YOUNG people holidaying in Ibiza are at the mercy of drugs gangs, senior officials have warned, after the arrest of two women for cocaine smuggling.

Criminals on the island are believed to have recruited Melissa Reid and Michaella Connolly, who had been spending the summer there, to smuggle cocaine from Peru.

A senior Spanish police source said that the island's tourist industry depended on the drugs trade, and that the pair's arrest showed how drugs gangs recruit "mules" in Ibiza. More than 700,000 Britons a year visit the island.

"Most middle-class British parents sitting at home would not like to know what their children get up to here," he said. "There's a real fear among the authorities here that if the drugs scene were closed down the whole place would collapse."

Though the authorities want to play down the drugs problem, 109 Britons have been arrested this season, 35 for dealing or using illegal substances.

(I wasn't sure if I should include this in the thread with the story of Melissa and Michaella, but since this is aiming to be more general, I kept it separate.)

I posted a similar article in the other thread.

But I was wondering, how do you have access to that article, when it only lets me view the first two lines before telling me I have to sign up for a (paid) digital subscription?
