Targeted adverts

In fairness nobody is forcing you to use the internet. I've never owned a smart phone in my life, mostly for this reason.

My phone is deliberately dumb as fuck.

I might be being heavily persuaded to use the Internet. I should at least be given a rocket launcher/tank to even up the odds a bit.
 
Not adverts but still Google and their suspiciously accurate apparent knowledge of things they shouldn't really know, what I've been wondering about of late is PooToob. Have noticed that when I'm playing music from my own collection (ie just stored on an external HD and played through desktop music player thingy) and go to PooToob to find a linky to post up in the Tunes Thread or whatever that almost unerringly the top recommendation (name that tune in one, two, three as you type it in stylee) is the very thing I'm looking for. Wouldn't be so odd if it weren't for the fact they can often be pretty frikkin obscure - certainly obscure enough to make it unlikely to just happen to be top recommendation on such little supplied info anyway. I don't have any Google accounts (so no PooToob account) so shouldn't really be based on previous selections and patterns. Obviously they'll have one of those longterm cookies keeping track of stuff but that wouldn't explain stuff I've never searched for coming up spot on so often. Could swear they're pulling it straight off my music player. Really quite uncanny if they're not - they're software isn't just good it's clairvoyant.

Yes I'm sure it's my own dumb fault Ali, I think the point I'm trying to ask is how are they doing it?

I can get my own rocket launcher, don't you go worrying about me now. Just stick to the general privacy point, the one that has no scope for you going 'na na na na na'. Do you think google are using picassa for their wonderfully non-evil non-intrusive coz it's your own fault anyway....erm, own nefarious purposes?

It's mindboggling how much everything is intertwined.

You can delete all your held data from there, and alter permissions for future capturing of data at the same time.

It'll have any of google+, playstore relationships to any devices youve ever logged into get apps from ... theres fucktons of shit. All your gmail contacts, lists of chat logs .. the works

Keep it as clear possible and with as few permssions as possible.

Also, if youre using google to search instead of Duck, like Allein mentioned, then log out of your google (gmail) account first ... because those searches will be linked to your email.

I was just checking out my Google dashboard the other day and i discovered that all my location data was recorded on there. I could go to a date on my calendar and the location history would show me roughly where i was and at what time on that particular day. I had no idea that info was being recorded at all

There is an option on Chrome for Incognito browsing but i've yet to use it so not sure how useful it may be
 
Really why should I care? Everytime I use an ATM or drive my car over a toll bridge they know where I am. If it means I no longer have to watch tampon ads on my TV, I'm all for having my data mined.

Tell me that tickets to my favourite band go on presale tomorrow, let me know that my favourite beer is on sale at my local, if I'm going on holiday to a new city, by all means tell me about some cool local bars and attractions. Unless you are so weak of mind that the simple power of suggestion over rides your every move, just enjoy perks of tailored advertising.
 
1) I went somewhere for a month once where there was zero advertising. It was bliss. I really don't need to be told to buy shit. I can accept you need more of a their-hands-on-you approach though.

2) What if I get cialis ads with my home made porn as background on cricinfo? I've got family and shit.
 
Just because you are told doesn't mean you need to buy it. Like it or not advertising dollars are what pays your sporting events and often funds public works like art galleries and bike paths.

Only the weak willed need to worry. Those of us who have free will and are intelligent enough to make an informed decision can use googles background research for our own benefit.

Insurance companies are a completely different kettle of fish. Once again though, you can always weigh up not buying insurance. After all it is just a subtle form of gambling.
