The 2019 Trump Presidency Thread

The world is black and white and only you can see it huh?

I applaud you're heroism and purity of vision. Thank God someone like you is here to tell us the truth among so many lies.

Typical reponse. Ridicule and get personal instead of addressing the argument. Because it's solid.

How do you explain Trump's support growing among minorities if Trump is racist? This induces cognitive dissonance, because the only way to rationalize Trump is racist - is by considering the minorities who support him too stupid to know what's best for themselves. Thank God someone like you is here to tell them what they should be thinking about the president?

lots of voters vote against their own interests and will discount some positions because they prioritize others. that doesn't make them stupid.

that some members of racial minorities vote for trump doesn't mean he's not racist. that's an oddly naive belief.

alasdair

Are you saying that some people consider him racist but are ignoring it due to other things? In that case, what would he be doing that is so valuable to these minorities that they're willing to ignore his racism? It would have to be something pretty substantial, because racism is really, really bad. And it seems counter-intuitive for a racist person to engage in actions that will benefit minorities.

or are you saying that those members of racial minorities who support Trump are too dumb to realize that Trumps is racist? I mean you've worked it out, a white male. You know that Trump is racist. But how come all of those african-americans, hispanics and asians (numbers growing) support the president? If he's obviously racist, shouldn't they have worked it out by now? Why haven't they?

You really assume a lot about me and my beliefs.

I'm not assuming, by the nature of you replying to that comment I know that you probably think that Trump is racist, and therefore are one of the people that my comment was directed at.

I'm not assuming

Just to be clear so that we're not assuming - do you think that the President of the United States is racist?

If so, the minorities who support him - too dumb to realize, or ignoring it due to the other benefits? If so, what benefits?

do you think that the President of the United States is racist?
No, he's just finding scapegoats. I don't think it matters if he's racist or not.
too dumb to realize, or ignoring it due to the other benefits? If so, what benefits?
I think a lot of people regardless of race are too dumb to realize that they are likely voting against their best interests.

In the case of Trump and minorities, can you give any examples?
I don't think I should have to because others have done so dozens of times in this thread alone, but his policies are not negatively affecting any one racial group, they're affecting a broad swath of Americans regardless of race or sex.

His rhetoric is only an expression of other Republican's values and thus I blame the whole Republican party for things such as the El Paso shooting.

Liberals who think Trump is racist hate black and hispanic Trump supporters.
They consider them stupid and traitors of their race.
This is evident because otherwise they would not believe Trump is racist.
Ironically this makes them kinda racist.

... That's some world class mental gymnastics. 10 out of 10.

May I inquire what this line of discussion is hoping to achieve? Doesn't seem to be moving the ball anywhere. Doesn't seem to even have a ball to begin with. But it's ya'lls dime, spend it how you wish.
He was asking why I thought he'd never seen a black person before.

Ali caught the ball with ease...

Yeah, the point was made. I was asking if the extended personal comments achieved anything once the point was made. Maybe that's my problem - I generally view discussion as a practical matter trying to achieve some goal of understanding. I have issue when people waste time with 'oh yeah?'...my problem, so I'll move on.

Fair enough alasdair. But that kind of behaviour is frowned upon today, just a heads up.(y)
Dude he's a chill poster I don't know why you have to agitate alasdair he doesn't bother anyone. He is well-spoken, perhaps out-spoken, but has 100% earned it in my book. All around good guy, objective, isn't afraid to stand up to me if I'm not being logical. I respect him.

i appreciate your input I really do but let's try to all be friends <3 PLUR and all <3

Man this is an ugly conversation right now. :\

According to college educated white liberals who live in the burbs, yes.

I know that there is this pervasive idea on the right that all college educated liberals are social justice warriors and extreme leftists, but that is just as ridiculous as saying "all Trump supports are racists". It's exactly the same thing. If you want people to stop labeling all MAGA hat wearing people as racist scumbags, you might want to stop trying to label all liberals as Antifa-supporting SJWs. Quit watching the news so much (that's directed to everyone). Most people are way more in the middle than that. This extreme partisan divide is by design and so many people are walking right into it gleefully.

First off, let me just say that I don't think Trump is racist. I think he's just pandering to his base, most of whom are afraid of the steady reduction in their quality of life and security, and some of whom are actually bigots. He knows how to rile people up, and what his followers want to hear. The right has been making immigrants a target for many years and Trump has played on that pre-existing issue.

But that said, even if I DID think Trump was a racist, what you said is nonsense. I could believe that black and Latino voters were fooled, after all, there is as much "Trump is innocent and the liberal media lies" propaganda as there is "Trump is a racist bigot" propaganda. Also as ali said, many voters vote in their own interest and not in the interest of the greater good. So wealthy minorities might support him regardless, because he's a Republican and because he is helping the wealthy. Suggesting that anyone who thinks Trump is racist hates all the minorites who support him and that they are racist themselves because of it is hyperbole of the worst kind.

Everything has to be black or white these days (on both sides). No one is even listening to each other anymore, everyone has created their own echo chamber inside their heads. Not everyone obviously but it's far too common. It's really sad and frightening. We're acting like half the population is our enemy, when our enemy is the one who engineered this bullshit division. If we're not careful it's going to end very, very badly.
