tackling the big issues....Ethical consumption - do you give a damn?

Great topic!

I for one don't support companies that i know do harm to other people and/or the planet. I'm sure there are things that i still buy that i shouldn't but what i'm aware of i don't purchase.

It really shits me that people don't care about anyone but themselves and don't look at the big picture :X

As a mother i care about the future of this planet because i have a child and i don't want his grandkids to be playing in a wasteland and want to teach him to be a humanitarian.

At 10 years old he even sees how stupid it is to like something because other people like them (trends and brand names etc) and he was appauled when i told him Nike and other such corporations made mothers work all day for little or no pay and don't get to see their children for months (if at all) just so they get fed.

If a 10 year old can see that and half the world can't their is something wrong! (or i'm doing something right anyway)

I do give care regarding ethical consumption upon a planet and I love Nike.

CHAPTER 1
A Storey about the African SPREENGBOK.
I was going to write in this thread I had previously thought, and today seems to be the day. I was mainly instigated to write here because I was and am supportive of Nike in my signature and in the "living without justification" thread, it seems some chaps may have had some apparent negative scenarios of me being a supporter for Nike, and so I gently wrote(copy in teal green below)[ a peaceful rebuttal to their "problems" and how they may want to process/deal with them. I knew that there had been maybe an anti NIKE campaign going on in this thread and I redirected them back here as well. I come to disclaim unofficiallly or otherwise on behalf of Nike, the illusions purported against this company that I hallow with great esteem.

I believe in a healthy planet. We are one with this planet Gaia. I see good human health as an obvious part of this planet's health, happiness and wellbeing. I believe the healthier we as the species 'homo sapiens' are, the healthier this beloved Earth will be. I find diet and exercise to play a major role in a human-being's(and humanity's as a whole) physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and etheric health, happiness and wellbeing. I hav received education in Health Sciences in various fields. I have done lots of keen supplemental reading on health and environmental topicsI am vegan. I am a very keen organic gardener. I take vitamin and mineral supplements. I like exercising( a lot). I love and enjoy swimming, athletics, dancing, aerobics, gymnastics, circus, worthwhile gymnasium activities, life games and other play. I prefer noncompetitive rather than competitive sports though. Physical activities where we are happily working well as a team together towards a rewarding life-enriching & enhancing goal. I have found I need specialist footwear for athletes. Footwear that protects my feet from jarring/shock that ones feet receive as one does one's daily "missions". I have tried many shoes. 90% of the time for at least decade I choose and prepare to wear Nike with rear and forefoot air cushioning. I use Sorbothane inner soles that in themselves claim to absorb 90% of the shock. Since wearing predominantly Nike Air with Sorbothane, I have not had any foot injuries at all for the last ten+ years.
No sprains, no ache, no pain no feeling of jarring or pounding.
(except once when I just had some cheap sports shoes and I started getting sore feet. I couldn't walk properly. I thought O, had I stuffed up my feet somehow!?, anyway I went to a sports;store tried on some Nike rear and forefot air cushioning and miracle of miracles, I could walk again, all pain gone completely! I was heaps delighted!)

NIKE shoes have enabled me to glide like the wind effortlessly accross just about any terrain. These shoes have the traction, the support, the cushioning that has enabled me (along with an excellent diet and other lifestyle measures), to reach blissful levels of wellbeing, happiness, joy and a level of exuberance I did not know even existed (without medEcEnal assistance.)
I had felt a lot of these youthful joyful exuberances as a child because that is the way of childhood, I believe. Even though there may be pain and sorrow in childhood there was the absolutely wonderful shrieks of delight of various things in life; Yet here was in my adulthood achieving an awesome natural high that was more continuous and even, than the peaks and troughs of joy in childhood. i would usually jump out of bed each morning with even more renewed vigour and enthusiasm than the day before. It was all so exciting. Iwas going to raves and people would say "what are you on" and I'd say something like "fruit" or "life" or "Exercise". A lot of the time I could feel people didn't believe me because there I was, a complete pixE, my heart shining starkers with innocence and compassion, love and Empathy/Ecstacy completelE drug frEE!
And I couldn't have done it without the city of nyk.E, the best Empathy around forever by a triillion miles or more. With fellow familie of rEE.bok, asEEcs.adEEdaas somewhere.
:)
I got on very well with everyone from 1 week old to 90 odd years of age.I had purified myself of a lot of density and that's when I realised but actually really RErealised (would be a better term,)
that I was a
* KandE Kid* here on Earth to spread these secret formulaE Nature Cure, Natural Hygiene aka a Diamond FIT FOR LIFE!

