Television while tripping

slimvictor, I think you are being a bit elitist with your views. Nobody is suggesting that one should *only* watch TV/movies while tripping and miss out on other opportunities to enjoy a trip. I have done plenty of the things on your list. However TV/Movies can take me to places that regular trips cannot. Furthermore certain types of tv/movies just are considerably more enjoyable on drugs than sober. There is a bit of a difference between watching infomercials and watching something like Avatar ... the point being that not all TV/movies are created equally.

Certain substances lend themselves to certain types of experiences better than others. In particular Ketamine seems to do wonders for an escapist movie trip ... you completely lose your sense of self and the only reality is the characters and the situations they are in. 2c-e for me makes certain movies have depth perception. 3d glasses give me headaches and eyestrain, but on 2c-e I can watch something like Avatar and it seems like its in 3d, it has full depth perception and feels like "being there". OTOH I don't enjoy watching anything on acid because it feels like some kind of mind-control thing where everything is speaking directly to me as if it is some kind of encoded hidden message. For a drug like that I'd prefer to just listen to music and relax.

Also I really am not fond of doing drugs out in public, so I'd much prefer to watch a video of a concert in 5.1 than trip at an actual live concert. I have two NIN DVD concerts; both of which concerts I actually went to live (sober), but when I trip out and watch them on DVD it provides me with the same degree of emotion as it did when being at the real concert, and is considerably less hassle than going to a live concert.

So I just think you haven't really thought this one through all the way. Random channel flipping thru reality shows and infomercials and ads is probably a boring way to spend a trip, but if you have some sort of plan of watching something in particular then TV and movies have as much to offer as any other kind of activity.

Tripping and TV don’t mix well IMO.
TV is a tool to bring one back to the real world. Like taking a Xanax

It prevents full emersion into the LSD experience. what I mean is; if you have to try and understand what is being said you will be unable to reach ego death

Also your playing with fire IMO if you watch TV. I it can turn a trip into a nightmare depending on the programing

I'm with specialk and girlygirl. Television/movies can be very rewarding whilst tripping (especially when using dissociatives). It is foolish to assume that everything committed to film is as vacuous as the drivel that business-minded tv networks/Hollywood studios shovel out for mass consumption. Film is a medium of art just as much as music, painting, sculpture, or literature, and I don't really hear anyone saying that appreciating pieces in those mediums whilst tripping is an unworthy expenditure of one's time.

So, I'm taking some heat here, and possibly deserve it.
But overall, I don't think that it's fair.
I did take pains to say that I did not want to insult anyone, and I meant it.
I do not look down at anyone for choosing to watch TV on their trips.
I said that, and I honestly meant it.
It is also true that I cannot possibly fathom why anyone would want to do so.
So, here is what I have heard as responses to my risky comment:

Pegasus: aren't you being closed-minded? Me: already responded (see above)
Special K: you are being closed-minded, and I will do what I want. Me: Of course, I never told anyone not to watch TV; I actually took pains to say that I am not judging anyone else but simply can't understand it.
Girlygrrl: you are being elitist. See my response to Special K two lines above. I am not saying anyone is lower/worse than me because they choose to watch TV.
Also, you watch concerts, which is very different than watching TV, to me. I would not mind watching live music while tripping, though there is a good chance that I would not focus on the visuals, but on the music instead.
Never Knows Best: but film is art. Me: I agree that it has that potential, but 99% of what is on TV is not artful, in my opinion, and I would even say that 95% of the movies I have seen are not truly artful (again, IMO). And what is left, while wonderful, is not something that I tend to gravitate to while tripping. The few times I have, it has seemed shallow and meaningless, even though I enjoy it while sober or high.

I didn't try to offend anyone, but several people seemed offended.
Maybe I should have stated many times that I do not judge others for what they choose to do with their trips, instead of once or twice?
Maybe people didn't believe me when I said this?
Maybe people felt threatened?

I guess I was hoping that people would respond by arguing that watching TV is/can be valuable while tripping, or provide eye-opening experiences in that state.
And some did, but most had a certain attitude as if I had been offensive.
Not sure why.
Can someone explain?

My whole point is that certain TV/movies can be just as interesting and valuable while tripping as any of the other activities you listed in your rant.

