Opioids taking Temgesic daily, would 5 mg oxycodone work for breakthrough pain?

Hi!

I am taking 2 tabs Temgesic (bupe) 400mcg 3 times / day for chronic pain. For breakthrough pain I take 60 mg codeine, or 50-100 mg tramadol, and both the codeine and tramadol works for the pain, a bit strange.

However, I am out of codeine and tram, but have a box of leftover 5 mg OxyContins stashed away. Would it be safe to take a 5 mg Oxy, chewed or crushed up, while on Temgesic? From what I understand, 5mg oxy equals about 60mg's codeine.

Thanks for your help!

Are you sure it is OxyContin? That is the brand name of Purdue Pharma's extended release versions and I don't believe they make less than 10mg versions of them. Anyway I believe if you felt the codeine then you should feel the oxy as well. Your doses of bupe are small enough to not create a blocking dose. Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for that info. Yeah, that was what I figured, that the bupe doses are to small to antagonize the other opioid. But my main concern is if it's safe to take the oxy while on Temgesic? Even if 5 mg equals 60 mgs of codeine roughly, oxy is a much stronger opioid. I don't think it is dangerous though. Or what do you think?

I'm sure. It is European 5mg OxyContin, pack of 28 made by Mundipharma. They are from 2009 though, maybe they have stopped making them now. They are bright blue, almost fluorescent.
