Teens smoking weed..Is it a good idea ?

I started smoking when I was 15..... you said you started smoking for many reasons... I never had a reason to smoke. I just smoked because I liked it.... I still do and I'm 55 years old now. If you're smoking for a reason, you should take another look at that...

I started smoking at 15 but I kept it to a minimum maybe just once a month or a few times a month until I was 18 when I started doing it on weekends for a period of time with friends. Aside from a few days in the summer when I was 17 I did not smoke daily at all until long after I was an adult.

Don't get me wrong I did go through a period of my life where for about half a year I was drinking, smoking, and partying daily but I was in my early 20s and in college and looking back it was not good but it's not like I can change my past and I do not binge drink daily like I used to then. I'm not an alcoholic but I would have easily became one if I'd kept drinking like that since I do have alcoholism in my background with relatives and I was taught how to drink booze at first by alcoholics. I was depressed and in a period of my life where I was drinking a lot and living in an area where booze was very cheap and in retrospect it was quite scary.

I have multiple university degrees, have held multiple respected long term jobs, and you can be a pot smoker and have this but it has to do with your priorities. I never smoked or partied when I had work to do such as writing long essays, studying for exams, smoking before work, staying up all night before work/exams partying, or got into smoking daily and doing nothing else when I knew I had other work and priorities that had to come first before work, education, or other things.

I hope this makes sense. I did start drinking when I was young and that for sure was not good since IME it was worse than any herb or psychedelics or even prescription opiates and prescription stimulants I used as a teenager or young adult.

hey, FUCK you jamesmartin mang!
imma chase ye down with a chainsaw ya canadian goose!!!

:D

ya know im just playin bruvvaaaaa...
but yeah, personally, if i could, id tell my 14 year old self to wait at least a few years before trying cannabis.

it fucked my school life, as back then you dont really understand the concept of moderation.
loved the high though!
smoking a quarter ounce of hashish with my friends each day, comin in stoned as fuck, dancin in classrooms and all sorts of mad shit...
haha..... good tiiiiiiiiiiiimes =D

I have to go with "yes". I used to think it was bad, I did start smoking at age 17 though. Now that I am no longer a teenager I've realized that now I have responsibilities and getting stupid retarded high all the time isn't enjoyable at all. I've pretty much completely stopped smoking pot now that I'm 20, the teenage years are probably the most fun to smoke in. Cannabis makes me stupid and fuck and lazy, its something that I can't be anymore. Teenagers are stupid as fuck and lazy any way, they might as well be high too.

^ dude thats just you... allot of people can handle their shit when they smoke...

I agree with whoever said its a personal thing. So far I haven't heard any good reliable evidence that says its gonna make you crazy (If you aren't already crazy) stupid (if you aren't already stupid) or lazy (if you aren't already lazy). Sooo as far as long term detriments.. well the only ones I can think of are social and academic (again, if you cant handle your shit). As far as the social aspect goes, just don't be a fuckin dirt bag. Use your brain... Like hey maybe weed isn't bad but you probably shouldn't roll every weekend when your 15. Play some sports (lacrosse is fucking mint when you're lit). I am a firm believer that its not the weed that makes people turn away from 'normal society' as teenagers, its their own selves. Most of the 'popular' kids at my school smoked but there were still those weird kids no one talked to who supossedly blazed all the time. Weed didnt make them weird.

My dad started smoking when he was a teen. He's got a masters degree, he's done well at pretty much every thing he does. He's just now starting to forget stuff but I think that's because he's 60...

I didn't smoke until I was 22 maybe. I'm bipolar and it definitely helps with when I've got way too much energy or anxiety. Or when I stop eating. I do notice that I tend to "forget" things, that is, I get sidetracked, but I'd eventually get back to where I started. I try to write everything down. But, I've been doing that since I was 7 (getting distracted/writing things down), and I didn't smoke til 22. So maybe my memory just sucks anyway lol.
I try my best to keep sharp when I'm high, which might take some of the fun out of doing it? I don't know. I have a good time.

