Taking Oxycodone while pregnant...

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right area, but I have been doing research and heard mixed things about taking oxycodone, or other types of painkillers, while pregnant..

I AM NOT PREGNANT...

but..


I go to pain management and have been on opiates for years.. and this has been one concern of mine (If I should plan to become pregnant.. or if it's unplanned) Would I still be able to take my prescribed dosage while pregnant??

Is it safe??

Oxycodone will cross the placenta and the baby will feel the effects as well. Regular usage will result in the baby being born addicted. I'm not sure of the possible increased risk of miscarriage, development issues, low birth weight, etc. that narcotic use might cause, but it definitely isn't a good thing to be taking. I would imagine that if you are always in serious pain that requires narcotic treatment and set on having a baby then there are things doctors will try and do to minimize the chance of complications, but it will still be a higher risk pregnancy than most.

I also know that APAP is regularly prescribed and aspirin is avoided (unless perhaps its blood thinning properties are required).

I think this will do better in Healthy Living than Other Drugs so I'm going to send it over there.

my dealer was/is on methadone while she was pregnant. a friend and i were totally shocked by this. we looked into it and there was nothing illegal (ie endangering a child). all that we could find on the subject was that (obviously) it would be born physically dependent.

i would also like to add the baby was born fine (but a lil CRANKY hehehe).

and, one more thing: BALLLLLINNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!

I just wanted to share my experience. I was on methadone for 3 1/2 years before switching to suboxone. About 2 years of being on methadone and living a normal life not using anyvdrugs accept some pot I became pregnant with my now 3 1/2 year old completely healthy happy amazing son.

Most women can taper offbof methadone if they chose to do so but only in their second trimester. It's the safest time to do it. That is if you have no other health issuesvthat make you high risk of losing the baby. I was high risk do to having had cervical cancer a couple years prior. So I was advised by the mmt doctor, gyno and pediatrician to not go off of the methadone bc my risk of losing my child while tapering during the second trimester was increased due to having a weakened cervix from the surgery I had. I stayed on my 65mg dose my entire pregnancy.

During my second trimester I was put on full bed rest. I had some bleeding one day but everything else about my pregnancy was perfectly normal. The babys growth, my weight, babys weight, fluid, etc. Everything normal.

Here's where the story gets good! I was due august 1st. Well my son decided he wanted to make his appearance much sooner than that! The morning of June 25th I went for my weekly check up at the gyno. Everything was normal. Later that day the baby droped. (which is normal) and my legs and feet swelled bc of the position he was in. I was resting with my feet up for the rest of the day. Well around 10pm I felt a full on contraction!! (funny thing I went to a 5 hour lamas class the day before) so I called my doc and said I'm having contractions and told me to go to the er right away bc my contractions were literally 1 min apart! Well my mom couldn't drive bc she was in a car accident the day before(not her fault she was hit) and had taken pain meeds and was too 'high' to drive. (she doesn't ever take narcotics). So I was waiting for my fiancé to come get me. Well during that time my water broke and therecwas only seconds between contractions. My mom called 911 for an ambulance. By that time I was crowning! The paramedics arrived and shortly after my fiancé arrived.

Long story short(I know it's already long. Lol) I gave birth to my son on my living room floor!!!! The paramedics delivered him at 1137pm. Yes from first contraction to delivery was one hour and thirty seven minutes!

Apperently it's common for women not to feel pre labor pains while on methadone. He was a healthy baby boy! 5 lbs 11 oz. The only problem he had was air around his lungs which luckily went away on it's own.

Now the pediatritions I had spoke to prior to giving birth about him being born on methadone said he would be in the hospital anywhere from 4-8 weeks detoxing. We spent 3 weeks their. The first 5 days in the nicu bc of his lungs and being premature and the other 2 weeks detoxing. He had little to no symptoms and the docs and nurses all said this was the fastest they have ever seen a baby detox. I never leftbhis side. I was with him every moment while he was in the hospital. The docs said that is why he did so well. They also told me most mothers who have babys their detoxing use it as a vacation and don't spend much time with their baby. How could I leave that precious baby boy? I couldn't! He was my baby and he needed me!!!! And I was there!

I just wanted to share my story. I hope no one judges me for having a baby on methadone. Unfortunatly i didn't have a choice. He's an amazing smart talented normal heathy 3 year old. I just hope and pray he doesn't end up and addict like me. But with the right parenting and healthy relationship I think and know he will be just fine!

Oxycodone is pregnancy category C meaning it has potential to harm to the fetus but a medical need may warrant its use during pregnancy. During pregnancy a Dr. will look at every med to see if it can reasonably be lowered or discontinued until delivery.

I'd bring up with a pain clinic Dr or nurse that you are considering conceiving at some point and you would like to know what meds might be altered before conception and through different phases of pregnancy.

I would just like to put my two cents in on the question about taking pain killers while being pregnant.
I myself am on pain management because my spine is disintegrating so I know what it feels like to be in chronic pain 24/7 I also know about the fears of taking prescribed narcotic pain medications while being pregnant and have talked with both my primary health care provider and my ob/gyn and as long as you are under their care while on the pain medications then you should have nothing to worry about yes people say your baby could key word COULD be born addicted to the opiates and go through withdrawals but there has not been any reports on if there are any birth defects they have tested animal's and humans and the problem why it is still a class c medication for pregnant women is because there isn't many women that will take the risk of testing pain medication while being pregnant so I think for you women that are pregnant and are taking narcotic pain medication with your doctor's prescribing it to you under their care should let your doctor's know that you would like them to make your case public to share with the FDA your babies and your outcome and the results of what happened in your pregnancies while undergoing pain management so the FDA has a better class for narcotics during pregnancy I myself am letting my doctors give the results of my case to the FDA to help out women like you guys so that they have answers so their not scared to have a child just because you have chronic pain it does not mean you cannothave a baby just like the doctor's all say don't let your chronic pain stand in the way of you living a normal life and for all of you heaters out there who are thinking while reading all of these post that you people are crazy you have chronic so bad you have to take narcotic pain medication what why the hell would you or could you even get pregnant how are you going to raise a baby with your chronic pain while being on narcotics for all of you people that are thinking that first and foremost please don't even reply to this post or any other post for that matter if you don't have anything nice to say second go to hell and third off only god can judge so anyways thank you and I hope this helps some or all of you. DON'T BE SCARED THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO THAT'S THE MOST HARMFUL THING FOR YOUR UNBORN CHILD IS TO QUIT TAKING YOUR PAIN MEDICATION IT CAN CAUSE YOU TO LOSE THE BABY
