Thanks. I guess I could have used context clues there. Do you mind if I change the title to read "system of a down" instead of SOAD? Also a thread like this can only go so far. Would you like me to change it to a System of a Down Discussion thread that way it generates even more conversation and discussions on favorite songs, albums, members, shows, info on upcoming shows and so on..
 
Yeah I haven't listened to SOAD in years either. aerials, spiders, and dare devil are cool but so were like all their songs lol. First album was the best by far followed by toxicity...didn't like their newer albums too much though and serj tankian solo, no just no... Has anyone seen the concert video where guitarest darren mallakian (sp?) Comes out om stage super loaded and starts rambling nonsense? It was pretty funny, "once again this is a song about nothing!. Fun fact, they all used to speedball hard...

i haven't listened to SOAD in years but saw this thread and decided to put some on. man. they were weird. people kept comparing them to Korn and shit but they aren't like that. it's like when people group Limp Bizkit in with Rage Against the Machine. They were so silly and fun and smart and whatever. I love deer dance. and that one sugar?? that song was awesome too. i'm going to have go through a full re listen soon. oh yeah and DARTS and War?. basically any of the songs off the first two albums. CUBErt.

man they toured in 1998 with Mr. Bungle. that shit would have been off the jam!!!!!!!!
 
Deer dance and darts are fantastic songs. I also decided to listen to SOAD after reading this thread and fell back in love. I used to be a real big system fan when I was younger. The guitarist Daren Malakian is fuckin nuts lol, seriously that man was so fucking drugged out all the time, it's not even funny, actually it kinda is lol. Unlike alot of bands SOAD was great live, here's, IMO, one of their best shows. Just look into daren's eyes, he looks like a bonafide psychopath. Around the 27 minute mark he just walks around with his ass out like nothing.



Also this vid below is great... the song D devil that begins at 2:55 is one of my favorite songs, although there's very few of their classics that I don't like. There's not a song in either of these vids that I don't like. Haha daren's a maniac in this vid though, he starts rolling around the floor and shit, pretty funny. Admittedly serj kinda fucked up the vocals, he does better when the mic is on a stand..

@CaptKratom, their live mixes were horrendous. You either can't hear Daron's mic in some of the performances or his guitar tone just sounds like shit.
Or in the one you posted from Rock am Ring, Serj sounds too quiet.

I would love to hear from the bands members their experiences on tour from back in the Toxicity days and what drugs they did.
You just can't tell from these guys live performances, especially Daron.
One minute he looks like he's cracked up and drunk next minute he looks like he's tripping balls and has no idea what's going on.

I'm damn 90% sure they did whatever drugs they could get their hands on up until 2003 or so, I'd say at that point they straightened themselves out a little but Daron looked like he may have done H for a while too.
2005 he just did not look like himself.

Oh yeah and it's quite blatantly obvious from the studio vids recorded in '98 that they all got too high too often and did psychedelics.

100% disagree, yeah that second vid was diahrea (just posted it cuz I liked the songs) but the great majority of their year 2000 and over live sets were unbelievably good, most songs of their licr songs are just as quality as if it was from a cd. I saw them live a while back, I think it was the weenie roast and they were the best set by far, superb quality. It's when daron gets too fucking loaded 8). Btw, while I'm sure they did cocktails of drugs they definitely used to speedball the most. Can't remember where I read it...magazine article? Listen to the song needles, I would assume they'rereferring to opiates when they talk about the tapeworm... SOAD live is fucking quality, no doubt

I heard someone say they read in a german mag article he used to smoke crack before every show or somethin...

I'm not sure what either one of us mean right now regarding the live mixes/sets. Let's not get it too confusing please.
What I meant is that Denver 2000 was one of their best performances ever yet you couldn't hear Daron throughout most of the show.
If you listen to DDevil or Dam from that show you can barely make out what Daron was saying, and he was YELLING into the mic.
BDO 2002 was mixed really well, especially Shavo's bass.

It's a shame they sound so shit now. Daron's Gibson, Serj's voice... no energy on stage at all anymore they're a shadow of their former selves.

And Needles I think is both about addiction and they threw in a little Kurt Cobain into that song too.