I certainly think that a quality story can be a lot more moving/impactful than playing with a piece of ice and staring at your bedspread (not that I haven't done those things too)

I recently saw the movie Limitless on DXM and found it very motivational. I feel like the dissociative effect enhanced the movie and made it more inspirational than the simple popcorn/thriller flick that it was intended to be.

This thread doesn't seem to be about people randomly flipping thru channels and watching whatever pops up. At least for me this thread about how to best make use of the medium for enhancing one's trips. I do believe that if you go into the experience with a plan, a simple TV show or movie (especially if it is ad-free) can become a very deep and moving experience.

"99% of what is on TV is not artful, in my opinion, and I would even say that 95% of the movies I have seen are not truly artful" ...

Perhaps, but the 1-5% of things that are artful are worth discussing. Plus not everything has to be "deep" or spiritual or mind-blowing, sometimes it is nice just to escape reality and "have fun".

Trip does not necessarily mean LSD...and not every LSD experience needs to be focused on reaching ego death. Personally I'd not watch TV on LSD unless its something that I feel passionately about and have already enjoyed sober. Maybe something like "The Secret" or whatever, but it seems like LSD make TV "talk to me" as if I'm getting programmed/brainwashed/mind-controlled where everything seems very personal and direct...not something I find enjoyable in most cases.

But yes, you should plan out your TV/movie experiences ahead of time instead of blindly flipping channels.

Once I watched plain old tv no-signal snow and listened to the white noise for a long time... I started seeing horrible faces and hearing evil voices... I think it made me temporarily scizophrenic or something, dont try it. But a good really trippy movie can I agree focus a comeup experience, then turn it off and just lay back & close your eyes to some music.

I hear you there, once while tripping I sat and listened/played with a white noise generator for probably and hour, and heard some scary shit. Even after I got up, and went to do other things, I swear I could still hear those fucked up voices here and there. They almost reminded me of the way voices sound played backwards. But angry.

After going to a Pretty Lights concert, my friend and I were tripping on DOx adulterated blotter and still rolling a bit. The static lines on the tv were MUCH more interesting than other shows. When the people who weren't tripping changed the channel, my friend and I exclaimed "NO CHANGE IT BACK I WANTED TO WATCH THAT." Actual TV shows were hilarious but in the same way that magazines were. Everybodys faces would vividly distort in front of us and change sizes. Odd expressions were noticed whether they were really there or not.

But other than that, TV and other electronics usually are too grounding for me to enjoy.

i watched teen mom while tripping once. oh boy. also last time i tripped i watched the ESPN documentary on Reggie Miller, it was actually pretty sick.

I once watched SNL after smoking some bud during the comedown of a shroom trip. There was this chubby black guy on the show who just looked so hilarious at the time that every time I'd look at him I would laugh so hard. It was probably the most amused I have ever been. I felt like a little kid laughing at something really dumb and simple like a fart noise.

Later in the DOx trip we were looking through magazines laughing so hard for unknown reasons. It was funny/amusing enough to keep us from watching our female friends dance for us :P

TV and tripping are definitely NOT antithetical. I got this recently and can confirm - This is REALLY excellent TV to watch tripping, and played over major sound system... quite awesome, manages to be both epic and contemplative at the same time:

I think that the absolute best shit to watch on TV while tripping is public access. I once tripped liquid LSA in Seattle and ended up watching a bunch of public access in the hotel. I remember two of the shows very vividly.

The first was an Art Show. It consisted of pictures of paintings, sculptures and other works of art flashed in the screen for about 3 seconds at a time. There seemed to be no theme or pattern, just completely random works of art. If there had been commentary, it would have just been like "here's some art, here's some more art, more art, more art, more art, etc....."

The second show I remember was designed to teach children Spanish. It was pretty much all just numbers and basic vocabulary and whatnot. The female host of the show was pretty bizarre looking, especially while tripping. Every once and a while she would look at the camera and say "Starbucks!", and in the background, children's voices would respond with "Yaaaaaaay!". This happened about once every 15 minutes or so. Definitely some bizarre shit.

I was tripping on lsd and spongebob square pants was on....I have never laughed so much...at points I thought I was IN the spongebob episode
