On Monday, 18-year-old Jose Manuel Torres Perez flew into South Florida with big bags of candy. But federal investigators said they weren't Halloween leftovers — they were a way for Torres to smuggle 21 pounds of cocaine, reports the Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale.

Torres, of Puerto Rico, is charged with importing 5 kilograms or more of cocaine into the United States. If convicted, he could serve from 10 years to life in prison, federal officials said.

According to a criminal complaint, Torres arrived at 2:30 p.m. on an Avianca Airlines flight from Bogotá, Colombia, to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Inside his luggage, a Customs and Border Protection officer found five paper shopping bags of clothes and bags of candy. The bottoms of the bags were abnormally thick, the complaint said, so they were sliced open. Inside was a white powder that tested positive for cocaine.

that kid was a chode for
a.) trying to bring coke in straight from columbia
b.) not hiding it better than just putting it in bags in your luggage
c.) all of the above

^ What a smart law, that puts people in prison for their entire lives because they possess a substance that changes people's consciousness...

... which should be our fundamental freedom.

I couldn't agree with any statement more! Our body's, our decision! (Hopefully its obvious that I'm not agreeing with the sarcastic statement you made, but am talking about the freedoms part)

And you are also right, although he was 18 and probably very inexperienced he still should have thought twice and considered all the things you've pointed out above.

It sucks that he's going down for a long time at such a young age, for a completely harmless mistake. Unfortunately, drug laws in this country are serious shit and you need to be on your toes at all times to ensure your own safety and well-being. This kid honestly should have known better, but at the same time I feel deeply sorry for him-- I doubt he considered the full scope of his actions before beforehand.

I agree with everything so far, bar the idea that it's a completely harmless mistake. Cocaine is hardly a harmless drug. Even if it were legal and perfectly pure it'd still pose substantial risk to users, and is capable of producing horrific addictions.

It shouldn't be illegal, but you can't pretend that drug use and abuse is not without its dangers to the both the user and society. The societal risks are usually downplayed here, but they're just as real. Society picks up the tag when crack addicts can't raise their children.

What a smart trafficker.
could have been quite a successful businessman, or CIA-mail-man
I think it wasn't really his idea to bring drugs with him. Probably had some debts and was pressured to do it or smth.
i love how illegalizing it in the first place creates the environment where crime pays, and then when people with less money are forced into crime, all the blame falls on them

he should have shipped it to himself

remember kids

The postman is your best mule.

Customs Officer: "Do you have anything to declare?"
Clever Trafficker: "Just 5,000 gummy bears sir."

American prison will be like a holiday camp to this guy so it's a win win situation either way.

God Bless the Law (sigh) Some 18 year old kid (a mule) from Colombia is trying to escape poverty and instead is sentenced to life in prison? It's a fucking joke. I mean, seriously - Are the people arresting the kid thinking it's good for him to be sent to life to pound me up the ass prison just because he had to escape poverty in Colombia? Fuckers...

An 18 year old with 21lbs of coke is probably not doing this on a whim by himself. I actually feel bad for him depending on the situation that we don't know.

The kid isn't Colombian, the article says he's Puerto Rican

either way, it's sad that he's going to potentially have a long stay in prison at a young age for committing a "crime" with no victims. Say what you will about addiction and drug abuse, but no one is forcing people to use, it's a decision they made on their own

We know all about the crack head mothers & there are alot more torn families because of "legalized" alcohol than all other drugs combined. People can state that drugs are bad for society & yes, they do have their down fall just like anything else.
