Alice Springs Superintendent Jo Foley said a team of Officers were conducting random breath tests south of Kulgera when a Drug Detector Dog had a positive result to the Adelaide man.

“Members from the Southern Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk, the Southern Drug Operations Unit and Kulgera Station were conducting a vehicle checkpoint on the Stuart Highway on Friday when they stopped a vehicle in which the 53-year-old man was a passenger,” Superintendent Foley said.

Drugs charges for past TVNZ editor

A former TVNZ editor and gay activist has been charged with dealing ecstasy, speed and LSD.

Anne Elizabeth Speir, 55, appeared at the Auckland District Court on Thursday facing charges of possession of ecstasy, LSD, amphetamines and cannabis for supply. She was also charged with producing ecstasy.

It is alleged a large amount of cash - believed to be more than $16,000 - was found at her Housing New Zealand-owned home when it was raided by police in May. Speir was bailed to reappear on July 5.

Substances seized during the raid have been sent to Environmental Science and Research for analysis.

She worked on classic TV shows such as A Week Of It during two decades in television with TVNZ and produced Takataapui, a gay lifestyle series for Maori Television in 2004.

Speir was supported in court by two friends. She said that she was concerned about how her elderly father would take the news.

Speir is being represented by barrister Ron Mansfield. "It's very early days," said Mansfield.

"It's all sub-judice so I can't say anything about the case."

Speir will face a jury trial if she pleads not guilty.

Speir, originally from Tauranga, was the first female professional lifeguard on Mt Maunganui beach in the 1970s and began her television career working for South Pacific Television at the end of that decade.

She spoke about her experiences in an interview with Pride NZ last year.

"We were pretty radical then, we did a lot of pro-abortion protesting."

She also told how she believed she faced discrimination from TVNZ in 1979, claiming that she was passed over for promotion. "I was kept on the lowest grade available, because of being a dyke," she claimed.

She is a former chairwoman of the Hero Trust, which organised gay pride parades in Auckland from 1992 to 2001.

Plans for a new pride parade in Auckland were revealed this week.

Speir said she had found it hard to find work in television in recent years because employers favoured young people.

When the Herald on Sunday revealed Ali Mau's relationship with Karleen Edmonds in 2010, Speir said: "Over a quarter of a century ago Marilyn Waring was outed on the front page of Truth newspaper. Clearly nothing has changed, and that deeply saddens me.

"If [Alison] is in a relationship with a woman does she, and that woman too, need to be outed like this?"

Sense of smell detects indoor cannabis plot

Police visiting a Kawakawa home to make inquiries about a burglary by chance found a major indoor cannabis growing operation.

The big bust came on Tuesday as police were investigating a burglary in Russell the previous night. Sergeant Nathan Davis said officers were talking to the occupants of a Kawakawa home when they noticed a strong smell of cannabis. When officers searched the house under the Misuse of Drugs Act they discovered 144 plants, including seedlings, young plants and a room full of mature plants about 70cm high.

The occupants, a man and a woman, were arrested and jointly charged with cultivation of cannabis. They appeared in the Kaikohe District Court on Wednesday and have been remanded in custody.

Mr Nathan said the couple were "anxious but pretty co-operative".

As a result of the Kawakawa bust police discovered a second indoor growing operation near Kerikeri.

Detective Patrick Derbyshire, of the Kerikeri CIB, said a search of a Lemon Grove property, off State Highway 10 north of Kerikeri, uncovered 120 cloned plants, ranging in size from 10cm to 16cm, growing under lights in a garage.

Police had yet to speak to the occupant of the property.

Wellington Drug Squad dismantles major cannabis syndicate

The Wellington Drug Squad has seized hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of cannabis in a five month long investigation which was terminated overnight.

Wellington District Organised Crime Manager Detective Inspector Darrin Thomson says, "Police have severely impacted the cannabis supply chain in our community. This syndicate was responsible for millions of dollars worth of drugs flowing into our community and causing damage to many."

As a result of six search warrants executed last night between Newtown and Kilbirnie, a 68 year old woman and 47 year old man will appear in the Wellington District Court today, charged with cultivating and selling cannabis.

Police also recovered close to 30 pounds of cannabis and around $40,000 in cash.

Three more people were also arrested for possession of cannabis last night but have been bailed to appear in Court at a later date.

Dubbed 'Operation Foxy', Police have spent five months investigating the activities of a well organised, sophisticated commercial drug syndicate supplying tens of thousands of dollars of cannabis each week.

"This group was firmly entrenched in an illicit commodity business that has now been dismantled by Police. We have been gathering evidence of the assets accumulated by this syndicate over a period of time and our Asset Recovery Unit is in the process of restraining several million dollars worth of residential property and cash."

Detective Inspector Thomson says Police believe this group has been operating for a number of years and that their wealth accumulation is directly related to the ongoing supply of cannabis in the Wellington district.

"Cannabis continues to be a harmful substance on a number of fronts. One being the drain on our health system as it is the leading illicit drug involved in hospital admissions, and the other being that purchasers often divert income from other every day necessities required to support their families."