And so with the combination of proper health methods, I had/have rebloomed pristine health and retain(ed), regain(ed) as much of my youth as I cho(o)se in any given moment. I KNOW there 2 be a neverending Fountain Of Youth within us all; just there FREE for the drinking from; on just had to to want/desire/intend to partake of this Pure Spring/Well and graciously receive the blessings therefrom.
I know that Pure Innocent KandE Kydness + RAving ARE cosmic and planetarE blueprints.

But then these colleagues may show you who are are, your potential, and what you are capable of; (hence my sig. stating "You already are what you are looking for" ) so then once one has learnt from these manuals on life existence, one may then return and live in the moment;a state of being what Ram Dass called to

Shalom!
Ethics in the single life. Please stay On Topic.
I have unfortunately been slandered in this dear singles thread just of late seemingly for some of my beliefs and now I claim a peaceful rebuttal. I have attempted to keep this succinct.

O:I love & am proud prancing
about (albeit non-pompously) spouting Peace,Love,Unity,Respect whilst blatantly and happily advertising for a brilliant company called NIKE.

I find NIKE to be a coherent team of professional health workers improving this planet spreading the message of brilliant pure sparkling health and happiness through "best practice management", in such areas as, but not limited to; exercise, health & fitness, fashion, style, comfort & design, high level, wisdom-filled, biomechanical engineering, as well as high conscious levels of ethical business management.
Please understand; "Nike products are manufactured in factories owned and operated by other companies. Out-sourcing, as it is commonly called, is pervasive in that industry. Nike’s supply chain includes more than 660,000 contract manufacturing workers in more than 900 factories in more than 50 countries, including the United States. The workers are predominantly women, ages 19-25. The geographic dispersion is driven by many factors including pricing, quality, factory capacity, and quota allocation." -Nike
O: This you must be able to see is a complex situation.
"Our goal is to do business with contract factories that consistently demonstrate compliance with standards we set and that operate in an ethical and lawful manner."-Nike
O:NIKE are paying above award wages and have established a Workers And Factories Code Of Conduct.
"Nike opposes child labor and directs contract factories making Nike branded products to set age standards at 16 for apparel and equipment and 18 for footwear."-Nike
O: Please see
http://www.nike.com/nikebiz/nikebiz.jhtml?page=0
for the inside story from the "horses mouth".

I have plenty more evidence to defend the good morals of NIKE if need be; (that info is just the tip of the iceberg) Perhaps just see me as a staunch advocate & unofficial or otherwise legal & ethical representative and defender of the awesome spirit of natural health and fitness which NIKE exemplifies.
If people are concerned, then please communicate to Nike (directly at: Nike World Headquarters, One Boweman Drive, Beaverton, Oregon, 97005-6453, USA. or via a web feedback form at
http://swoosh.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/swoosh.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php )themselves, instead of hassling me and others & taking threads off topic unnecessarily. There is a thread to discuss, communicate your & other's feelings & ideas regarding various companies and their particular ethics/morals and that is at
http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=186927&perpage=25&pagenumber=5
Please express your emotion in that thread and to NIKE directly if need be to get these matters "off your chest".

"We feel lucky to have a genuine, altruistic reason to be: the service of human potential. That's the great benefit of sports, and we're glad to be in the middle of it."-Nike

Nike's corporate responsibility mission is to be an innovative and inspirational corporate citizen in a world where our company participates. The issues we face as corporate citizens are complex. We, like other companies, face many challenges operating in a global economy, and we will continue to address these challenges and look for ways to make a positive impact on our business and our world. THE NIKE MISSION: "To bring inpiration and innovation to every athlete in the world"

O:And I believe that to be a good thing.

