if it is really just to start, then superior has some inexpensive kits. if his experience is anything like my husband's, that can take him through until he is really starting to understand the benefits of machine strength, power, needle groupings, what he wants in a shader, liner, etc...
Mike (the husband) uses pulse machines and a few others now, but the benefit of the superior kit is that it comes with a power source and some needles & tubes, so he can get started.
The fake skin, btw, is worthless. It is really, truly, only useful if he wants to touch the machine to something, he might as well use a melon, or ask a butcher for a pig leg, or all the other stuff people do that is useful for being curious, but doesn't mimic the depth or pressure required for tattooing a person. Mike practiced on himself, and then a good friend, and then me...
also, i really don't want this to come off as pretentious, because we had to learn also, but he really shouldn't call it a gun (if he does), artists are pretty particular about it being a machine....for what it's worth...
good luck!
