Surgury With No Pain Meds To Go Home With

Just had the same thing happen last week. Emergency appendectomy here. INTENSE pain. They gave me IV morphine at first then IV hydormorphone before the surgury and then every two hours the next morning.

When it was time to go home the doctor told me just to take naproxin. I told him I wasn't comfortable going home without pain medication because as the hydormorphone would wear off, I still had a lot of pain. He said he didn't have a triplicate prescription pad. I said I would wait.

After two hours of waiting I finally got him to write 30 5mg oxycodone. And he had to embarrass me in front of the staff saying "this guy thinks I'm a pharmacy. What do you want me to write?"

Unbelievable what all this has come to!

Appendectomy = meds

Broken bone and they know you are not dependent on opiates = meds

If you have a toenail removed = No meds

Dependent = no meds.

I hope you guys see the difference between Major (appendectomy)and Minor (toe nail removal) surgery.

Tylenol 3's are 30mg Codeine & 300mg APAP
Tylenol 4's are 60mg Codeine & 300mg APAP

The pills with 8mg Codeine 15mg caffeine and 325mg apap are commonly known as "222's"

My bad! you're for sure right.

But yeah, "222s" are OTC in Canada. Picked em up several times before discovering that either a) the caffeine ruins it or b) I'm missing the enzyme needed to get anything from codeine. Did the maximum dose (400mg, I believe) with only a mild tolerance and felt stone cold sober, aside the jittery way-too-much-caffeine feeling.

And yeah when I was younger (I think I was 14 or 15) I fractured my leg in 2 places and broke it in a third. The third was where it splits sideways, kinda like: ----/ /----. Took 4 months to heal completely, in a cast that went from my toes to my hipbone.

They sent me home without meds and told my mom to give me tylenol if I felt pain. I was up all night screaming x_x.

Unbelievable is putting it lightly. I would have told him exactly where to put his little smartass comment (after receiving the script of course).

A nurse can do that. It's a special tool they use that requires little to no skill.
He'll check the healing, then tell a nurse to take them out if he doesn't do it himself.

yeah, I could do it myself actually.

I just don't want to burn any bridges. We're so at the mercy of the insurance companies that I'm scared to say anything to anyone. Luckily I got what I needed and hopefully I won't have any more surgeries any time soon!

pain meds for a removed toe nail? i dont think so...

i've been in the ER for some pretty serious wrecks where i was taken by ambulance, and i was in real bad pain, and i still didn't get pain meds.

FWIW man, I had the same operation and didn't have any post-op pain. Just my experience

You had broken bones and all they gave you was Ultram? One shot of Fentanyl? That is insane to be inpatient at a hospital for something like that and that is all they gave you? Geez even when I was on Methadone and had to have a minor surgery they gave me Dilaudid IV afterwards and Oxy to go home with, and they knew I was on methadone. Wow you poor thing! I hope things are better now!

Yah, it sucks, but what can ya do? I have zero history of pain medication abuse (I've had pain meds twice in my life before this - once for a broken arm, and another for having wisdom teeth removed). I guess one problem is that in Costa Rica, there's nothing available in between codeine and morphine.

They weren't even going to give me the shot of fentanyl until I was in bed crying for about an hour, so they called the surgeon and he authorized it. I later found out that the nurses thought I was 'demanding', lol. Yah, I'd say so, that hurttttttttttt.

There is no dilaudid, oxy, vicodin, etc. The surgeon sent me home telling me to just pickup tramadol at the pharmacy. I spoke to a friend that is a doctor, and he recommended I tramadol, codeine, and celebra at the same time, and that helped a lot, it made the pain just a minor annoyance.

I guess that is one of the disadvantages of living in Costa Rica. Pain medications stronger than codeine are heavily frowned upon, although I have no idea why. I was told that the potential for abuse is just too high, which is the reason why they are not available here. *shrug*

My dad just had Hernia surgery. He had 3 hernias in his groin area. He's almost 70 clean cut, wealthy. He got 20 vic 5/500's Until I mentioned what if he vomits because those tend to make people sick because of the APAP how about some promethazine or the 5/325 or 10/325 hydrocodone they looked at me like I was fucking nuts. He walked out with 40 Perc 10s. Fuck that shit, my dad is no junkie, has never smoked a cigarette in his life. He is entitled to proper pain management.

^He is, it's just some bullshit they're telling people to get out of scripting pain meds. Not properly managing pain is medically unethical.

I think the OP got that line of bullshit because he lives in Kentucky and the dr's there are scared to death to script anything for anyone because of the huge pill problem there.
