Abstract

Drug addiction and abuse have been extremely serious problems in our society. The effect of different environmental conditions on the susceptibility of human to drug addiction and abuse is still not fully understood. It was recently reported that enriched environment can trigger long-term modification in neural functions and might prevent the occurrence of pathogenic behaviors. Here we investigated the effects of enriched environment on morphine-induced reward in mice. We found that the enriched environment attenuated the acute morphine (10 mg/kg)-induced hyperlocomotion and repeated morphine (10 mg/kg)-induced behavioral sensitization. Moreover, the environmental condition blocked the conditioned place preference (CPP) of the mice induced by morphine (5 mg/kg). Associated with behavioral alterations, the expression of FosB-like proteins in the nucleus accumbens of the brain was down-regulated in the mice housed in the enriched environmental condition, but not in the standard environment. Taken together, these results indicate that enriched environmental condition leads to decrease in sensitivity of the mice to morphine-induced reward.

That abstract looks very interesting! I'm going to give the full article a read later.
 
Just read through it for the first time, a couple of thoughts -

The methodology for the study was good and the results very interesting. The FosB results illustrated in fig. 4 were, in my opinion, the most biologically profound.

I wonder if statistics for socioeconomic status (particularly as a child) and opioid addiction mirror the results of this study? (Cane might have some insight on this)

Two immediate directions I'd want to go after this study - one would be to replicate it with a larger number of mice. Next, I'd like to examine if and how the observed effects shift if mice are transferred to more or less enriched environments.
 
Yes, there are a lot of related studies that would be wonderful to branch off of this. I am amazed that there has been a study done as well as this has, and yet the implications of this do not get discussed. This is a very poignant message that this study conveys about opiate addiction, IMO.

Indeed it is, thank you for posting this.

Does this mean people who grew up in and currently live in ideal conditions can't become addicts? No, it doesn't. But they are certainly less likely. Likewise people who haven't ever lived in ideal conditions could possibly use heroin and not get addicted.

Its definitely a very interesting study, I would like to see what people who work at rehabs that teach the disease model have to say about this.
