly hired by the couple to open bank accounts to receive money from the sale of illicit drugs, were detained on Thursday for their alleged drug trade involvement.

The department chief said drug networks had employed sophisticated methods to smuggle illicit drugs and mobile phones into the prisons, such as making specially designed boxes to hide such items,

Nakhon Si Thammarat deputy police chief Phudis Norasing yesterday said police were preparing to issue warrants for the arrest of 20 more people involved in the drug trade allegedly run by Mr Natthapol.

Mr Natthapol's assets, worth some 13 million baht, plus 25 bank accounts with 68 million baht cash have been seized, Pol Col Phudis said.

Police say they have obtained information that suggested the former warder had bought many assets, believed to have been acquired from drug money, by using the names of others, mostly his close aides.

'200 inmates in drug trade'

As many as 200 inmates in Nakhon Si Thammarat prison are dealing drugs, with 26 ringleaders in the racket estimated to be worth 350 million baht, says the Corrections Department.

Suchart Wongananchai, the department's director-general, was speaking on Friday after a meeting with the prison commander and police officers in the southern province. They were discussing ways to prevent the smuggling of prohibited items including drugs and mobile phones into the prison that has become notorious for its drug trade.

Mr Suchart said authorities had credible information that at least 200 inmates were likely to be involved in drug trading with 26 of them playing a major role overseeing the business.

He said he had ordered his deputy Kobkiat Kasiwiwat to relocate the 26 ringleaders from the southern region to maximum security prisons in other parts of the country including Khao Bin Central Prison.

The inmates must be detained separately at various prisons, he said, and not be put together at Khao Bin, to bar them from gathering again to continue operating drug distribution from behind bars.

The latest inspections indicated that an unidentified number of mobile phones may have been hidden at locations throughout Nakhon Si Thammarat prison and authorities had yet to discover them. This allowed the inmates to continue to operate and control the drug trade from the prison.

The prison has 160 warders and 5,000 prisoners, he said.

Prison guard Od Sae Pua, 49, was shot and killed last Saturday morning after he refused to cooperate with a drug gang.

The corrections department chief said he had ordered the installation of state-of-the-art mobile phone signal jammers and interception technology at the prison to prevent inmates from making calls.
