Until he tried a marijuana look-alike product called "K2," David Rozga's most dubious decision was getting a Green Bay Packers tattoo on his shoulder.

Then the 18-year-old athlete and band standout got high on the fake pot last June and complained to a friend "that he felt like he was in hell," his father said.

Though he had never suffered from depression, the teenager went home, found a shotgun and killed himself — one of at least nine U.S. deaths in the last year that authorities suspect were caused by synthetic products designed to mimic marijuana, cocaine and other illegal drugs.

An Associated Press analysis shows that the substances are increasingly causing users to fall seriously ill, with some suffering seizures and hallucinations.

Available in many head shops for as little as [no pricing info], the synthetic drugs are often packaged as incense or bath salts, but they do nothing to perfume the air or soften water.

This headline has been scrolling across the bottom of the Today Show for 3 days now...i am so sick of hearing it. these people obviously weren't educated and made rash decisions as a result.

Exactly. This isn't new information, its all over all news sources and Bluelight. Also, I think you should edit the price out of your post.

The sad truth is these drugs will continue to come to market as long as the drugs they're intended to "replace" are illegal. The best we can do is just educate people about the dangers of trying new RCs.

Slimvictor is correct, they still have to be edited out.

looks like he did suffer from depression (it very often goes unnoticed, even when all of the closest relatives swear otherwise) and K2 was his last hope. he tried it without learning about it, fucked up, had a bad experience. last hope was shot, and went to off himself.

statistically, i can see how a particular drug could increase or decrease someone's probability of killing themselves. but to simply blame the drug for a suicide (even if my reasoning/assumption in the first paragraph is totally off) is simply retarded. too many factors are at play, and this is a compound that is not studied well.

too bad any of its medicinal properties will be lost for our medical system once this is banned, and any of its dangers will be unknown until it is un-banned.

I hate RC's, they have some wacked out chemicals in them which make them more dangerous then hardcore illegal drugs, but then again, you can OD & die taking anything.

Yea that's news that needs 3 days of coverage. Wonder what the hell happened that caused him such a horrible reaction.

Headlines like this have been in the media for a decade or better.

Don't pay attention. They call it television "programming" for a reason.

Can I say it? Whatever fucking asshole/'s that started marketing rc's to be sold in head shops or gas stations can lick MY fucking balls! TWO TIMES!!! But that wasn't brought on by this article, I already felt this way. Fuck you asshole! I know you're out there lurking, reading this - fuck you!

Does anyone else find it rather suspicious that the research team lead by John W Huffman, the chemist responsible for synthesizing and publishing these synthetic cannibinoids, was sponsored and funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)?

The National Institute on Drug Abuse is a US federal-government research institute whose mission is to "lead the Nation in bringing the power of science to bear on drug abuse and addiction."

So the feds, the very organization responsible for criminalizing and penalizing marijuana users, are the same people responsible for giving breath to synthetic marijuana. Then they turn around and act sincerely surprised when they "discover" the synthetic RCs being used in herbal supplements. Why is it that they only chose to schedule a select few of these RCs, while leaving other equally potentially active RCs legal?

It sounds to me like a scheme developed by the feds to make more money by taxing this "fake marijuana" while keeping the real stuff illegal. It was only a matter of time before the DEA had to schedule the substance due to the outstandingly negative reaction from the media, and state-wide legislations passed to criminalize the RCs.

And at the same time, John Huffman claims he has hundreds of these cannibinoids, some of which are MUCH more potent than JWH-018 at doses that are note even visible to the naked eye. Has any reputable research given credit to the development of these federally funded chemicals?

I doubt it was some kind of conspiracy to sell these to the public. Ah silly stoners and their imaginations. More likely he was doing research plotting and understanding the CB receptors and their activity proved profitable for someone down the road. Like LSD was created for mind control

^I agree, it was meant for lab study only.

I do blame prohibition, and I also blame the media. In fact, I blame the media for prohibition, at least partially.
