The summer months are a time for rest and relaxation. For some teens though, they can also be a time for risk taking and substance abuse.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) just released a report that expressed a concern about the patterns of substance use among adolescents aged 12 to 17.

Teens are more likely to get involved with substance abuse in the summer months when out of school.

Pamela S. Hyde, SAMHSA administrator said, “More free time and less adult supervision can make the summertime an exciting time for many young people, but it can also increase the likelihood of exposure to the dangers of substance abuse.”

“That is why it is critically important to take every opportunity we can throughout the year to talk to our young people about the real risks of substance abuse and effective measures for avoiding it, so they will be informed and capable of making the right decisions on their own.”

The SAMHSA report stated that the first time most teens used an illicit substance was in June or July. On any given day around 5,000 to 8,000 teens take their first drink of alcohol. In June and July the number jumps to over 11,000.

On any given day around 3,000 to 4,000 teens smoke their first cigarette. In June and July that number jumps to over 5,000.

Marijuana use is no different. While most days 3,000 to 4,000 kids smoke pot for the first time, in June or July the number increased to over 4,800.

These same summertime spikes were found with the use of hallucinogens and inhalants.

Notably, cocaine and non-medical prescription stimulants and tranquilizers did not show an increase in first-time use in June and July.

No shit Sherlock, kids are obviously gonna try more drugs, alcohol etc during the summer when they are on break from school and have all that spare time every day, they are gonna find some way to pass the time.

Guess what? Teachers use their substances a lot more in the summer also. Alcohol is most prevalent. Some teachers teach summer school half in the bag because, what the hell, it's just summer school. I've heard this with my own ears and seen it with my own eyes. Teachers I worked with traditionally got hammered that last day of school. The kids don't come on the last day. Teachers clean their rooms, turn in grades, etc. Then they party like rock stars.

I'm not knocking it. Teachers are SO glad school is over every year that the last day for them is like getting out of jail. Teaching is hard work. Teachers might be good during the year but I've seen sweet little teachers at the bar together at night after the school is locked up, partying heavily, raising hell, strippin their tops off...

education is to blame. not kids, not teachers. education as an institution makes everyone nuts. If you are a teacher and you are reading this thinking "I'm not nuts" think about your colleagues. I bet you know more than one crazy person and I bet you know some that are just hiding it really well.

I think your comment applies to a lot of stuff being reported as news. It isn't news if it isn't new.

May i ask why? Spending time with family maybe? All your hook ups were at school? Just curious because that seems ass backwards lol. Glad to see your still around Captian=D

My family is a big giant buzz kill waiting to happen. All of the people, teachers, even the one cop in my high school, were not a buzz kill compared to my family.

Considering the sheer number of people in both categories, it may be mind blowing to some. ;)

There is more to that, but it's not worth going into here.

Pretty much this.

Next article "People use more drugs when they're alive"

^After that article is: "PEOPLE USE DRUGS!!!" I had to check the date to see if this was recent news or if someone necro'd some old ass study from like the 60s. I started my substance use during the winter (cold as fuck outside, dark all the time, why spend thousands on a geographical vacation when I can take a "mental vacation" for like twenty bucks a day). I agree with you CH, couldn't stand being around my family on anything other than weed (it's acceptable being stoned in my family). Most of my introductions to substances (I'd say about 80% ) was during late November/early December.

Public schools shouldn't have a summer break anymore to begin with. The precedent for the break was set two hundred years ago when students needed time off in the summer to help their families on the farm. This is no longer an issue.

One of the reasons American students are such shit compared to the rest of the developed world is because we attempt to teach them math and science and then give them two months off to forget it all before coming back to school. There have been studies done about this and in the majority of cases a year round school schedule correlates to higher test scores in science and math.

IIRC, seems like I have more want to use drugs in the winter because I believe I have seasonal depression. There is also less stuff to do in the winter it seems. I'm more likely to be cooped up inside though as far as weather, its hard to find motivation to stay outside in the summer unless it involves water.

Kind of the opposite here. I've rarely if ever done durgz in Winter. I also believe I have seasonal depression, but I'm not sure, maybe it's just me being a whiny bitch.

I dislike drug use when I'm depressed, which is probably for the best anyway.

I bet you'll tell me that most murders are committed by people without agoraphobia.
