Hello,

I recently moved to the central California coast and want to learn surfing. People have told me that it is necessary to start on a long board, is this true?

A background of my athletic history: I've always been fairly active. I can swim in the ocean easily and have skied, snowboarded and rock climbed, extensively.

Maybe I should skip the long board and go right to the short board?? I don't know.

Also, what type of wet suit should I get?

How much will all of this run me?

Thanks!

Before you buy anything, go to someone teaching lessons. Use their equipment for a day before you start dropping cash on your gear. Get a feel for it and you'll figure out how to best spend your $200 (cheap) on your pre-owned board or $500-$5000 for a new board. Your wetsuit will run around $100, more or less. Your previous athletic experience is good, but you can't skip steps easily to learn how to go from 0 knowledge/experience..