Of course if you're smokin it you're doing damage to your lungs, no matter how early you start. Vape or eat!

my lungs actually improved.... i can inhale like a fucking vacuum cleaner no joke i should be a legend. training.

but because of the way i abused it i do have many negative side effects. 2 yrs straight of all day every day smoking. a few week long breaks. i have lost my memory, short and long term. the last 2 yrs is a cloud. i have lost my already short attention span... my ADD has gotten out of control. my anxiety is better when high though. thats what really matters to me. it has also made me impatient which makes me impulsive which makes me try harder stuff, as much as i hate to contribute to the gateway theory. but it makes me crave opiates less which is amazing

When I trained for my lifeguard qualification, we were asked to swim a length of a pool underwater. Me and the one other smoker were the only ones to manage it out of twelve. That certainly shut the self-righteous health freaks up. Anecdotal evidence of course, but worth mentioning.

Thanks guy .

So like I said there is many sides to this story .

I guess if I was high for around 12 hours (I.e during the day )
then didn't smoke for the 12 hours after that I could kinda protect myself if you get my drift ?

dude i know! i had a breath-holding contest with my girlfriend who is a swimmer cuz she thought she knew the facts hahah. sweet sweet victory...

I've been smoking since I was 14 and I'm 21 now.

It's a double-edged sword, man. It's not that it's that unhealthy to be smoking herb when you're young, it's that you don't have a lot of responsibility yet and can get your priorities all fucked up, i.e. putting getting high before everything else.

if you can control your usage, then more power to ya bro. try to only smoke after doing something productive, so it will be like a reward.

I'd blaze outside of school everyday before practice but not really before games haha
Yeah me to man, every fucking day but not for games... Until the last half of the season senior year when I realized I was never going to go anywhere with lacrosse, then I just tried to see how many people I could fuck up hahaha good times.

Hahaha the weird stoner. If you've never met one then chances are you yourself are a weird stoner!
dude there was this kid who would come over to us like atleast a couple times a week after school and ask for a gram or whatever. My buddy used to sling at the time so he would give it to him for like 35 or something crazy. Kid had the same haircut as the lead singer of The Cure and would cruise down the hallways like reciting his poetry and shit. Fucking nuts man.
He was actually kind of cool, though, if you talked to him one on one but when he was around a bunch of people he didnt really know what to do. Theres your lack of social skills. Wouldnt be telling the truth if I said I wasnt hard on him sometimes, but like I said, get him by himself and he had some interesting things to say.

I started when I was 17, somewhat regular at 18. My grades did not change in highschool. My memory is unchanged, I only forget things on a short basis only while I am high. I'm teaching myself a language (among other things) and I don't feel cannabis has hindered my learning at all. As long as you have focus and you don't waste away your hours doing nothing at all like playing video games or watching tv, getting high is fun and can actually help improve your memory, at least in some aspects. But that's just me.

If u gotta smoke when u are young, im gonna say keep it to once or twice a month. THC does not leave your body after a week of abstinence, it takes 1-3months when you smoke anything more then occasionally.

Ive never been a daily smoker, i started to smoke weekends when i was 23 about 4 years back. And even doing that i noticed a change in myself, my mind, and my motivation, my learning and cogntive ability - espically my ability to focus my mind. Added to that the way the drug started fucking with me when i was sobar, playing on my fears (not regaining my ability to focus etc), paranioa etc that you would NOT understand when you are young, let alone deal with in a rational manner. At 10-18(even 21!!) years old, you have no baseline to gauge yourself with, you are too young and your hormones are fucking with your brain all the while!

How can u guys say for certain that you only long term effects are memory loss? How can u say for certain you behaviour has not been effected when you started smoking so young? Those first years of smoking would of been a mad haze and you hadnt even developed the ability to use half your brain!

TBH, im glad i didnt (even though i love smoking so much now). I sure as hell wouldnt have been earning 90k+ on my first job outside of getting my degree. Owned my dream car and a apartment at 22, not a cent from the folks.

