taking a greyhound bus

greyhound is great!

every bus is sparkling clean; the seats have plenty of legroom; every bus has a HD overhead large screen TV with the latest flicks; and the staff?!?!?!?!?!? THE FUCKING STAFF?!?!?

the staff=suuper nice, really really really good good people. they'd give you the shirt off your back if you asked for I tell ya. Awesome human beings. Period

I love Fung Wah and Lucky Star. How can you go wrong for the price?! I think it might be up to $15 one way between Boston and NYC. Some city pairs have cheaper rates and some have more expensive, but they're all mostly in that range.

Oh boy you can go wrong. You can go very very wrong.

They lease out buses from other bus companies. Some of those buses are in total disrepair and some are pretty nice.

They seem to not feel the need to put lights or ventilation in the bathrooms which is pretty bad (having to use the bathroom and/or find a vein in total darkness. Not fun.)

i've rode the ghettohound once before from orlando to miami my experience was great it was me and this girl we were going down to miami to sell 500 beans, well we ended up eating about a few beans about a hour before we hit miami and boy was we rolling our asses off by the time we stepped out of that bus.

All my greyhound experiences were all right...

They're pretty awesome if you got some peeps to talk to, otherwise it's pretty shitty lol.

i've taken greyhounds a few times
usually some crazy stranger sits next to me and tells me their life story, or, i accidentally sit next to someone who smells.

my advice: get a car

lol, but really, greyhound isn't all that bad
most of my experiences have been fine

God knows how I ended up in here but it amuses me reading about just how bad travelling on a bus in the states can be.

From the UK myself and no one would ever have any issue about getting on a bus to travel round the country. They're all clean, safe and not at all dangerous. The idea that a coach journey could be as bad as people are describing here is bizzare to me. :D

I bussed from Dallas to Chicago.

Was pretty ok, I slept for like 15 of the 18 hour ride.

I used to ride the greyhound from Orlando to Miami alot...about 2 weeks ago I had a 2 day trip on the greyhound from New Mexico to Florida. That trip sucked, it all depends on how long you can sit still for. When I used to go from Miami to Orlando I used to sit in the back row and be constantly going in and out of the bathroom to smoke rock lol. But if your low on cash they are a good way to get where you need to go. Bring music or something to entertain you...a pillow to sleep works too :)

i'm from texas, which is important to know for my answer.

when i rode greyhound (from dallas to austin) i was the only person who spoke (only) english on the bus. the bus driver would only announce things in spanish and all the movies were in spanish. wasn't actually that bad, per se, but having to have people translate for me sucked.

now Amtrak. yeah, that sucked. five minutes of motion and one hour of waiting. rinse, wash and repeat.

Riding the greyho is just like going to a festie, you get the good, bad, and fugly. I've never had a bad time and have met a bunch of good folk on the dc boston nyc runs. For that corridor Amtrak is FAR better.

twas years ago a little freaky but fun. . I had a window seat. there was a baby on board. . it was a little annoying but we stopped at some random places I gambled a little won so I gave the recite to a fellow passenger and he cashed it for me. non the less it was a weird experience. . but I think I would do it again with a camera!

I rode greyho from texas to oregon, damn that shit was funny! The only thing I ended up losing was of all things my hobo tool (spoon, knife, fork, canopener combo) I was more worried about all my other shit, they skipped jacking my laptop for the damned knife:) The ride was rough, we broke down in nevada/arizona at night in the fucking desert. Got to see where they filmed seven and terminator 2 (the part where arnold appears naked in buttfuck egypt) Seeing cali for the first time was the shit, so many duncan donuts and 711's (haven't seen either stores since my childhood) This mexican guy saw how worn out I was (was up for 3 days on the trip, sleepin every now and then) He offered me a screwdriver (was nice cuz I was sober for what felt like forever, had just got out of probation) Taking that tip set me free from alot of things, mainly drugs I used to be able to afford and buy on a whim. I barely even smoke pot or drink anymore (and I'm not even 23 yet!) Los angeles was cool, but I nevr left the bus station cuz I was a scared lil white boy from the suburbs afraid to get jacked. When the bus stopped in oregon I was in salem, got attacked by a crackhead at 2am and got in a car wreck on black ice over a pass. Since then things have been fine but ever since then I've been dealing with anxiety. Would I do it again? hell yes, but dunno wher I would go, socal maybe?

Me and my ex rode Greyhound from Florida to Maine when we were 18 for Christmas. Long and boring, more of a hassle than anything else i suppose. I wouldn't suggest it.

Granted you can meet some pretty cool people, but other than that FUCK Greyhound.

My last time on a Greyhound it was from Truth or Consequences, NM to Wilmington, NC. It was supposed to be a 4 day trip. It was the week of July 4th. We made it from TorC to Albuquerque no problems. At alb, there was a 2 hour layover, so I went and smoked a joint with this random dude I met at the station.

Then everything went to shit. The layovers snowballed the farther along into my trip I got, and by the time I made it to Savannah, GA I had a 22 hour layover. Ended up spending 8 days on the bus/in the bus station. Never again.

If you're going boston>nyc>philly>dc, check out Bolt Bus. I think they're owned by Greyhound but the busses are new, there's a tad bit more legroom and they have wifi and electric plugs. Definitely makes a long bus trip more enjoyable.
