Supplements for Xanax WD? Help...

be prepared for hell on earth bud
Everyone else seems to be saying that either way, if I taper or stop I'll be fine since its only been 2 weeks and mostly 1-3 mg a day (4 mg once). You seem to be the only one disagreeing and saying "hell on earth" and "expect a shitty few weeks". Is it really as bad as you make it sound? I've been in kind of similar situations and been fine but I was under the understanding that it was more about how long you have been taking them rather than how much (and 2-4 mg isn't THAT much) that affects if and how bad w/d will be. Any comments or advice? Just trying not to freak out. I took some adderall this morning to get some school stuff and plan on 2 mg tonight before bed then 1 or 2 mg tomorrow and my last 1 mg on friday and give it the weekend to see how I feel. Do w/d really take a few days to be noticeable? Thanks again for reading my long posts.

I think I may be misunderstanding something. Since Xanax is a short acting benzo, I would experience w/d within a day or two if its gonna happen right? It's the longer acting i.e. Valium that take longer to get out of your system and can lead to confusion about withdrawals. Is that right?

Great. I think at this level of dosage and length it would be all in my head anyways. Shit can get scary though when you read stories about having seizures and hitting their heads so i go through periods of panic mode. I have a feeling all will be good by the weekend. Thanks for the support BL and I'll update if anything goes haywire.

P.S. Only 11 days till 4/20. Get your smoking lungs ready.

Honestly, you've only been doing it for 2 weeks so it's unlikely you'll experience withdrawal at all, and it will be extremely minor if you do. A slow taper is only going to keep you on the drug longer and probably make you MORE likely to have withdrawal symptoms. Just go cold turkey.

Okay thanks for the advice. I just took 2 mg yesterday and 1 mg this afternoon (and probably one mg tonight). Tomorrow the plan is 1 mg after I get off work and then trying cold turkey for the weekend. I have always been able to keep benzos around without going overboard no problem because I do use them occasionally to come down from trips/adderall(which is why 2 mg yest). I don't want to do a slow taper though because I agree that I would be more likely to have w/d symptoms. I only took 4 mg one day and I didn't want to just stop the next day which is why I'm doing the 3 or 4 day reduce dosage before cold turkeying.

Lemme just ask one more question. For xanax (no other benzos have been taken in 2 months +), on what day would I be most likely to feel withdrawal symptoms? I felt really weird about 24 hours after taking the 2nd bar two days ago but it could have been because of the pot I was smoking (fantastic blueberry). And also I will still have about 8-10 bars stashed after I cold turkey for exam time to come down off the addy so is the concensus that I can cold turkey within the next two days (would be under 3 weeks use then) and then if I feel really shitty a few days after just take 1/3 of a bar or something??? (My bars split into three pieces so it would be hard to take .5 mg). Once again thanks. Yall are a tremendous asset.

Okay I won't waste your time with rehashing my story (I posted it in a thread called Quick Xanax Question about a week ago). Long story short, an abundance of xanax came around and have been available like never before. I've been taking them for about 3 or 3 and a half weeks. Typically I took 1 mg to 1.5 mg a day (always at night after work - never actually during the day to function) and there was one day were I took 4 mg but that was about a week and a half ago. The last dose I took was last night around 6:30 and was 1 mg to come down off of adderall.

The problem is that I like to use Xanax to come down off of acid and stims and I can keep them around no problem, but I just got into the routine of taking a little bit every day. For the last week it has been no more than 1 mg a day and I am ready to stop. I am not planning on taking any tonight, but I still have 10 bars left (2 mg pills) that I will stash for exam week. I would like to be off for about a week because I know I will need to use them to crash from adderall during exams.

A Couple questions: I should be safe from seizures if I don't take any tonight and continue cold turkey, correct?

1 mg a day for less than a month isn't a lot (I don't think) so should the WD be too bad?

And is there anything in terms of supplements I can get to help me through this? I am thinking Melatonin and Tylenol PM (If necessary) to sleep and some multivitamins. I have heard drinking helps but I'm not a big drinker but I can have a beer or two a night if I need to. I do smoke a lot of bud though and have some fire right now so I will have that to help.

I don't find myself ever wanting to take it during the day or even really at night. I've just had it and eh, you know how it goes. I have been on 2 mgs a day for a week or two before and stopped with no noticeable problems. So I guess if anyone could just help answer these questions and lend any advice I would really appreciate it. Hell its been almost 24 hours since last dose. About how many days does it take to know you are safe from WD?

It's gonna be a good feeling to be off of these and I'm willing to do whatever I need to to make any WD comfortable. I have to go to work and school though so I need to make it as accomidating as I can. Thanks again guys (and gals) of BL.

1mg of alprazolam per day for less than a month isn't that bad. You should be okay in the long run, but the withdrawal might not be 100% painless since xanax is short acting. We can't tell you for sure if you'll be safe from seizures. Everyone reacts differently. I'd say that if you're not prone to seizures, then you most likely aren't going to get one. It'd be ideal if you could taper down to .5mg per day and then .25mg/day before finally quitting.

As for supplements, you mainly just want to take drugs that will help you with anxiety and help you sleep. Anti-histamines are an alright option (diphenhydramine and or doxylamine). You should also look into kava kava. Although kava actually works on your benzodiazepine GABA receptors so it has the potential to give you temporary relief from benzo withdrawal but extend the withdrawal overall. I don't know, try it and see how it works. It's legal, search for it on google. We can't help you with sources.

