Testing a needle for presence of heroin

hate to be an asshole but I have to wonder about the intelligence of someone who would knowingly contract HIV...8)
i thought it was beautiful, that you'd be willing to do that for her...she's very lucky to have someone willing to sacrifice so much for her, if that's not true love i don't know what is

Dude are you mental? Thinking of poking yourself? I know you love this girl but no one is worth your life, I mean absolutely NO ONE. Let alone a completely dumbass pride motivated reason like this. Give her the meds, use a rubber, be smart. If she really loves you she will understand why you are protecting yourself, unless of course she doesn't really love you and you are just whipped into delusion...

Whatever you do, if she gets AIDS, DO NOT give it to yourself. Think about it, how will you be able to take care of her if you are sick also? What if you eventually end up checking out before her, do you want her to suffer the loss her love? Imagine the guilt you will be forcing upon her (even if she won't admit it). What if you both change in the future and don't feel the same about each other. What if she dumps you in 5 years? The list of questions is endless. Its so incredibly irrational (even though I know your heart is in the right place). There are so many more ways to show your love and dedication. If you poke yourself, its guaranteed you both will eventually regret it.

Risk of HIV transmission from medically acquired needle stick injury is roughly 0.3% (eg - Patz & Jodrey 1995 Occupational health in surgery: risks extend beyond the operating room:
The risk of acquiring a disease from one percutaneous exposure is 0.3-0.4% for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) 6-30% for hepatitis B virus (HBV) and 2.7-10% for hepatitis C virus (HCV).

In a community setting, the risk of blood borne virus transmission drops dramatically. For example - there is not one recorded case of HIV transmission from a needlestick injury in a community setting in the world . There has been one confirmed case of a hep C transmission in this way (Spain 2005).

So try and relax - you've probably got more chance of being run over by a bus than of contracting HIV or HCV from stepping on a needle on the ground. I'd personally advise against the PEP.... but it's up to you.

ayjay, thanks for posting that, it is a figure we've stared at a bunch. It is the main reason we're unlikely to use the PEP, because you're talking 30/10,000 people, and that's with exposure to a needle prick with HIV on it. Given that this may never have had it, and the fact that even if it did, the virus dies as it sits there, the likelihood of HIV plummets. It just seems like an unjustifiably small chance to begin the PEP.

About me contracting it, why don't I just leave it like this - it doesn't matter what you think of my choices, with all due respect, i'm just a person on a message board. You don't know the first thing about us or myself, and that isn't much of a topic for discussing with people who don't know me in the first place. It's not a 'maybe' situation, if it happens it happens. I already said that I didn't stick myself with it because I could have put us in a position where I ended up catching somethign and she didn't. Again, with all the respect I can give, it's wasted typing giving me recommendations on that, this thread's purpose was for coming up with a decision on whether to do PEP or not, and it wouldn't have mattered if there were 10000 posts on here, all telling me not to, it just wouldn't matter. It's just not something I'm flexible on.

Someone stepped on a needle, and it was full of dope, and by stepping on the needle it went through their shoe, and injected the dope into them???
DAMN. where were the needles like that when i was a dope fiend???
I'd be way more worried about HIV and Hep C.
The question just seems bizarre to me. It makes no sense whatsoever

it went through sock only, not shoe. I was under the impression at first, and may have posted such, that it went through shoe then sock, but she was wearing shoes that had much of the top of her foot exposed, she must have stepped on the plunger and flipped the thing.

We've checked a ton of resources, and looked extensively through the poz site recommended (thanks a ton btw, that was a great resource), and are not going to do the PEP. There's a 1/4 chance of severe side effects from the treatment, and the chances of her having contracted anything are infinitely small that it doesn't justify it.

I'm not sure you understand the situation. She didn't shoot up a bunch of dope through her foot by stepping on a needle. She's walking into a store, that was next to a pawn shop. A needle that was laying on the ground right in front of the pawn shop poked through her skin, causing a drop of blood to come out of her foot, so it definitely went into her body. We had little time to make a decision regarding the harsh PEP treatment options. The dangers of the treatment, compared to the extremely unlikely chance that she could have contracted something, made us/her decide against the PEP.

But no, we weren't afraid that she had taken some heroin. She's never used it before, opiates aren't really a drug she likes, but that wouldn't really matter, it'd be no big deal. We were afraid she'd maybe have contracted HIV, but again, that seems incredibly unlikely.

Why would she be? I use H responsibly, and would never ever drop a needle on the ground (I don't even use needles in the first place, as I've never had a level of tolerance that would let me use much more than a bag, insufflated, in a day). If I ever did something like leaving an open needle on the ground, using doses that were approaching overdose, or using in excess, surely she'd be upset. I like H a lot, but it's not really something that's available to me. Oxy is cool, but it's just waaaaay too expensive for my tastes, so my opiate usage is pretty limited. I just moved, so now I don't know a single person who I could even get an opiate from, so it'd be likely that I won't be doing any in the near future.

Thanks again for the advice, especially that 'poz' resource, that was outstanding.

Just wanted to update this thread, we are clean on all fronts :)

It was scary though waiting, and also when they had the results, they told us there was a reaction to hepB, but it turns out it was a reaction to a previous immunization, not that we had hepb. So we are negative on hepb, hepc, and HIV (we tested about 4-5 months after the exposure, so the negative HIV should be pretty solid based on what I know about how long it can take to show up).

Go get a bag & celebrate! :)
errrrrr, was mentioned earlier, I just moved to FL from MA, and unfortunately don't have any connections that could get me any good opiates (not that I really have the time currently to use them anyways, but I'd still love to grab some for future use, but unfortunately I've met 1 person since I've been here who's in 'the scene', so for now I'm gonna just have to bide my time. Actually, oddly enough, there's 2 definite people in my area who no doubt use heroin (I've heard them explicitly referring to it, there's ZERO doubt they're using). But they're 'problem' people in my neighborhood, always have cops coming to their places for dumb stuff, so I have no interest in meeting them (hmmm, let me rephrase. I have a ton of interest in meeting them to score through their hookups, but it's just not worth it, as I have no interest in associating with them. I'd sooner just fake pain, get a bunch of T3 scripts, CWE them, and go that route before dealing with these crazy assholes!).

But yeah, I (we) are very, very excited, it's a weird feeling, waiting for HIV test results.

ur such a fuckin idiot if you would give yourself aids purposefully just cause your girl has it. thats the most ignorant shit i've ever heard of in my life. ruining your own life just because your girlfriends life is gunna be fucked it just RETARDED

fuckin a, i knows how it is thinking there is the possibility of having contracted diseases, and the relief when you get your results back!

Dude I already said in this thread that I'm not going to discuss how I would've handled my situation. If you've never had someone you'd die for / with, then from where I'm standing that sucks for you.

But watch the personal insults kid, I'm not much on internet flame wars. I live in central FL, if you really have that much hatred, come down to tampa and tell me to my face. Short of that, keep the shit to yourself.

Yeah seriously! It was such a weird feeling wondering, for so many weeks, if our lives were gonna go the way we've been planning for them to go, or if everything was gonna be turned upside down and we'd be living by the clock/calendar with shortened lives. Crazy stuff. Very glad it's over!!

I just wanted to commend you, bingalpaws, on your entire outlook on the situation, your commitment to your relationship and your responsible use of H. I am very thankful that everything appears to have turned out okay for your fiancee and yourself. I wish you the best of luck in your life in a new state and your eventual marriage to this woman you apparently love and respect beyond all measure.:)