"Operation Foxy should send a clear message to those involved in such activity that if you are accumulating wealth, we will pursue all possible avenues in holding you to account and seize any assets gained from that activity."

Man gave morphine to baby 'wanting good night's sleep', court told

A man has gone on trial accused of putting a lethal dose of morphine into a four-month-old baby's bottle.

Graham Andrew Wilson, 41, allegedly put morphine into his partner's baby's bottle at the couple's Elizabeth South home in Adelaide in 2007.

Wilson has pleaded not guilty to a charge of criminal neglect and is facing trial before a jury in the District Court.

Prosecutor Jeff Powell said Wilson suffered a workplace accident and had taken a variety of painkillers, including morphine.

He said the mother had put the baby down after the girl drank some of the formula made up by Wilson and noticed the infant seemed to be staring and breathing strangely.

The reality may be as simple as this, that he just wanted to get a good night's sleep and that he did something stupid, so stupid in the extreme that it amounted to criminal neglect

Prosecutor Jeff Powell
A locum doctor thought the infant had bronchitis and sent her to the Lyell McEwin hospital in northern Adelaide, where blood tests were done.

The baby was then sent to the Women's and Children's Hospital and spent a week on a ventilator, eventually making a full recovery.

Mr Powell said Adelaide's Forensic Science Centre analysed the blood samples and they indicated there was a potentially-lethal concentration of morphine.

He said Wilson was interviewed twice by police.

'Medical impossibility'

The first time he told them the infant liked to lick his arm and may have extracted the morphine from his perspiration.

Mr Powell said evidence presented during the trial would suggest that was a medical impossibility.

The prosecutor said Wilson subsequently told police he had no recollection of the day concerned, due to his consumption of painkillers and that he may have accidentally dropped a capsule of the painkiller into the feeding bottle while he was taking a capsule himself.

Mr Powell said medical evidence would suggest morphine capsules were intended to work by time release, so for the drug to take immediate effect the capsule would have had to have been crushed into the baby's milk formula.

"It is not the prosecution case that he set out to endanger [the baby's] life," he told the court.

"The reality may be as simple as this, that he just wanted to get a good night's sleep and that he did something stupid, so stupid in the extreme that it amounted to criminal neglect."

The trial before Judge David Smith continues.

Drug charges trigger waring to unwanted visitors

Drug dealers have been warned to steer clear of Aboriginal communities after drug charges were laid in the Dampier Peninsula last week.

After a tip-off from community leaders at One Arm Point, police intercepted a vehicle and allegedly found about 40 grams of cannabis and more than $7,000 in cash.

A 33-year-old Margaret River man was charged with 10 drug-related offences - two local men were also charged.

After the arrests, community elders asked police to issue notices to four people to leave the community.

Senior Sergeant Neville Ripp says unwanted visits to Aboriginal communities will not be tolerated.

"I have got one thing to say to people who do bring cannabis and other drugs or paraphernalia into these Aboriginal communities - we do patrol the highways, we will stop your vehicle, we will search your vehicle and if needed we will put you before the courts," he said.

Senior Sergeant Ripp says the incident should serve as a warning to unwanted visitors.

"I served four notices that they were to leave the community ASAP and never to return to that community," he said.

"If people think they can go into these communities to live, they're wrong. They have to attend at the office and it's only daily visits."

Murder-accused admits drug use before Kiwi's fall

The Perth man who pushed a New Zealand man through a second-storey window, causing him to fall to his death, has taken to the witness stand at his own murder trial, admitting he had taken ecstasy and marijuana in the hours before the incident.

Stefan Pahia Schmidt, 25, has not denied pushing Andy Marshall, the 29-year-old cousin of slain Feilding farmer Scott Guy, through the hotel window but said it was accidental.

He has pleaded not guilty to murder.

His trial at the West Australian Supreme Court began last week, and yesterday the court heard from Schmidt himself.

On the day of the fatal incident, Schmidt had begun drinking alcohol at 10.30am, and took two ecstasy tablets and smoked several marijuana joints throughout the day, the West Australian reported.

At some stage in the night he and one of his friends had a fight about a woman.

Trying to resolve the situation he decided to ask the woman to leave.

But when he went to speak with her, Schmidt noticed she was talking to Mr Marshall.

He told the court that he went to Mr Marshall and told him to "f*** off", to which Mr Marshall replied something that Schmidt could not recall.

"I felt annoyed that he had responded to me like that," Schmidt said.

"I pushed him with my left hand to the front region of his chest/shoulder.

"It was not overly dramatic, but I could not say for sure how hard I pushed him."

He was in disbelief and could not comprehend what happened when Mr Marshall fell through the window, and did not intend for Mr Marshall to die, nor to hurt him, he said.

He left the hotel and saw Mr Marshall lying on the ground, but his instinct told him to home to go home and gather his thoughts.

He said he still could not comprehend what had happened.

The trial is due to finish this week.
