Techno Lovers Part 2

Yo Yo/Sir Jon: You lucky Europeans. Let me tell you this...
In all of Aus, Melbourne would have to be where it is happening for Techno and dance. Sydney also has the goods, but it is more house oriented (or so I've been told).
Sir Jon: You say 20 pounds (AUS$48) is a lot for a party - and yes, it is. But Internationals have to travel a LONG way to get here. We don't get them very often, and they are often signed-up to play for only ONE crew. They don't have the freedom to do as they want here. Party organisers here are very greedy - all most of them care about is $$$.
Yo Yo: You LUCKY bastard! Umek TWICE? Hawtin 3 TIMES??? BILLY NASTY?!?!? FUCK! We DREAM of seeing acts like that as often as that! THOMAS KROME? WHAT THE FUCK?!?!? We NEVER get to see that many class Techno acts in a few months, let alone 3 years!
Europe is where its happening in Techno. Not here. We see the same DJ's ALL the time. (Jeff Mills is one name that springs to mind...)
So don't expect too much Techno over here. Sure, the parties rock. I've heard from a few sources that the atmosphere at our parties is second to none. But music-wise? There's a lot to be desired...
Dan
Yo Yo: What's your opinion of Billy Nasty? My friend saw him at The End in London when he was over there and said he was awesome...

-expensive farKKKK ..!!~!~!!..
-thats the only reason i cant go england holiday its so fucking expensive.
-but records are like a bit cheaper there so if i was there man would i stock up

Decimal Dan :: `Tis true, there is a very healthy tchno scene in Ireland, but this has only really come good in the last couple of years and is mainly centred around Dublin. I sure have managed to see a lot of class acts, but iw meant a lot of travelling for me, hell though it was well worth it
smile.gif

As for Billy Nasty. Very overrated as far as I`m concerned, puts very little effort in, consistantly playing the same set, the Paul Oakenfold of techno. He played in Dublin the night before Paddy`s Day with Joel Mull and Umek and they blew him away (esp Umek). He was in my house at a party about a year back, and came across as a total wanker.
I`ll tell ya a funny story about Hawtin though, the last time after he had finished playing what I can only describe as the best set I have ever heard, he was standing on the stage chatting with some of us and signing autographs when this guy comes up with a big lump of meat for him to sign
smile.gif
He freaked, and started pissing himself laughing.
Glad to hear Jeff Mills plays over there a good bit though, he seems to have some boycott of The UK and Ireland ongoing.
You say Melbourne is the best place for techno? That`s good news, `cause that`s the first place I`ll be (on Oct 30th). Maybe I`ll catch up with ya there.
smile.gif

I hope life is good
Yo Yo

Ooo that's not good... Billy Nasty sounds like Will-E-Tell! Well as far as the way he plays at least... Will has been playing the same set for the last few years it would seem.. anyway, don't wanna get that arguement started again... In Will-E's defence (so Wet Musik doesn't crack it
wink.gif
), he doesn't seem like a bad guy, I remember a few people I knew had a chat to him a couple of times in a couple of clubs.
I sure hope you're wrong about Nasty, but I guess we'll see for ourselves if he ever comes out here
------------------
If you're skating on thin ice, then you might as well dance...

Yo Yo: Shit, I hope you saw Nasty on his bad nights! I've heard lots of good things about him. But I guess you never know until you hear it for yourself.
JOEL MULL! As I said before, YOU LUCKY BASTARD!
smile.gif

Have you ever seen Marco Carola, Gaetano Parisio or Adam Beyer? These guys rate my highest at the moment, and I'm hanging out for them to tour again. One of the reasons I like Marco is that he seems to have fun while he plays. And when Gaetano played here last, he was taking photos with his camera while he was mixing. Gee, I dunno, I think its coz they're Italian
wink.gif

Carola and Parisio are fucking masters on 3 decks. If you get the chance, check them out, you won't be disappointed

It's good to see some intelligent Techno discussion around here

P.S - Yoyo: Opinion of Dave Angel?

Dan the techno scene in England isn't the largest scene by far. It seemed to me from this discussion board that a lot of Aussies are in to techno and that you seem to get a lot of names in. Mills has boycotted the UK 'cause he had problems with his visas a year ago and says the immigration a racist. Fukcin Supastar DJ has gone to his head.
I know of 5 or 6 large clubs that deal with techno, but because nothings ever too far in the UK its quite easy from where i am to travel to one city 60 miles away to see DJ's.
Dave Angel has gone quite tech-housey the last couple of times i've seen him. Really good as well which I wasn't expecting.
Whats everyones view on Westbam - I think his sets verge on the edge of Eurohardcore not one of the better Djs but he did play at a house party my mate did
wink.gif

I wasn't saying Aus was expensive just the price of little fellas

hmm
-i would of thought england would be up there in the techno scene
-although australia is fucking steaming up fast as everyone can see, i think soon australia will be one of biggest techno valleys worldwide hopefully
-its a good sign when internationals come here and after they play they say i would love to back here, and that they luv playing here coz of the crowd/atmosphere, jeff mills said on an interview i read after hardware 16 i think it was that australia is one of the strongest places he has eva played and said the atmosphere is amazing
BRING KAY D SMITH AND ANDREAS KRAMER DOWN!!
ye ye
smile.gif

Yeah you can get techno easily as our country is small.
But when you compare it to the house scene and their DJs the techno scene is tiny. The house seen is everywhere spurred on by Ibiza. But even the teenybopper albums now are becoming more dancey.
Here are the Techno Dj's I've seen in the last three years (trying to make you jealous)
Jeff Mills (x2), Dave Clarke (x3) Fumiya Tanaka (x2), Darren Emmerson, Richie Hawtin, Cox, Trevor Rockliffe, Adam Beyer (x3), Surgeon (x6), Ruskin (x2) Sven Vath (x4), Westbam (x2), Luke Slater (x2), Planetry Assault Systems (Slater Live), DJ Hyperactive (any info on this guy would be appreciated), Bolland (x4), Ben Sims (x2), Oliver Ho, Dave Angel (x2), Justin Robertson (x3) Andy Weatherall (x2) Aphex Twin, Laurent Garnier. Fookin hell i've seen loads. Class

Dammit Sir Jon, you're one lucky prick!
You've succeeded in making me jealous for one, I'm sure there'll be others...
How was Aphex twin? And 6 times seeing Surgeon? So can we expect a good show next week?

