This is caused by the chemical geosmin produced by bacteria in soil. It’s also why some freshwater fish taste muddy.
It is actually a real chemical (early on was hypothesized to cause schizophrenia, doesn’t) but unlikely to be psychoactive, and certainly not what Thompson or the QAnon kooks say it does.
