I had to do this several years ago so it isn't a current issue for but I've always wondered how others
have done this.

My psych wrote a letter that was detailed enough to convince them that I needed residential treatment,
but not so detailed that it sent my employer on a witch hunt. I had a supportive sibling (brother) who
worked for large companies and knew the ins-and-outs of FMLA leave and ADA protection. Because
I was an absolute wreck at the time, it was good to have someone rational there, otherwise I would
have cried throughout the entire meeting.

They were supportive, protected my right to privacy (although I know there was some gossip about
it but who cares) and I returned to my job after 6 weeks.

Anyone else ever have to do this, and, if so, how did you handle it?

I'm going through this now and have an appointment tommrow morning after work(I work overnights) after I get home I'll post how it went.

Also going through this...have been signed off for about 5 weeks for anxiety and depression and have just been offered a cash settlement to resign...wondering whether to take it? Gunna be in the the region of £2000 plus maybe a bit more...have only been there 9 months so dont really have many rights (under 12 months in the uk and they can sack you without reason). Am not fit for work atm so I think it makes sense.

I wouldn't accept that w/o speaking with an attorney or other office that knows about the protection of people with disabilities in your country.

Think about the effect that this would have upon your ability to gain future employment.

I went to my employers (FDNY) crisis unit and they were great it's very confidential even though there will be gossip at my house since I will be gone for 28 days I don't really care. I get to go to a very nice rehab/detox free of charge and keep my job all while still getting paid for my time away. The rehab only has people in my proffesion or a similiar line of work in it also, I feel hopefull and positive about getting clean and excited to get another CHance at a leading a healthy life.

Good for you. We'll see you on the outside.

I was off last year for about 8 weeks for the same and my employer offered to pay me of on my return, I've been there 10 years with barely a day off sick and had been under a stupid amount of pressure the last couple of years.

I refused outright as I needed the job and to prove to myself I could work through soem issues, I'll move on when I'm good and ready. We never talked hard cash, maybe of they's offered me £50K or summit I mighht have taken a different appoach !

In my situation I could have easily taken them to legal on the way I'd been treated over those 2 years and they knew it, but to be fair they paod me full pay whilst I was off and have been suportive (new Boss) since my return.

I have been on short term disability for the last 3 weeks now. I should be off for another 3 weeks and then go back to work on a modify work schedule. I am not going through a drug treatment program, but I am going through I had a nervous breakdown program. My shrink just gave me 2 off work orders. One that goes to my emploer that does not have a diagnosis on it and another one that goes to the state that has the diagonosis on it. In California, you are not required to tell your employer why you are out of work. Hell, you don't even have to tell them why you are calling in sick. It is none of their business as long as you are doing things by the books. You could always check with your Human Resources Department.

This is true. The Americans with Disabilities Act states that one may use "plain English" when describing their disability. You don't have to provide a
definitive diagnosis. I did when asking for medical leave, but I work in the field so it was appropriate.

Been wondering how this works. I really would like to get into residential treatment but I'm scared about how it will affect my job.......guess I need to do some research.

The first thing you should look into is whether or not you are eligible for FMLA leave which is 12 weeks of unpaid leave. Contrary to popular
belief, not everyone is eligible: your employer must employ at least 50 people, and you must have been at this job for at least 12 months at
greater than 1,250 hours (~25 hours/week).

Everybody's case is different, so if you think you need it, pursue it.
