A teenager has died and another is clinging to life following suspected drug reactions at a dance party at Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday night.

A 19-year-old man collapsed on the dance floor at the rave event, A State of Trance, and was treated by medical staff before being taken to Westmead Hospital where he died.

A further five people were taken to hospital including a 20-year-old Arncliffe man, who remains on life support in a critical but stable condition.

One of the men in hospital, a 22-year-old, approached medical staff and allegedly told them he had taken a large number of ecstasy pills, police said in a statement.

Three people were arrested for drug supply at the event and a further 40 people were issued with criminal infringement notices for drug possession and other offences.

Drug dogs searched about 180 people and 23 patrons were treated by medical staff.

More than 16,000 people attended A State of Trance, which ran from 10pm to 6am in three exhibition halls at the Sydney Showground with a headline set from Dutch trance DJ Armin van Buuren.

The festival has attracted controversy in the past with three festival attendees, aged 18 to 26, dying after attending Jakarta's A State of Trance festival last year.

And one person died during an A State of Trance event that was part of the Future Music Festival Asia event in Malaysia last year.

South Western Metropolitan Regional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Frank Mennilli, said police made no secret of the fact that a high-visibility drug operation would be in force during Saturday's event.

"Despite efforts by police and the event organisers to ensure people could attend this music event and enjoy themselves without their lives being put in danger, one man has died and another remains in Westmead Hospital in a critical condition," he said.

He vowed to continue using drug dogs at high-risk music events.

More than 100 pills were allegedly found on three people charged with drug supply.

A 20-year-old Auburn man allegedly tried to run from police and was later found to have 100 tablets, believed to be MDMA, and cash on him, police said.

A 21-year-old Victorian was charged after police said they found 15 tablets, believed to be MDMA.

A 20-year-old Greenacre man was also charged with supplying more than an indictable quantity of drugs.

Police said post-mortem and toxicology testing would be carried out on the 19-year-old man and information would be forwarded to the coroner.

The death comes less than four months after Longueville teenager Georgina Bartter died from an adverse reaction to ecstasy at the Harbourlife dance festival.

Sad they still can't get informative reporting going on this sort of thing. Obviously the vast majority of people were high and safe. Telling people what the last person did wrong to come to harm would be a good first step. That would take an honest coroner's report, which should be a matter of public record if it's going to be used for media scaremongering. Meanwhile, in the same period, how many people died in alcohol-related violence and accidents?

How do you think it would be reported if 2 spectators died while watching the football in a month? I wouldn't say it was scaremongering. Something has to change in the consumers side of the equation I'm afraid.

Jesus Christ, that is the dumbest thing Ive ever heard. I agree with the cop, there are no words to describe their stupidity.

So they bring in more cops and more dogs because?...

The couple hundred pills they snatched however affected any body rolling there or finding drugs, yeah right let's be honest.

This just makes it even more sketchy guaranteed you see less deaths at shows if you regulate mdma sales and provide some real information on the ingestion of ecstacy(mdma/mdxx compounds) Like some safety tips or testing sites.

If you really cared about any of these people the goal wouldn't be to imprison attendees from the get go.

It will be several weeks until the result of the double blind experiment are released and a further month until the article is peer reviewed.

"Police are getting ready to boost their presence at two upcoming dance festivals, including Future Music and Soundwave."

Fucking fantastic. Thanks, dipshits.

I love the music, but absolutely hate the scene. Too many morons ruining it for the rest of us.

I go to have a great time with my friends and dance my arse off - not to watch people fucking overdose. It scares the shit out of me. I don't like seeing people abuse drugs to the point of ridiculous and drop to the floor, flailing around like retarded seals. It's sickening, and is a huge buzzkill. If you want to kill yourself, do it at home so I don't I have to watch please.

I went to the Melbourne ASOT, and had a great time. Always a few silly junkies taking it too far which wasn't nice to see, but overall, most seemed pretty good. I heard some bad things about the Sydney crowd though, and it really is depressing to have your night ruined by self-destructive and irresponsible fools.

Pull your heads in. Control yourselves. If you can't, then either get some help, or just stay the fuck home.

I stand by the assessment that most raver kids are retarded.
and i listen to nothing but jungle and drum and bass.

Party-goers at a Sydney dance festival where a teenager died of an overdose played a dangerous game to see who could take the most pills, police believe.

If this is indeed true, I can't help but wonder what exactly compelled them to take part in such reckless stupidity.

MDMA is not like Cannabis people. Take 'too much' and it can kill you. And based on my own experience, it's an especially painful way to go.
