tar and power heroin difference

Can anybody explain the difference between tar and powered heroin. Is it processed differently? I always thought tar isn't as good and it is really acetylated opium which would have morphine in it to convert to heroin.

Does anyone know the difference in the way they process it and does anyone know why tar is mostly in the west and powder is in the east?
 
The difference between powder and tar is in the manufacturing.
You see more tar on the west coast because the heroin usually is shipped up from Mexico, where the heroin is made almost exclusively as black tar.
Purity can vary for each but one thing to note is that tar heroin may also contain 6-MAM during its manufacturing process (one of the active metabolites of heroin) and therefore may be more potent than powder.
Also, some brown powder can be turned into black tar by adding moisture or breathing on it.

And morphine doesn't convert to heroin. Heroin is a prodrug, whcih converts to morphine, 6-MAM, and other active metabolites in the body

I know morphine doesn't convert to heroin, but the process of making heroin does convert morphine into heroin.

I misread what you typed. And both types of heroin come from purifying opium to morphine, then acetylating the morphine.. I think tar heroin is just a less refined product of morphine and that's what gives it the darker color and texture.

I found this while searching online. It might give some insight into your question.

'Pure heroin is a white powder with a bitter taste and little odor, but street heroin comes in many different forms, depending on how it was made and what's been added to it. Street heroin can be white, tan, brown, gray, or black.

It can be a fine, fluffy powder, course like sand, chunky, or a solid mass that is either gummy or rock hard (Black Tar Heroin). It can smell like vinegar, vitamins, or medicine—or have no smell at all.No matter what color or form, all heroin is either heroin salt or heroin base.

White powder and black tar heroin are usually heroin salt, and brown heroin is usually heroin base.
Despite all of the different appearances heroin can have, what's really important is how you can take it.

White Powder refers to heroin “salt,” mostly snorted or injected (aka China White, Number 4),

Brown Base refers to heroin “base” (aka Persian, Brown Sugar, Pakistani) that can be smoked but needs to be heated in a solution of water and mild acid to inject and

Tar is the black, sticky, gum-like substance (aka Chiva,Mexican Tar or Black Tar Heroin), mostly smoked or injected.

The heroin you buy on the street, no matter what form, almost always has other stuff in it. Some of these substances are chemicals that come from opium or from the way they make heroin.Others are cuts added to make the dope go farther or change its effect.The cut can change the taste, smell or
high, making it harder to know what you have.

Mexican drug syndicates were producing heroin by the mid-1960s. Lacking the experience in chemistry that other syndicates had gained through years of illicit heroin production, Mexican organizations used less-refined morphine and also substituted primary chemicals in synthesis.The opium from which heroin is ultimately produced is a golden brown-to-black, gummy latex containing an average of 10% morphine, although morphine content can vary from 3 to 20 percent of content. Pure morphine and heroin are both fine white and odorless powders. In order to produce heroin, morphine is extracted from raw opium and reacted with non-glacial acetic acid, primarily acetic anhydride for its efficiency. The purity of the final product, and therefore its color and texture, depend on the purity of the source material. Early black tar heroin was notable for its low purity (usually under 30%, at a time when white powdered heroin from the east coast often tested at over 90% ), but purity levels have increased dramatically as the producers have gained experience. Accordingly, the price per kilogram of black tar heroin has increased from one-tenth that of South American powder heroin in the mid-1990s to between one-half and three-quarters in 2003.

The effects of black tar heroin are identical to those of powder heroin. Because of the consistency of black tar heroin, it is usually injected or smoked. It can also be ground into powder or dissolved in water and snorted.

Mexican brown powder heroin is actually #4 heroin without the addition of activated carbon and the final step of ether and ethyl alcohol used by most #4 producers. As it is often produced by the same syndicates producing Tar, they are considered for practical purposes to be a closely related product. In reality however, they are two different classes of heroin.

Black Tar Heroin is Acetylated Opium

When I was in Oregon, I did not have access to my own GC/MS to confirm my suspicions about black tar heroin as I do today. The problem is that (and let's use this as a reference point not a dogmatic absolute) west of the Mississippi River, black tar predominates, and east of the Mississippi River, either brown, Southwest Asian (Afghanistan and The Golden Crescent), rock-like heroin, or Southeast Asian (Burma-OK fucking Myanmar-and the Golden Triangle,) white heroin predominates [Note that Thailand has paved over most of its poppy fields and is no longer a big player; however, Columbia has, for the past 12-15 years, increased its production and export to the US, of very high quality, white heroin as well.] The vast majority of the world's illicit heroin, at least through 2008, came from Afghanistan. All legal opium imported into the US must, de jure, come from India, but poppy straw extracts from Tasmania and other places do circumvent this law (enacted in the first non tax based drug law, The Opium Importation Act of 1925. (The Harrison Act of 1914 was merely a tax stamp act and the only people who did any time from violation were physicians. Not until 1925 did the street user start going to jail in significant numbers.)

But I digress. Every time I have done a GC/MS on black tar heroin, it has always turned out to be acetylated opium, probably from Mexico, but not necessarily so. Heroin from Afghanistan, while usually in the 60 % range when going to the high level dealers, tends to have 40% combined noscapine and papaverine in it. I do not know why everyone else in the world seems to be able to remove these impurities from heroin except the Islamic suppliers since, they are both simple to remove and are both highly water soluble, taking a single additional step. The problem with these compounds is that they inhibit the speed of uptake of heroin into the brain, and if any of you have read anything I've written before about euphoria, it is not the simple agonist action on a specific opioid receptor that causes euphoria (upstream at the VTA; let's not get into the Nuc Acc right now): it is how quickly something gets into the brain, as well as (and as importantly), the speed of the on-off phenomenon as the receptors go from not being stimulated much, to being stimulated, suddenly and close to one single initial bolus of many opioid receptors at one time. [Methadone is not euphoric orally because it takes so long to reach peak plasma concentrations (Cmax) because it gets absorbed molecule by molecule, mostly in the small intestine. But when injected, methadone is almost as euphoric as heroin.] The DEA even states in the CSA Schedules that noscapine and papaverine, when added to certain opiates, reduce the abuse potential and often make a CIII drug into a CV drug.

But my experiments suggest that black tar heroin is not, as you might have heard on the news 98% heroin (as pure heroin is crystal white and very pretty I might add), but rather acetylated opium. Although I have not done a large enough sample size to say this is always the case.
