Tanzania: No to Sex Workers, Please!

IT has been reported in the press that the so-called commercial sex workers, sex minorities and narcotic drug addicts in this nation of upright people complain that they are not treated like human beings.

They say they are discriminated, stigmatized and scoffed at. They also complain that there is a high level of gender abuse among commercial sex workers (prostitutes), perpetrated by their customers. What customers are they alluding to? By patronizing the services of prostitutes these customers commit a misdemeanor.

It is some of these miscreants who also complain that they have limited access to social services because they are stigmatized. It is outrageous that these social outlaws should demand any favours. In fact, it is common knowledge that these villains spread HIV/ Aids.

It has been determined that prostitutes and other sexual morons such as gay men, have already been hit really hard by the onslaught of HIV/Aids. More than 30 per cent of prostitutes, for example, live with the Aids virus. And, apparently, all of them know it.

So, some transmit the virus intentionally -- in the name of money. In this case it is outrageous that these social outlaws should demand any societal favours. Any person who intentionally transmits HIV to another person commits a punishable offence. Upon conviction, such culprit is liable to life imprisonment in conformity with the requirements of the HIV and AIDS Prevention Control Act (2007).

It is imperative to point out here that commercial sex work is a punishable crime in this country. Equally punishable is loitering for the purpose of prostitution, a crime that attracts a three-month jail term on the Mainland. Providing sex in exchange for money carries a stiffer penalty in Zanzibar where offenders are imprisoned for three years.

Under-age prostitutes, perhaps, suffer the most in this rabid, criminal underworld. The girls are often open to all sorts of abuse. Ruthless men often walk out on the naïve children after a 'service' without paying the agreed fee. They use abusive and intimidating language on the girls to evade paying. Sometimes, they even beat up the girls. Apparently, the children are in the wrong profession.

They should be rescued. Older women, many of whom hide sharp knives in their skirts, are not abused with impunity. But even here, there are isolated cases of victimization. Since it is not easy for a prostitute to take her case to the police, some men abuse them with impunity.

Consumers of narcotic drugs risk going behind bars for ten years or paying monetary fines of up to a million shillings each or both. In Zanzibar, the offence carries a jail term spanning seven years. Prostitutes and drug addicts shame the nation. They should be tamed.

Calling prostitutes and gay men "sexual morons" is absurdly offensive as well as ridiculously simplistic and plain wrong. Perhaps more prostitutes would feel able to leave the profession if others in the community didn't stigmatise them so badly. They are people too and shouldn't be viewed as less human for their choices, the author should realise that it is attitudes like theirs that lead to people thinking it is okay to abuse prostitutes and treat them like scum.
