Tests find banned drugs on British legal high sites
By Jim Reed
Newsbeat reporter

A number of British websites are breaking the law by selling so-called legal highs made from banned class B drugs, a Newsbeat investigation has found.

Tests on five different products bought from online shops showed most contained chemicals already illegal under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Police are warning anyone caught with the powders could face prosecution and end up with a criminal record.

Interesting article. I watched the video. That chap seems fairly nice. It's pretty wrong that he's being prosecuted for something he ordered that he believed to be legal. I think it's also pretty damn harsh to prosecute somebody who only just survived his encounter with a drug. Man I hate the law sometimes.

"The bottom line is, if you're suspicious, don't buy it because it might be illegal and you could get a criminal record for life."

When a criminal record is the worst thing that could happen to you as the result of drug possession and use, then there's a serious problem.

"Penalties against drug use should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself."
-Jimmy Carter

I thought there was a defence in uk law where if you could prove you thought the substance was legal you could be let off.

ie if you were sold say caffeine on the internet and you were sold cocaine (lucky haha) and the police got wind of it from the sorting office you'd be ok.

im probably 100% wrong here though.

that is complete bullshit that, vendors selling illegal drugs and the customers getting prosecuted

I think consuming legal highs doesn't affect badly to the human body, but over dosage definitely may cause problems. In some countries people are using highs often, which is not safe.

"I thought if you could get it off the internet then it couldn't be bad. I turned up to a party and suddenly got really paranoid. I had no idea what was going on." - Jack, who was hospitalized on a life support machine.

What the fuck, you can get overdosed on aspirin, paracetamol, alcohol and die. fucking TROLL - DONT DO 1 G LINES in front of your BRO douchebag friends and blame later Internet. He had no idea what was going on??? -Fucking donk. Do a little research in that internet about the drugs, and know the danger before you snort something and you will be ok. FOR FUCK SAKE!!!!

I completely agree. The vendor should be punished, not the customer. Nevertheless, I could see another Operation Ismene coming though, whereby customers could randomly be questioned or even raided by the police, although I'd hope the authorities would be sensible enough to focus on the vendors instead by shutting them down.

Seems to me that if you're going to buy chemicals online to stick to a reputed RC vendor who is honest about what they're selling and perhaps to use sites not based in the UK since a domestic site could be raided with the police pursuing customers, etc. Importing a small amount is more likely to only result in a love letter if caught.

The whole legals industry has become a shambles though due to prohibitionist laws.

I don't understand how you can make this statement when its not even known what chemicals some of these legal highs contain. Some of them could very well be harmful.
