just popping my head up for some info....
don't know if there are any bluelighters in tassie but since i am going to be travelling around there shortly i was wondering if anyone could confirm or deny the fact that according to governement stats the state is one of the worlds leading (licensed) opium producers.
If so.....feel free to email me at [email protected] if you ahve any particularly useful information ;)
thank you

um hello. didnt even know you were still around! good see you are tho. yes, tasmaia produces something like a third of the worlds opium. i'll do some digging around and find you all sorts of factoids if you like.
i know lots of people from there and have heard some funny stories. a mateb of mines dad was an ambo ther, and apparently there are quite a few roads where you are just not allowed to stop at all, no way no how, as these roads go past the plantations. apparently one night he was called to help with someone givng birth in a car on one of these roads, and certains cops wanted them to "move along" even tho the baby was well on its way.

My parents just been to tasmania for a holiday and i can give you confirmation that there a feilds and feilds of opium poppy plantations down there. So there is confirmation and ill jono dig up some facts for ya.

Yes there are opium fields a plenty in tassie, in most areas of the state. Be warned as previous posters allude to security is tight, around harvest time (summer) the main focus of the tas police drug squad is survaillence of the fields. However thats doesnt stop thousands (66,013 in 98/99 see http://www.justice.tas.gov.au/legpol/annual_report_9899/other.htm) of poppy heads being 'removed' every year.....not that im suggesting you where thinking of that :-)

Yeh its true, I knew a guy who owned a poppy farm down there. But security is really tight, its hard even for the owners to go near the stuff, workers are checked thoroughly. Apparently they can/will shoot at you if you're where you shouldn't be.
And also apparently you don't know which fields have the opiod producing poppies and which ones have dangerous poppies. Personally I've not heard of dangerous poppies but thats what he told me.

Have a friend who worked for Tas Alkaloids (JNJ company). They grew their own poppies and refined them into precursors of various drugs. Most of these were sold to the US to be made into something useful. The US has trade restrictions meaning they can only import a certain amount from us and the rest has to be bought from elsewhere. Tas Alkaloids could produce a lot more than they could sell so they get around these restrictions by coming up with new precursors for export.
Security is not as tight as is could be. A lot of places simply have low barbed wire like a sheep fence and signs saying "keep out", explaining it is illegal to steal or something. There is a bit of competition amongst poppy farmers, probably GM poppies in particular. Some of these larger (5000 +) thefts are thought to be from rivals who have inferior crops. These seem to be taken from out of the way places so they knew where to find them.
Opium really isn't a very safe drug, especially unrefined. A friend of my parents died from chewing it, but I know people who smoke it and seem fine.

thanx for all the info so far..
JB...will pop 'round with your porn...oh sorry :o ...before i leave...i checked out the factoid you posted mid last year which was very useful....ancient bluelighters always search first
so do any of the 5000 plus thefts result in some of the lovely sticky stuff hitting the market?
and thanx for the precautionary tales but i have smoked a little O before...
aaahhhhh 'O'

When the poppies are 'removed'...they are either boiled as a tea, or some ppl refine down to opium tar for smoking or just eating. There really isnt a market for it as such, as the supply isnt consistent.
It is correct that security is not foolproof..ie you usually cant expect to pull over jump the fence in the middle of the day and grap some poppies. However AFOAF in tassie who luved his poppies so he used to scope out fields for any surviallence, park car at night on a road away from the field and walk to the field...the only risky part was driving home with the back seat full of bags poppies...what im saying is minimal planning is required to reduce the risk.
I have also heard that GM poppies contain other alkaliods that make consumption more dangerous...also locals in tas have died ODing on poppies.

I was under the impression that unless you want to make tea the pods still have to be attached to the stem??What i thought people did(not the pharm company's)was make tiny incisions on the pod, come back the next day and scrape the opium off?
Obviously theres a bit more to it but thats the gist of what i thought. So am i completely wrong?
Anyways,goodluck in Tassie
;)

tranquilo: i've also smoked a bit but not for a while. I'm really not sure what's out there now as I mainly came across it in my pot (acid, shroom) days. People I know now who are into opiates prefer 'done or smack and opium probably wouldn't do it for them.

The trouble is no market is really going to open up because, as sanpedro said there isn't consistent supply, but also the medical companies pay as well if not better than an underground market would.
Any opium someone sells you is could be likely to be shitty grade heroin, unless your in Tasmania of course.

i used to live in tasmania and i can tell u that there are shitloads of poppy fields,i heard they produce as much as 2/3 of world's! but that prob backward tasmanians trying to sound important for a change.there are way way more in the north of the state than south, around hobart there arent many at all. Up north near devonport there are small towns there that prob have some within abouta half hour drive. u just gotta drive around for a while and u should find some. I had never heard of the security everyone is talkin about, but i guess it would be there,. But if u a lil careful, and not to greedy! u should be able to do ok i think.

Yeah a friend that used to live in Tas says that there are alot of poppy fields in Tasmania. He said that the farmers can shoot on sight too. He flogged some once and said it wasn't easy. Sold it to buy some green heroin (weed strain) and beam ;)

Yeah having jsut moved over from tassie ( now in melbourne ) i can also confirm fields and fields of the stuff, low barbed fence with little yellow signs saying keep out. ive also heard that you can be shot if you enter the fireld, but IU sure cant remeber it hapopening, and im sure i would have heard about it if it had happened i was there for 14 years.
I would think parking the car jumpingout with a few friends and nabbing as much as you can in 15 minutes would be pretty easy .. alot of the raods they are on are pretty desserted.
any way have fun in tassie, i still say its a good place for a quick visit....

on the north west coast there are many expansive poppy fields. i've never seen a security guard, let alone anyone with guns.
there will often be a sign on the fences facing the road saying "No unauthorised taking the poppies!" or some shite.
seriously, growing up there we'd run up, over and around the poppy fields on the way to the river for swimming.
go, however to the processing plant, and security is tight. you are directed by loudspeaker to follow the yellow line to the admin office. do not deviate from the yellow line etc...
but if you want to go down there and interfeer with the poppies, please go fuck yourself as if there is too much tampering the UN will pull Tasmania's licence to grow them and it will become even more economically shite than it is now.
