It's a trendy street drug which is cheap, readily available and lethal. And it has dangerous and bizarre side effects including paranoia, agitation, violence and hallucinations. Judy Woodruff talk to Virginia Commonwealth University's Louis de Felice about the uptick in abuse of bath salts as a recreational drug.

Finally, a guy that knows what he's talking about when it comes to dru .. 'The users of bathsalts frequently, for some unknown reason, take their clothes off and tear away at their body parts'. Ah fuck it, I knew it was to good to be true.

Don't know which RC he means by 'cathinone that acts like methamphetamine' though ..

As long as people keep chasin a high, shady companies will find new ways to manufacture shit like this and put it on the market. Research chemicals are dangerous and the risk/reward ratio isnt worth it.

maybe but that doesnt change the fact that they are here and not gowing away anytime soon.

People need to change the record, these same 'side-effects' are boring. Using them for EVERY drug would just make people realise theyre talking shite, even if its true.

...he's talking about masturbation, right? :)

mdpv? could be any number of stimulant RCs. methamphetamine is a nice scary media folk-devil word though.

Sooner or later a popular synthetic will emerge that really does cause horrible, permanent side effects from a small amount of use if people aren't granted access to more safe recreational substances

Doubt there will be any apologies if/when this happens

I expected better from Newhour. That doc has almost no clue what she's talking about, though she might just be dumbing it down for others. IME it's the same all over the medical community. Say spice or bath salts and they're like :?.

MDPV isn't sold in a "legit" liquor/smoke store. They're using something else now, though there might be some MDPV still floating around;). Too bad mephedrone didn't catch on in the US, seems less crazy. Think AM-2201 is the most common in spice, what's used in bath salts now?

^ UR-144 or the fluorinated counterpart seem to be the current hit cannabinoid, and a-PVP is still the MDPV of the moment, but pentedrone, etc make the rounds. Alpha-ppp was big in branded bath salt chems recently too, but didn't catch on as well, as orally and nasally it disappoints. But taken IV it packs a rush that rivals cocaine and short circuits the pleasure reward circuitry something fierce, and left a big wake, ie check out the path of destruction it and a-PVP left in West Virginia for example.

They really need to stop using the term bathsalts for a very wide and diverse group of compounds. They don't even fall in the same classes sometimes.

On a lighter note, in the past 2 years I've heard the term "bathsalts" far more then I thought I would in my whole life.
