so i have pretty painful abdo pain right now - gp prescribed co-codamol 30/500 , wasnt working, so gave me tramadol - not working. So tonight ive taken 400mg tramadol and 8x 30/500 cocodamol, still in pain. too risky to take more ? or back to gp tmro ? low tolerance to pain killers. cant take nsaids - stomach ulcers !

I have ulcer, too. While Trams can aid with withdrawal symptoms and make you mentally feel good, they are hell on your stomach. If I hit the 150mg mark, my stomach jerks, makes noises for hours, and causes pain. It's the same for morphine, it's havoc on my tum.

Try taking OTC Nexium, or AR med about an hour before your doses.

Feel better xox

I'd would suggest going back to your GP and seeing what other pain relief is available. Did you take 8 co-codamol in one go? That isn't good if you did, as it's not so much the codeine in it, but the amount of paracetamol you are ingesting, it can wreck havoc with your liver and cause severe damage. I think you need to find out the cause of your abdominal pain and treat the cause as well as reducing the amount of pain. Also, the painkillers could be adding to the irritation in your stomach, adding more pain. I'd personally ask your GP about a PPI, like lansoprazole or omeprazole, as these work extremely well.

Yes i did take 8 in one go - along with 400mg Tramadol. im already on lanzoprazole for upper GI problems. The pain is being investigated, ultrasound is bookedfor end of week and blood results due back tomorrow - its lower left abdo pain. pain is ridiculous. probably wasnt the best idea taking that many pills - had a floaty spaced feeling all night. but it did help with the pain. I used to be addicted to co-codamol, taking as many as 10 30/500 in one go - several times a day. is it possible ive built up a tolerence ? and could effects on my liver be more apparent in time, or is it something that shows up pretty much straight away ? thanku.

I'm glad you're currently undergoing tests and blood work, hopefully these will show some thing and they can get it sorted for you. I'm wondering if maybe you've got gallstones. They should show up on an ultrasound if you do. The thing is with co-codamol is the codeine for tolerance rather than the paracetamol. However, it depends on how long ago you were taking the high dose of co-codamol as tolerance can build up rapidly and can tolerance can go down just as quickly.

In regard to the paracetamol, it can take a while for apparent liver damage to show up. That's why many people who take co-codamol do a cold water extraction to take the paracetamol out and just take the codeine as the risk with liver damage from constant high use of paracetamol is extremely high.

Either use the co-codamol responsibily or ask the doctor for straight codeine phosphate without paracetamol.

thanks for your advice ...wont be gallbladder as had that removed in 2012 after a nasty bout of pancreatitis. Also not appendix or spleen as both have previously ruptured and been removed. i will visit the doc and ask about just codeine - no idea how to do cwe, ive researched but still tricky.