Thanks! I though about tapering down but thats what I've been trying to do for the last week but its hard to dose .5 and .25 mg when you only have 2 mg pills that break into three pieces. I just feel that I would only be extending the inevitable by doing that. I was looking more for stuff I could get OTC tonight at a CVS or grocery store because I just want to get off this as soon as I can.

I've never had a seizure before in my life so I hope I don't get one! I guess if I really do feel terrible I could take a little bit of Xanax since I will have some around but what I'm looking for is someone who's been in the same situation and can give me an idea about the safest way to do it. I know everyone is different and I am not worried about the actual act of not taking any more, just that I might be putting myself in medical danger by doing so. I don't have access to anything longer acting like Valium and really don't want to prolong this by taking more Xanax but if the ideal would be to taper down then I guess I can give it a shot. Here's the situation. I have ten 2 mg pills left and have been on around 1 mg to 1.5 mg at night for about 3 weeks. Safe to cold turkey? Will tylenol pm and some bud knock out most of the WD? I just have never had WD from anything before (even after 1 or 2 week xanax binges) so I'm in uncharted waters. I have a feeling that if I stop thinking about it and go about my day, I will be fine but just looking for some words of advice. Thanks again.

I think you're stressing a little bit too much since you've only used for a month. I've walked away from using benzos after 3-4 months at a time with absolutely no physical withdrawal symptoms, although I was using valium, but that's beside the point. I suppose you should just stop taking xanax and wait a day just to see how you feel. Tapering is ideal, but you don't always HAVE to do it. I know what you mean about just wanting to quit when you're ready. Maybe you should just do a quick 2 day taper. Take .5mg one day, .25mg the second, and go cold turkey the 3rd. As I've said, I really don't think it will be too bad. I've never made it through full blown benzo withdrawal (still using), but I've only had problems after using for several months at a time.

I am stressing too much. That's my nature and flaw but thats why BL is such a great resource.

I actually tried to do a taper after I posted the thread about Xanax last week and it just didn't work - as stupid as it sounds I just couldn't break the damn pill into the right dosages. It would always end up in have or a third well needless to say it was a pain.

It's been almost 24 hours since I last took 1 mg and I have a headache and backache but I think its just because I had to rush into work and didn't get a chance to grab lunch. Here is what I was thinking - I'm going to the grocery store tonight and gonna stock up on gatorade, soup, and munchies and get some Tylenol PM and just go with it. I figure I can take one of the bars I have left and break it into thirds (for some reason these are divided into three parts) and take 1/3 if it gets bad over the next few days. I think I can make it if I just smoke a lot after work. Good to know I'm not in any physical danger though.

I guess its better that I want to stop taking em even though I have some bars left so its not like I ran out and am fiending. Thanks for the informative responses Sonic, I appreciate it a lot. I will keep yall updated and see how it goes. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Kava kava is great for xanax withdrawals and potentiation as well... Check out Valerian root, passion flower and kava kava. All of them are legal and make for a nice calm, warm feeling even when not withdrawaling :) . It's best to mix them together for a great synergy. I'm sure your local health food store will have all of those items.

Hmmm I had never really thought about kava kava before but I just checked a local vitamin store's website and they carry it in stock and there is one close by that I could go to after work today and get some. It looks like what they sell is Kava Kava Extract 250 mg pills. Is this what you mean? I will do a search to see what I can find on BL about kava kava but if I were to go to the place and get some tonight and start taking it, is it really that helpful at avoiding benzo withdrawals or will I only be putting off the inevitable and go through WD when I stop taking the kava kava. I am really interested in this now so anything yall can throw at me would be awesome. This is actually exactly what I was looking for (a supplement to help me avoid WD and sleep/feel better). I'm just ready to take a break from the Xanax. Anyone have any experience with Valerian Root, Passion Flower, or Kava Kava?

Yeah it took me a minute to figure out how my new thread had 35 replies already. I was like damn these people respond fast haha.

I can post a link to the Kava Kava i was looking at: http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/store/en/browse/sku_detail.jsp?id=VS-2143

Mods: If links like this aren't allowed feel free to delete.

So if I take the Kava Kava tonight will it have a noticeable affect or does it just help with the GABA receptors? I have read that getting the supplement GABA is worthless because it is orally inactive and also that one shouldn't drink while taking Kava Kava. I am assuming this is because alcohol acts on same receptors and possible liver damage to boot? Anyone have suggestions as to dosage and frequency of Kava Kava given my stated use of benzos in the last few weeks. Do I need to taper off the Kava or will I be straight once the alpraz is out of my system? It feels a lot better even talking about taking a natural supplement than a pharmaceutical for some reason.

Anyone have any suggestions. I have searched around on BL and can't find any threads really about taking Kava to WD from benzo but it seems as if the concensus is that the extracts you get from the stores are no good for recreational value, but what I am wondering is will they still help since they have an affinity for the GABA receptors? I'm not looking for a high, just a supplement to make me feel better while I'm off the xans

I checked out the big Benzo site that is often linked - i think it is benzo.co.uk or something and it said that supplements really don't help and can make things worse. Can anyone comment because I am making a trip to the store in about 30 minutes. Thx!