So I gracefully reresume the topic of the thread

I am a sportsboy looking for a sportsgirl.

Peace.

Subnote for this thread ;
Nike is older than you may at first think.
Since 1928, the front side of every medal has featured a picture of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, sitting in a horse-drawn chariot and holding a laurel wreath above her head. It also showed a Roman amphitheatre.
A new design had been created for the 2004 Games, featuring the Greek Panathenic Stadium (where the modern Olympics were revived in 1896) and a new image of Nike. Based on a statue carved in 421 BC which was kept in the Temple of Zeus in Olympia, the new image shows Nike flying into the stadium as if to crown the winners with a wreath.
The main side of the medals has been changed for the first time since the Amsterdam Olympic Games in 1928. The main feature of the medals is the Greek character shown on both sides, which is of particular importance, as from now on all Olympic medals will reflect the Greek character of the Games regarding both their origin and their revival.
ATHENS 2004 aim was to modify the main side of the medals and to include Greek elements in it that would highlight the close connection between Greece and the Olympic Movement. Therefore ATHENS 2004 asked the candidates that took part at the competition to include the goddess “Nike” of Paeonios and the Panathinaikon Stadium in their design.
Goddess Nike was worshipped as the personification of victory in the stadium as well as in the battlefield. According to Greek mythology, Zeus sent her to earth to crown the winners. Historical research has showed that goddess Nike was always represented as “winged”, full of movement and dynamism, descending from heaven either to sing praises for a victory, or to offer libations, or to crown a winner. Moreover, in the Museum of Olympia there is a statue of goddess Nike, three metres in height, created in 421 BC by the well-known sculptor Paeonios. Supported by a nine-metre triangular pedestal situated at the east facade of the Temple of Zeus, she gave the impression that she was descending from heaven.
Since goddess Nike would fly into a stadium to crown the best athlete, at the main side of the medals she is represent in a similar way in the interior of a stadium, and more particularly in the Panathinaikon Stadium where the Olympic Games were revived in 1896.

At Nike, we believe that if you have a body, you are an athlete. But we also believe that first you are a human, an individual with rare talents and singular perspective, diverse from all the rest.

CU because I'm going to have some vitamin E have a slEEEP and then go to the sEa then go RAvEEng!; tip of the iceberg, tip of the iceberg

Something to swallow; The bits we don't like in others are the bits we don't like in our selves, hence we are each-other's mirror. Have you run today? - NIKE SHALOM!

ob: do you have difficulty separating propaganda from actual fact?

just because somebody *says* something doesn't mean that it's true.

i'll say it again
Oceanboy makes me feel uneasy
and i have a fairly strong stomach

Well here's some propaganda of my own:

Fuck Nike.

Open your eyes.

Turn on your bullshit detector.

Hey Ocean Boy... Nike just admitted they have abuse problems in their factories just today.

Nike admits to abuses in its factories
April 16, 2005

New York: Nike, long the target of sweatshop allegations, has produced the most comprehensive picture yet of the 700 factories that produce its footwear and clothing, detailing admissions of abuses, including forced overtime and restricted access to water.

The company has published a 108-page report, available on its website, the first since it paid $US1.5 million ($1.95 million) to settle allegations that it had made false claims about how well its workers were treated.

For years activists have been pressing Nike and other companies to reveal where their factories are in order to allow independent monitoring.

Nike lists 124 plants in China contracted to make its products, 73 in Thailand, 35 in South Korea, 34 in Vietnam and others in Asia. It also produces goods in South America, Australia, Canada, Italy, Mexico, Turkey and the US. It employs 650,000 contract workers worldwide.

The report admits to widespread problems, particularly in Nike's Asian factories.

The company said it audited hundreds of factories in 2003 and 2004 and found cases of "abusive treatment", physical and verbal, in more than a quarter of its south Asian plants.

