Looking up at the sky I swear I could touch the stars
So stood up and grabbed at what was there
But my hands came up empty
I looked up to the sky and I swear that if I just tried hard enough I could touch the stars
So I got on my tippie toes and reached with all my might
Still my hands came up empty
I looked up to the sky and I knew I had to touch just one star even if it was only for a second
So I pushed off the ground and jumped with all my might
Still I had nothing to show for my efforts, my hands came up empty
You came along and saw my struggle
Picked me up and put me on your shoulders
And I reached to the sky, still came up empty handed
I got off your shoulders and I started to cry
“Don’t cry” you said “just look around”
So I dried my eyes and cleared my vision
As I looked around I realized I was standing amongst the stars
Suddenly I didn’t need to touch them….
….because I realized I was part of them
Looking up to the night sky I longed to hold a star in my hand
So I stood up and grabbed at the sky
But my hands came up empty
I looked back up and thought, "I know I could touch one if just tried hard enough"
So I got up on my tippie toes and reached with all my might
Still my hands came up empty
I looked back up to the stars and I couldn't control the desire to touch one
So I pushed off the ground and jumped with all my might
But I came down with a crash and nothing to show for my efforts
You came along and saw my struggle
"What are you doing" you asked
"Trying to touch the stars" I said
"well you'll never do it by trying so hard, you need a change in perspective"
You picked me u and put me on your shoulders
I reached out and grabbed at what I could
still I failed
You laughed and said "just look, that's all it takes"
I opened my eyes for the first time and saw the night sky surrounding me like a blanket
Suddenly I didn't need to touch them anymore...
because I realized they weren't something to be touched
they were just something to be a part of.
