switched from codeine to oxycocet

hi,

my doctor has been prescribing me tylenol #3's for a couple of years, usually 100 at a time and i get a refill every couple of months. i would take 60mg of codeine for my starting dose. i just switched over to percocet 5mg and i was wondering what the equivalent is to match the codeine? if i can max out on codiene 300mg in a 24 hour period, would taking the equivalent amount of the oxy be dangerous as i'm not used to this particular opiod? i do not take them every day, as i run out quickly so i'm not sure if i lose my tolerance within those 6 or 7 weeks between prescriptions. i don't want to 'overdo' it with the percocet. i'm not sure if it has a tendency to depress respiration as much as codiene etc. my doctor just warned me these were much different, dangerous and more addictive than codeine.

thank you.

I'm surprised you doctor gave you oxy from codeine. 100mg of codeine equals 10mg of oxy. Next time use the opioid convention chart please.

thank you for the info. i wasn't aware of a chart. i guess i need to navigate the site a bit more?

i had surgery a year ago and was on morphine for a long time, i started out with dilaudid but it made me feel angry and agitated, the morphine made me sick, the codeine started giving me welts on my arms, so this was something we decided to try.

is oxycodone none addictive at pescribed doses?

Oxycodone is always addictive even taken at perscibed doses. The high isn't really addictive at perscibed doses, but the pain killing affect is what can causs people to become addicted.

How in the world did your doctor switch you DOWN to crappy Codeine from Morphine? I would have been very stern and done everything possible to convince him to keep me on the morphine. However, I prefer Oxycodone. (the narcotic in percocet, percs are just oxycodone with acetaminophen added in them to attempt to avoid people from abusing them). Oxycodone is one of if not the most abused opiate pain medication in the united states and is my 2nd favorite opiate pain medication behind hydromorphone/Oxymorphone.

I assume you have a tolerance to morphine since you state you were on them for a long time. How long are we talking here? And what was your dosage and route of administration? Morphine has an awful absorption rate/bioavailability when taken orally so if you take a 30mg mophine pill (either IR or ER) you're only getting at maximum 10mg of that pill absorbed into your bloodstream and actually helping your pain. This is why when I had a solid morphine connection and was getting 30MG pills from a buddy who got a huge script each month, I would take them via rectal administration where the bioavailability is between 70-90%.

So, oxycodone/percocet is even stronger than morphine and has a much better oral bioavailability than morphine (I believe it's about 90% of the pill you're getting into your bloodstream). What this means is that you need to be careful not to overdose. I would advise starting out with 5-10MG and see how that makes you feel and if you're getting the desired feeling you were hoping for (Whether you're taking them just to relieve pain or to get buzzed/high).

One more thing, eventually if you do end up wanting to take over 4 or 5 pills at one time, please learn how to do a cold water extraction to avoid ingesting dangerously toxic amounts of acetaminophen. What this does is removes the acetaminophen and leaves you with only the oxycodone that was in the pill. This way, you can take as much oxycodone as you want (please learn your limits so you don't overdose) without worrying about liver toxicity/failure from the acetaminophen.

Oxycodone is a great drug that gets me really high when I take enough. Love it through and through and when taken properly and smartly you have nothing to worry about except getting a fantastic buzz.

half a pill kicked my pain right in the butt. powerful drug.

i was hospitalized in january 2014 with sepsis and a hole in my stomach with abcesses, it was very very painful and i lost most of my stomach, i also am not allowed to touch NSAIDS like ibuprofen because it literally eats my stomach lining. i was on a morphine drip after surgery for two days (2mg every 8 min) then for almost a month 2mg intravenously every 2 hours. i was given zofran with it. unfortunately when i got home with my prescription and started taking it orally i got very sick (my stomach is so messed up now and very sensitive). so that's why i ended up going down to codeine. i built up quite a tolerance to codeine, i would also purchase otc 8mg tabs from the pharmacy and extract the codeine from those off and on. then i started getting hives i guess, doctor told me to try benydryl with it but i saw him today and said i didn't like taking an extra drug with my pain killer. a pharmacist suggested the percocet, so i suggested that to my doctor and he gave me a scrip for 90. i've been seeing him for 18 years so he's pretty familiar with me and knows my history with any sort of drug. i live in canada in a province that is very strict and keeps track of all your meds through your insurance card, so doctors can check to see if you are doc shopping, and i don't even try as i don't want to lose the flexibility to get painkillers easily.

i took two (10mg) a few hours after my initial dose and i was very relaxed and buzzing quite nicely. pain was gone. then i started getting sick and had to vomit to get rid of the yucky feeling in my gut. i don't suppose i'll be taking higher amounts of this drug because of that. i will just keep my dosage low and enjoy the tremendous pain killing benefits and the nice feeling. it's not as bad as the morphine stomach wise, as the morphine gave me really horrible pain like my insides were swollen. i couldn't eat with the pills either at the time because i was on a tube feed, but i wouldn't go back to the morphine.

this is the strongest opiod i've probably ever had, except for a drug i took in the 90's call talwin (pentazocine?) i had hand surgery and it hurt like a mother, that stuff was insane. i couldn't function on it. my doctor told me they don't make it anymore.

Since you have stomach issues, I would try rectal administration/plugging. I know initially you could be turned off by this, but this method is actually used relatively often in those with stomach issues or other issues that could prevent them from taking medications orally. The absorption rate is better this way and it hits you quicker and stronger. I use this method almost daily (but that's to get high) as it's much more efficient than taking pain medication orally (most of them anyway).

it's all right to plug if it has tylenol it it?

today i divided the pills in half and staggered them, it wasnt too bad for my stomach. i'd rather have better absorption though so i don't use them as fast.

Those charts don't translate to real world effects. Taking 10 T3's is not going to feel like a whole 40mg of oxy. No chance.

Those charts are meant to be a point of reference for therapeutic equivalence. Analgesia value =/= recreational value.

Oxy is the most addictive opiate I've come across. The urge to re-dose is strong, as the effects wear off quickly and are very euphoric. Be safe.

It's okay to plug with the tylenol in them as long as you are not taking over the daily max of tylenol. However, it will help absorption if you do a cold water extraction on the pills before plugging them. I used to plug hydrocodone/oxycodone all the time and the absorption was a tad better if I performed a cold water extraction first. You can find instructions on how to do a CWE on the forum by using the search tool. It's a very simple procedure.

I third the plugging. I'm very surprised your doctor put you on Percocet if you have stomach issues as the APAP in them can irritate the stomach lining and cause issues, especially at high doses .Definitely do a CWE whether you're just taking them orally OR using them rectally. Measure the amount of water you use so you can keep track of your dosages.

hi, just wanted to update.

i went through the percocets really fast, i was doing 40mg every 4 hours until i ran out. so i switched back to codeine. i would have ended up having an accident or something if i had kept on with the percs.

i have a question about cold water extraction, which i have done with my 8mg tylenol 1s, how much codeine will i lose doing this? what is the percentage retained during CWE?