Between 25 per cent and 50 per cent of the factories in the region restrict access to toilets and drinking water during the working day. The same percentage deny workers at least one day off in seven.

In more than half of Nike's factories, the report said, employees work more than 60 hours a week. In about 25 per cent, workers refusing to do overtime were punished. Wages were also below the legal minimum in about 25 per cent of factories.

Michael Posner, the executive director of Human Rights First, described the report as "an important step forward"

but added: "The facts on the ground suggest there are still enormous problems with these supply chains and factories ... what is Nike doing to change the picture and give workers more rights?"

Well I watched a documentary sometime last year and in it they interviewed the owner of Nike about sweatshop labour. His response was, basically "It's not my responsibility how people treat workers in other countries".

In other words, I know, and I don't fucking care. Whatever makes me richer.

Do I give a damn? Nope.

Should I? Probably.

But I don't. I used to believe and try to change.. now I am simply part of the problem. A mass consumerist, doing an advertising degree and buying whatever shoes look cool regardless of conditions.

I have become the thing I used to hate.

Worst part is that I don't seem to even care.

At all.

Its got nothing to do with the product being sold.. its the marketing that makes all the difference.. We live in a world full of glossy advertisements and billboards that make us want more "stuff". We are merely puppets in a consumer game run by fat, sexually frustrated business executives that dont know us from a bar of soap, but want our money.. because without it they wont be able to afford channel bags and jewellery... What also strikes me as interesting is that these people who are at the forefront of our consumer culture have the temprements of four year olds. Instead of playing in the sand pit, they now play in the boardrooms and offices of multi-story buildings. They are like big bullies who push around smaller weaker individuals, ie sweat shop workers, they use their situation to their advantage. Big companies just lurrrve the 3rd world because if these countries were to develop there would be no more cheap labour and this would be disasterous to their precious profits.... I have been guilty of being a consumer robot in my past and still am in many ways, because its the only way ive known.. I think its the same with most of us. We were simply brought up that way. However once you delve into the facts behind this facade, you will begin to understand what really goes on and the lies that are told in regards to consumer products and advertising.

Those who have given into the consumer world, just couldnt be bothered knowing the truth and finding a better solution. And thats fine if thats you. ;)

It's pretty simple. The more you buy into consumer culture, the more you consume, the less is left for everyone else - both now, and into the future. Now, I don't anticipate the problem will show itself for at least another 20-30 years, but when it does, we (meaning the current 20-39yr olds) will be the older generation! What do you think our children / the next generation are going to think of our sloppy environmental practice when the end to that giant hotel banquet is coming and someone has to pick up the bill?

I can just see it now, future governments use our generations superannuation to repair the environmental damage we've done to the world....what an ironicly fitting tribute that would be. 8)

That NIKE report is heartening news. At least IMC has some good things going for it.

EVEN if you do buy the argument that Nike et al are doing good by creating jobs and infrastructure, and that having a job with terrible working conditions and a tiny wage is better than nothing, it's still simple.

Assuming that no effort from you was required in determining it,
which would you prefer:

A: That workers earn a decent wage and have decent working conditions
B: That workers earn below the poverty level, and aren't even afforded basic human rights.

I would have to assume that the majority of people would prefer A.
I am basing this on the assumption that most people have some amount of human compassion and sympathy for others. If that is not the case so help us all.

The amount of effort required to contribute towards A occurring rather than B is minute.

For Example I just recently bought a pair of shoes:
black-hightop.jpg

NO SWEAT's. Price is comparable to Converse. No sweat shop labour. Basically the same product. Where was the effort in that?

Also, to whoever said that if everyone stopped buying Nike and it went out of business, there'd be no jobs for the sweatshop workers that made the shoes, your argument is weak. People are always going to buy shoes. If Nike went out of business they would just buy them from somebody else. If that somebody else was a company that didn't use sweatshop labour, hey presto! - we have helped eliminate sweatshop labour. Perhaps I am oversimplifying but my basic point holds.

I cant remember the last time I bought a big brand name item of clothing. Nearly all my clothes for the last 3 years I have bought from op shops or independent producers.
