Why do opiates/opioids make it difficult to swallow? for me some do and some don't. Oxy makes it REALLY hard for me to swallow anything solid. Water is usually ok although sometimes I even have problems with that too. Kratom, even at high doses or FST, doesn't give me this problem. Neither do poppies. So far, it's just oxy...Tramadol doesn't do that to me and I wasn't prescribed hydrocodone a long time and never used tons at a time so I can't really tell if I would have ever run into this problem. But I have peeing problems on all of them, and on constipation on the ones that are just a pill, not the ones that I grind to a fine powder and put into capsules..plenty of, ahem, FIBER in those...so I think that helps! ;)

Just wondering why this is???:?

It's a type of drug induced dysphagia...the oesophagus and related muscles are so relaxed it causes issues like what you're describing. It's harmless and common. I experience this frequently and the key is to not psych yourself out. But, as a matter of HR, severe difficult with swallowing (unlike what you're describing) are likely the result of OD'ing, but other symptoms at that point would clue you in anyway.

I checked that out and WOW it was really hard to read but I think I got the gist ;) THANKS! That explains it...

I get both the swallowing and difficult urinating issues. Both are really annoying, but only seem to appear when I take higher than normal doses. Although they are a distant 2nd and 3rd to the occasional opiate induced headache. Those are a bitch!

I have never had this issue, my mother...we have to watch her carefully after surgeries, only ice chips until we know she won't choke on water. Everyone is just different, I suppose. Opiates relax your muscles, the throat/esophagus is just another muscle.
