And it was just like that, that the summer had returned. As if the years before had been gently lifted away by the warm breeze now moving through my hair. I found myself with friends at my side and a girl of great wonder on my arm. How we would laugh as we sat at each traffic light. Like kings of the world in my little red car. Laugh as we shook our hands in the air and yelled "smoke this fool" to whoever the unfortunate driver alongside us would be. And it never mattered if we won, if we lost or if I flooded the engine and we stalled as the traffic behind us hooted and yelled. We laughed with our heads to the sky, laughed that the tears rolled down our cheeks and our stomach’s hurt with the joy of the moment.
How I looked into her eyes on those still evenings on the beach, I watched the reflection of the dying fire and the thundering waves in her eyes. The whole world was there, there in her eyes. And I swam so in those waves. Free, in and out of a million summers open-mouthed kisses.
The warmth begins to ebb now, ebb like the very seas on those hot summer nights. Summers time is ending, for now. So I will write these things down, and post them here for you, my friends. Wrap them in wax-dyed hand-woven cloth, bind them up in simple brown string and send them to you. May you slowly unravel this precious cargo's contents, and let it loose on your life. Live it every day, let the joy rain from the skies as the warmth tickles your skin and the salt bubbles between your toes. And when it becomes your turn, don't be sad that it is leaving. Instead pack each and every one of those memories back. Picking up each one in turn and smiling, as they pull back the memories from your mind. Like the moon pulling the tide on those still evenings. Pack them carefully in sheets of fresh rice paper, and send them back to me.
Just imagine the smile on my face when summer is returned to me, filled to the brim with love, from you.
