clonazepam is the best all-around benzo: good for anxiety, great for combining with any other drug, and has a nice medium-length effect. that's why it's apparently the no. 1 prescribed benzo.
however, for recreational use, there are several far funner benzos:
Temazepam [the most popular [hypnotic] after:
Flunitrazepam. the funnest. thusly, banned in most countries. almost feels like an opiate the 2 or 3 times i was lucky enough to have some from taiwan brought by a nutsy traveller to my homeland.
Eurodin cant remember it much [hehe, for obvious reasons], but it's like a very weak "rohypnol".
Bromazepam: kind of like a weak temazepam. Very fun as far as I recall.
nitrazepam and diazepam: they are very similar IMO. they are the best after the hypnotics i've tried. however, for anxiety they're not so hot, because the after-effect makes one annoyingly sluggish. Valium is fun during the high, but it gets annoying quick because of its high drowsiness profile.
Xanax hits you like a brick to the head, I hate it [I remember ambien being similar]. It's very addictive, it's the crack of benzos, but not as fun as other addictive drugs. Being addicted to benzos, which I've luckily avoided, would make me feel extremely stupid, since at least stims and opies are FUN [as hell]. benzos just make you into a wet puddle. whats the point? they're only good for combining with other drugs and for sleep or to counter strong anxiety. in fact, most of the time i'd prefer mild anxiety to the "hammer to the head" effect of a benzo. The main problem is the negatives outweight the positives. They relax you and potentiate booze and opiates, and help you come down from stimulants; but they fuck your memory to shit, which have led for me personally to make some of the biggest mistakes of my life, like becoming addicted to opiates during a months long valium binge. the amnesiac effect of benzos is in fact so strong that they are used in surgery to erase your memory of them hacking into your flesh WHILE they perform. Benzo abuse is a Hell that rivals opiate addiction, minus the intense euphoria. The benzo and ex-benzo junkies I've known are the jumpiest, nutsiest junkies besides crackheads. Thank god barbs are no longer around. Reading Burroughs books, it sounds like barbiturate addiction is worse, more dangerous and much less exciting than opiate addiction -- which is saying a lot, seeing as how opiate addiction is almost like the benchmark for the Hell of Drug addiction itself....
so, to summarise this rant. Benzos absolutely suck, so if you're prescribed them, eat them up fast enough that you don't develop a dependence, or sell the fuckers. end of story.
