Switching to Wellbutrin: Oh boy...

Okay well a little history: I was taking Celexa for about two months, I don't remember the dosage. Then I was switched to Effexor for about three months. Went from 75mgs to 150mgs. Then I started cutting them in half because I didn't want to get in to deep with them. I did this for like two months. Then last month I was switched to 100mgs of Pristiq (which is basically Effexor). I didn't take 100mgs at all I immediatley cut them into half then the halves into half. So I've been taking like 25 mgs of pristiq for almost a month.

Well, my doctor doesn't know about the cutting pills in half (I know that's not good, its turned into a snowball lie now). Finally he gave up on the SSRI's/SNRI's and switched me to Wellbutrin which I'm sort of optimistic about because I think my depression is dopamine related, but I still would rather be on nothing considereing I think Celexa started all of this. Well my doctor didn't tell me to wean of the Pristiq. He told me to immediatley stop it and take Wellbutrin, 150 mgs. So I took Wellbutrin last night instead of Pristiq but I'm kind of worried. This doesn't sound smart at all lol. Granted I kind of weaned myself off Pristiq I may not have given myself enough time to wean off of it. And the craziet part of it is my doctor thinks I've been taking much higher doeses and STILL didn't even tell me to wean off of it. I don't know if this is stupidity or he just thinks I won't withdraw.

I need some advice. Should I really just stop the Pristiq? I don't want to make my brain go into shock or anything. I've never withdrawn so I'm a little worried. If I have minor withdrawels then that's fine. I jusy don't want it to be major. I know you guys arn't doctors but I don't know if I trust mine anymore haha. So any advice is greatly appreciated :)

Dude I think its really great that you care about yourself enough to know and say that your doctor should know the level of medication you are taking; most people do not understand that this is crucial.

You don't trust your doctor? I would, unless you have reason not to.

You will probably have minor withdrawals, as Wellbutrin and Pristiq work on some different receptors, though they both have affinity for norepinepherine. The only way to know is to find out.

I found SSRI withdrawals to be basically all mental and not that bad while I was taking Wellbutrin.

In my experience Wellbutrin was a super-antidepressant which covered up the negative symptoms of using many other drugs.

i'm on 100 mg of pristiq, 150 mg of lamotrigine, and was on 300 mg of wellbutrin. when i run out of meds, sometimes i stop cold turkey, my brain didn't really go into shock, just had a lot of anxiety. my psych told me not to drink more than 3 glasses of alcohol with wellbutrin, but i'd still drink like crazy, then i had two seizures because of the wellbutrin apparently. just in case you're a drinker..

Well I trust him but I don't know if I should since he didn't tell me to wean off pristiq. It just sounded a little irresponsible to me, but other then that he's been great helping me. I'm on day two and I feel the withdrawel but it's definatley manageable. If its not bad the first two days does that mean I'm scott free? Or is it usually not bad the first couple days but gets worse around day 3 or so?

Ms. Martini: Thanks for the heads up! But I'm not a drinker so it's all good there :)

You'll have to check out the half life if you want to answer that. Usually after five the remaining drug amount is essentially benign and you'll feel peak withdrawal.

Hmm half life is about 20 hours. I'm on day four and all I get is like a shock or wave of anxiety that goes through my body every once in a while. So I shouldn't get excited yet until after day 5?
