I don't get the comment about stealing other cultures and watering it down. What do you expect from a country full of immigrants? Sure there aren't as many first generation immigrants as before, but there are plenty of 2nd and 3rd generation immigrants that have only married people with the same background as them. Of course the culture will be watered down though since these people are now living in a different country, with different political, geographic, and demographic variables at play. If you walk down my block of about 24 houses, you will come across at least 7 different languages being spoken in these homes since I live in an area where a lot of people have migrated here in the last 50 years or less, but these people aren't going to fully act like they did in their mother country. Also some of them will marry someone whose family has been in American for many generations, so that will obviously effect what their children are brought up on.
The "stereotypical American" that a lot of you seem to be unable to get past, only makes up a very small percentage of the American population, and a lot of Americans will never come across a person that acts that way in their whole life. Basically they seem just as odd to most Americans as they do to all of you in the UK. Don't you guys have some kind of hillbillies in the countryside? Like the people you talk about shagging sheep? Well that's not the majority of your population, and not who you would want to represent the majority of youl. Well, the same thing applies here.
It's not about the fact your culture is a mish mash of immigrant cultures. It's about the fact that it is so far removed from the culture that it originated from, presumably so you can call it American, that it bares no resembelence to the real deal. We have plenty of Italians here. 5-10 minutes walk from my house you can go and eat Italian that won't be far off what you would be served in Italy. I guess it's because America is so far away from your ancestral homelands that you have made it up as you've gone along, and you can't get quality ingredients or something. When I went to vote in my local primary school, there was a wall with 'welcome' in every language spoken by every child that went there, and there were 37 in total, so it's not like we lack diversity or anything. I can't get why you can't just make up more unique things than you currently do, and just accept that the things we already spent hundreds or even thousands of years perfecting are already the best they can be?
I obviously know that there is no such thing as a stereotypical American. I am taking the piss. I don't like or dislike Americans any more than British people. Your enthusiasm and get up and go is very tiring, and so is the obsession with being positive and proud of your country, but they are hardly what I would call faults. Is a total lack of a sense of humour part of your culture or something? I thought that was just a French trait or have you guys been spending too much time in the Vegas Paris? I like the sheep shagger comment, keep them coming.