I think when u are young you pickup soooo many habbits thats follow you into adulthood and define your life. These habits are not easy to shake at all. Whether it be jerking off every night, or eating a certain type of pizza, or going to the gym. These habits can have no effects on your conciousness at all, but they become part of the makeup of your subconcious. You introduce smoking into that, espically for a reason like relaxing after school, or passing time in class, you are engraining that behaviour into your mind and its going to be alot of effort to rid yourself of when you are older. I know how to relax and deal with breakups and money issues without weed, cause i learnt all that shit on my way to becomming a man.

Another common thing lots of my friends now see me blazing and i pass it over and they refuse politely. They then tell me storys about how they smoked weed in there teens for a long time and what issues it has caused them and why they cant ever enjoy it anymore.. That shit makes me sad, cause i see myself enjoying the effects of pot for quite a while more, and these guys cant even touch it anymore! (they all loved it for the same reasons i do).

That said, some parts of the way weed changes you are good. Lots of good changes, like expanding your coniousness, your aweness, you ability to empathise etc etc Im just highlight the bad in this post as a warning.

The last thing i wanna say is that i am impressed that you are doing research into the subject. I have a feeling you are already experiencing some of the side-effects of consistant weed use and i really hope you can continue to enjoy your life with weed for many years to come. But i think you understand that the weed honeymoon can end in many different ways, and if u really beleive its a good and positive thing then you will treat it with respect. If you dont beleive what i say, i will give you a challenge. Take a month off smoking. Make a diary about what you feel. Then start smoking again. Really analyse yourself. Im a scientific kind of person, and i dont beleive what people say usually until i experience it or asses the evidence for myself.

All of that was IMO!! :)

^1) good explanation man .

2) why couldn't your friends smoke again? I've heard about this with adults who used to smoke dope simply can't anymore without experiencing things such as paranoia , etc.
I always wonder why this is :-S

And thanks guys for all the replies .
Keep em coming .

I'm not so sure smoking cannabis causes long term memory loss. I mean, from the variety of posts in this thread so far, it's quite clear that the health affects of smoking in the long term is highly unclear. For that reason, OP, you should examine how it effects your social life, your grades, and anything else that is important to you and make a determination from that.

I wouldn't say that I have many of the habits I did when I was a teenager that's for sure. And my interests are certainly not the same. I personally think that college years are more of a determination as to what your habits are.

No matter how hard you try, your memory of these years will be shotty at best no matter what drugs your taking or if you are taking any at all. Don't expect to remember everything you did or even what all your friends' names are! Just make sure you make some memories that will stick. As for memory in general, I have been smoking for almost 10 years and I think my memory is great. Granted, all those years I was not a daily smoker. That started later in college.

I'm too lazy to read all the posts said in this thread, but I read the OP!

I've seen you going for quite a while now james, I have been on and off this forum for a while now.

I am also 17 (in your french canadian neighboor province :D) and I have been smoking 4 days a week during all this year, and now i'm smoking a bowl every night when I come back from an exhausting day of work.

During the school year, it definetly had an impact on me, but take in consideration everybody is different. I had no motivation to study for my final exams (i didn't study but still passed :p) and weed brang (bring, yea haha) serious depression thoughts into my life.

I don't think it really has any bad effects on your health, execpt for ofc lungs and throats "problems" (smoking anything is bad for you). But I also think that weed becoming an habit is quite dangerous because you will start smoking more and more, and there, for some people, problems occur.

If you smoke 3-4 bowls a day, I consider you not doing really anything of your day (it would be the case for me, i would sit on the computer and watching movies all day) so you gotta be carefull to stay active!

I don't know if i've said it all, but you just have to listen to your body and how you feel. If you feel you are going into a downspiral, emotionnaly and with your weed habit, try to slow down. It's really an unique situation for everybody because it depends how weed affects you! (both with positive effects and negative ones).

I was going to stop smoking weed with the summer that came, but finally I felt like if I kind of needed it still, I wasn't done with this "phase" if I can express myself this way, but I found out my body and my mind didn't need me to stop, so I keep on going blazing :D

Take care bro!
