Teen who used to consume five energy drinks a day warns of their health risks

A BRITISH teenager who used to drink up to five energy drinks a day and now has ongoing health issues has warned others against consuming the beverages.
Dion Parratt, 18, says her former addiction has left her with a serious heart condition and resulted in two miscarriages.

Last week she shared an image on Facebook of herself wearing a heart monitor, which she has to wear all the time so doctors can monitor her condition.

“This is what happens when you spend your childhood drinking energy drinks,” Dion wrote on Facebook.

“I’m now stuck with wires and a massive box attached to me for 24 hours. Before you drink ... cheap energy drinks think about what your doing to your body and to anyone who is a parent don’t let your kids drink them they should be banned.”
Dion says she has consumed the drinks since she started high school. She stopped eating food to try and lose weight and so she used the drinks as an energy boost.

“I was young and foolish and thought if I stop eating I will lose weight.
“It worked but now I don’t like food and hurt my body,” she wrote.

“It wasn’t until I lost the second baby that they found a problem with my heart.
“Honestly go get checked you don’t wanna die young.”

Dion’s mother Debby Frost said it was “heartbreaking” to see her daughter go through this.
“It’s really not nice watching your 18-year-old daughter go through this,” she commented on Dion’s Facebook post.
“Passing out when her heart rate drops so low, and then having this machine strapped to her. Heartbreaking.

“If you only stop one of the people that have read and shared this post from drinking these killer drinks, that’s one less person/family that have to go through what you are. One proud mum here.’
IN 2014, the World Health Organisation released a study warning consumers about the dangers of energy drinks, particularly when combined with alcohol.

The paper said the primary risk was from the high caffeine levels in the drinks which can cause problems such as heart palpitations, hypertension, vomiting, convulsions and in extreme cases heart failure leading to death.

I used to drink a shitload of energy drinks to get through work everyday and I did notice some strange heart problems whenever I drank 3 or more monster drinks. Some days i would drink 6 16 oz cans over about 9-10hrs and I would notice what felt like my heart skipping beats, sometes of get very light headed(not in a good way), but they did keep me going hard. I still drink 1-2 when I gotta work but I stopped going over that amount cause I really got scared a few times. I don't scare easily so that's really saying something. Anyways I just wanted to add my experience to thread. Pole driver always posts some interesting shit, thx pole!

If they are regular sized redbulls then she was consuming 80*5=400mg of caffeing/day. Same as 2 large coffees a day.

If they were the rockstars cans then she is at 1K mark in caffeine, fairly high in 24 hours. So what is the heart condition?

How does she know that her heart problem is the result of consuming 5 energy drinks? Plenty of people consume equivalent or close to equivalent amounts of caffeine via coffee and/or energy drinks and don't experience any problems other than the jitters. Also, I fucking hate it when someone says "x should be banned because I, and certain other people like me, have absolutely no self-control and therefore all of you out there with self-control should be penalized because of my actions"

"These killer drinks" lmfao I once drank 6 monsters in 2 and a half hours(2 of them were only 8 oz. but they were the concentrated double strength so still same amount of caffeine, taurine, b vitamins etc. as the regular)just to pass a drug test. Don't know why I metioned that, just made me think of it, lol.

Anyway, energy drinks and other caffeinated beverages could contribute to heart problems when used in high amounts consistenly, especially in individuals susceptible to heart problems(usually unknown to them), but as Burnt Offerings pointed out, this girl doesn't even know if the drinks are to blame. Also, it sounds like she was also anorexic to some degree, which is known to be bad on the heart. Imo it's kind of common sense that you shouldn't drink that much caffeine every day, especially while you're still developing, but there's people who do it for years and are fine.

Completely agree with Burnt Offerings. This is bullshit. One person falls off a bike and breaks their something = bikes should be banned? Give me a fucking break. Besides, she says herself that she stopped eating properly, and an improper diet can have dire consequences on health.

Also, 2 miscarriages by the age 18? Damn gurl.

this girl was starving herself. that is plus abusing energy drinks is probably the cause of her problems...if this is a legit story often the aussie media prints bullshit.

So caffeine causes miscarriages now? Absolute bullshit. And many people have taken doses of caffeine far in excess of a gram within a single day without ending up with any sort of heart disease. Somehow, I suspect that energy drinks were not the only thing she'd taken.

This article is garbage and the young lady is confused. I would say her eating issues are the main culprit here. I don't think drinking a bunch of energy drinks in order to stop eating is an addiction. Mother sounds as with it as the kid. 8(