Ok you've got me jealous now. I think I'll just pack my bags and jump on the next plane to the U.K

Tarsarlan: He's not called "Sir Jon" for nothing
smile.gif

Sir Jon: Arsehole!
wink.gif

Last time Dave Angel played here he played a Tech set. And it was a banging tech set at that!
But I love Dave. He rocks! And he always gets the crowd interaction thing happening - I love it. Last time he played he got the crowd clapping along with him. He da man
smile.gif

So, bring on Ruskin and Surgeon. Pity Will-E-Smell will put me in bad mood before-hand... (Nudge Tarsarlan)
wink.gif

Sir Jon/Yo Yo: I posted a quick message about this in another thread, but have you guys heard of/been to "The End" in London?
My sister and her fiance went there when they were living in London a couple of years ago and they STILL don't shut up about it.
It's run by Mr. C yeah? He came out here and played a few months back. He was quite fucking handy as well. Even found time to do some MC'ing while he DJ'ed. His sound was, well, underground I guess. But still Tech. Before he started he said, "This is the sound of Underground London"
If it was, fuck, I like it! Bring it on!
Babble ends here...
Dan

Decimal Dan - speaking of italians, have you heard of Rino Cerrone? (damn fine techno producer)
Also, are there any fans of the advent???
Nah, dont worry about Smelly on Sat night! Nothing can ruin this!!! i hope
wink.gif

Dan I saw the other thread, not been to the End though. London club scene does not appeal to me, a bit pretentious.
The name Sir Jon isn't me being big headed. Say it faster... Sir Jon, Sirjon, Surgeon.
As for Saturday I'm jealous as fuck. Ruskin and Surgeon in a warehouse. I reckon Ruskin will warm up for Surgeon (Ruskin plays a lot of Mills back catalogue). Then Surgeon will fucking rip, is it a good sound system 'cause he pushes the bass to the limit.
First time I saw him he came on after the resident and the night was plodding along (only slighty buzzin). Now you'd expect when a new Dj comes on he will mix in to the last song and bring it up/down to his style after a few records. Surgeon wacked the crossfader over and dropped some f*cking nails tune. Seriously the dance floor just stopped and looked at each other, serious madness. I can't explain.

DD: I read the "nicknames" thread, I know why he called himself Sir Jon... Oh look, he explained it again just incase you missed it! ;P
I was pumped for Pure Flow b4, but now I just can't friggin' contain myself (or maybe that's the 600ml of Fanta)
BRING IT ON!!!!
------------------
If you're skating on thin ice, then you might as well dance...

Decimal Dan :: Dave Angel....Rather nice methinks, although the last time I saw him was two years ago.
Re The End, I`ve never been unfortunately, although it`s the one place in London I`d really like to get to. They released a CD a while back called Subterrain 100% unreleased featuring previously unreleased tracks by Charles Webster, Derrick Carter, Layo&Bushwacka, Mr C, Dave Angel, Terry Francis, Stacy Pullen amoungst others. It really sums up the vibe of subterrain @ The End, real quality tech-house, I`ll bring ya over a copy when I come to your fine city.
The techno scene over here is much like anywhere else, in so far is it isn`t overly popular (too many people like their cheese!!) but the promoters and homeboy DJ`s really do give a fuck, hence the massive amount of top notch nights on.

Sarge: The Advent? BRING 'EM ON! Saw them (him) live at The Palace in June. Fucking great! Although my Mitsi was too much for me, so ended up sitting out the last 30mins
frown.gif

Sir Jon: London scene pretentious? Shit. I can't say anything from experience coz I've never been anywhere (I'm planning to in a few years) but my sister loved it there. She said everyone was just out to have fun - and plenty of fun they had. She hates it here... Go figure...
Yo Yo: Yeah I think you're right about the Techno scene as a whole - it doesn't have the biggest following. But you guys are closer to the action, so the DJ's/producers don't have to travel as far. And it also seems that Techno gurus over there aren't as pretentious as they are here - they seem more down-to-earth. Everyone here just looks after their own...
We should organise a meetup when you guys are in town. We'll show you some Melbourne Techno. My friend and I mix it up at the moment, still trying to get our foot in the door. It's very hard... But there is one Live Techno act here which you can't miss - The DEA. Hopefully you guys can time it so that they play a gig when you are here. Otherwise I'll see if I can convince them to put on a personal show
smile.gif

Better do some work now...
Dan

Decimal Dan :: A meet up sounds mighty fine to me, I`m arriving in Melbourne on Oct 30th and I`ll be there for at least 3 months (if not more) so that leaves plenty of time for
an auld get together.
As for the folks being less pretentious over here, usually thats the case, foreign DJ`s seem to get caught up in the whole thing, 2 weeks ago Felix Da Housecat was playing, and BEFORE he played he was down on the dancefloor grooving and chatting to anyone who was up for it. Sound!!
On a slightly different note, I remember reading on Laurent Garnier`s website (http://www.laurentgarnier.com ) that he`s gonna be touring Australia in late November/ early December. Nice!!!
