well, the tragic news has come in....

superman, aka christopher reeve as passed away....

dead at the age of 52....

:( :( :( :( :(

whilst the passing of mr reeve himself is a great tragedy, he was a great actor in his time, and a fantastic spokesperson for spinal cord research...

but the most important point of this thread is that a hero has fallen...

for many of us growing up, superman was in our life in someway...

be it the superman undies, the superman lunchbox, or simply putting a sheet down the back of your shirt and pretending you could fly...

superman was the ideal superhero... he was strong, nearly invincible and he could fly.... but not only that, he did it all from a mundane, boring everyday life...

showing us that it is possible for the ordinary man to infact, be extraordinary.... COTB - permission to use your quote here

so, we do bid goodbye to christopher reeve, a great man dealt some of life's crulest blows...

but most of all, a goodbye to childhood memories of super human powers, of being able to rescue people, to the power to right a wrong, but most of all, goodbye to a fantasy world where everything was right and we were innocent...............

:( :( :( :( :(

I'm sure this is in bad taste but my dad suggested the doctors fucked up and had him on an IV kryptonite drip which was the result of his downfall.

On the upside we still have the other Superman still - Dean Cain :\

Beech out

i neva gave a shit about superman, maybe i was an abnormal child but superheros always seemed stupid 2 me... but i very much admire c.reeve's work to promote stem cell research, very important i think

*sigh*

The assholes on this forum notwithstanding......thanks for posting that muzby.

I know he wasn't the only Superman, but he was Superman for me when me and my niece and my eldest nephew used to make my sister play the first Superman movie for us over and over again every weekend while I was in primary school....and while I take the point that he wasn't some kind of selfless angel because he only started helping people with paralysis after it afflicted himself; so fucking what? How many people out there who have dissed him because of it contribute to causes that don't affect themselves directly? I'm pretty sure you'll find there aren't a LOT of people in the world who go out of their way to help causes that they don't have a personal interest in.....

RIP Christopher Reeve, thanks for bringing comics to the screen for me...

aw :(

anyway, back on topic: it *is* a shame that he's gone, especially so young. i actually didn't expect this at all...he's only fifty-two.

^^^Sorry dude, I wrote that while you were writing yours....that link was funny in a black comedy way (and did make some interesting points in its own way)...I think I just had an instinct drunk reaction....hard to believe I'd be drunk on a Monday night, I know.... ;)

I agree with maddox. Still, a shame to those of you who carried that connection with him. Sounds like he was just seeing the start of his long road to recovery when another part of his body failed :\

For me and alot of my friends Mr Reeves represented hope. One of our mates broke his neck playing rugby identical to the superman (fuck, can't believe that was over 10 years ago!) Same fucking chair, same fucking ventilator. Every time they met I knew they expired each other with the belief that one day they would both walk. Hang in there big guy, always thinking of you.

usually I think the tshirthell guys are often funny, but that's fucking sad.....

I can't believe how many people are writing him off, saying he is an arsehole and stuff, considering the work he did...

i must say, i do disagree with the maddox site...

so what if christopher reeve only started paying attention to crippled charities once he became one.... hell, most of us only pay attention to what is around us..

there are a million different charities for a million different causes....

there are millions of different diseases out there, all looking for a cure.... if we all payed attention to all of them, we would have no time for anything else...

me? well, i donate for heart research... why? because my grandfather died of heart failure.. my dad has suffered from heart troubles since he was 30, and had heart surgery last year... so i certainly know what will take my life.... so naturally i will donate...

sorry if i dont pay any attention or donate any money or try raise awareness for breast cancer.... but chances are, i wont get it.. so its not top of mind, even though it affects so many people in this world... i'm sure delta goodrem did not give 2 shits about the australian hodgins lymphoma foundation 2 years ago....

and if we listen to this maddox site, maybe we should all start donating to alzheimers australia... hell, we will all meet there one day (if the doctors are right...)

but this thread wasnt started to debate wether or not christopher reeve was a good man... this thread was a tribute to the loss of childhood dreams.....

I've already said what I feel about that self-righteous dickhead maddox in the other superman threads and it seems there's a lot of Bluelighters that share his opinions.

it's sad to know , but there's no point trying to argue otherwise.

I think some peoples main objection to the work he did was that he was doing it for personal gain - sure, it was good that he created trust funds and funded research into the fields, but only after his way of life was significiantly effected did he actually "give a damn" about people in similar situation to him. I'm fairly sure that if he'd funded the reasearch before he'd had that accident, then it would be a different story altogeather. I didn't have a strong connection to him, my superman will always be Dean Cain :\ 8(

Christopher Reeve will always be Superman to me. Dean Caine was not "average" enough as Clark Kent, to relate to that part of us that wanted to break free and be extraordinary.

Heres to believing you can fly because you tuck a towel into your shirt, wear your undies on the outside and and hold your arms with one outstretched and one cocked slightly.
