My main two questions are should the flame be touching the glass, and should I wait for most of the vapour to form or start slowly inhaling when I see some vapour? My DMT is a light yellowy brown if that makes any difference, I've heard this means there are some impurities that may result in the DMT "running away" from the flame.

The best way is probably to load up a small bit to test with. Start out holding the flame several inches under the pipe and slowly bring it closer until you find the right spot. The glass is acting as a buffer of sorts so you can get it right on the pipe as the dmt isn't going to start vaporizing until the glass heats up. Start inhaling when the vapor starts to form.
A better solution to the meth-pipe method is to use a device many call "the machine", which is basically a glass bottle and metal mesh modified into an oversized crackpipe.

Weigh up your dose, use a folded piece of paper to pour into the pipe, light lighter and move slowly closer to the pipe until it liquefies, smoke it all in one breath. Forget about the impurities unless you know some chemistry. There isn't much more advice to offer except:

Its an art ... the best way i've seen is to use one of those "oil burner" pipes (they don't sell "meth pipes" at head shops, wink wink nod nod).
Weigh out your dose, make sure its broken up, not in big chunks... get a torch lighter , a flame lighter will make the pipe sooty and cause temperature problems... Drop it in there, and get the powder to one side. Use the torch lighter to heat up the area BESIDES the spice, and when it starts to melt and run, turn the pipe a bit, causing the oil to go over the hot spot, instantly vaporizing everything. If you start getting too big of a hit you can again turn the pipe so the oil isn't on the hot spot.
Start with small amounts and work your way up. Have fun and be nice to the elves.
I hear the cool kids blow their own pipes using a plumbing torch and test tubes they bought at the dollar store filled with incense. BOOYAHKASHA!

has anyone tried to smoke it off foil?? since i smoked tar for years i pretty much smoke everything on foil now and it works way better for me. crack, meth, whatever.

ive smoked both main DMT analogues mixed with "mull mix" in a bong. This was the first few extractions i did, ending up with goo before i perfected the process. Have never used foil. I actually prefer synthetic DMT made in a lab, it is much more pure and you know exactly what you are getting.
And when i used to smoke meth on foil it fucking ran everywhere, i got sick of chasing it around tbh
